Halo, HANS device, modern seatbelts, modern flame retardant suits. And still it’s a miracle. Each of these components were born of other tragic accidents. Lets hope they learn from this one too.

Glad he's ok. He's even acknowledged that he was wrong to be so critical of halo years ago....it saved his life. We need to move to shield in next few years as cockpit is still exposed to parts.

2 major events gave birth to both the Halo in F1 and the Aeroscreen in Indycar, Jules Bianchi in 2014 and then Justin Wilson in 2015. Thankfully they reacted and introduced these devices, it has already saved multiple drivers from life changing injuries, and saved one's life tonight. Now the next step will be getting rid of these guillotine barriers. We were so close to witness a fatal crash in the 60s-70s style...

Had he been incapacitated at all, be it knocked out, broken leg anything, I think he dies in that car. There has to be some more attention paid to fires.
Again no expert, but some kind of canister in the fuel tank or near it, that will automatically pop and douse the fuel cell(s) in a bad crash sounds like something to look at to me. Could you imagine if he didn't get out of that car under his own impetus? Lucky guy. Glad he is alright.

@@jg2627 as a fact that is correct, but a little crass. Prof. Watkins pioneered on-site medical facilities. Whilst many many drivers gave their lives for safety advancements that followed. Professor Eric Watkins OBE FRCS pioneered the medical procedures and facilities available at FIA sanctioned circuits today.
I’ll leave you with this passage from his Wikipedia page.
“At the 1978 Italian Grand Prix, Ronnie Peterson crashed heavily on the first lap, with the car catching fire. Fellow drivers Clay Regazzoni, Patrick Depailler and James Hunt pulled him from the wreckage but by the time Watkins arrived at the scene, Italian police had formed a human wall to prevent people from entering the area. Watkins was initially stopped from assisting with the treatment and there was a long delay of approximately 18 minutes before an ambulance arrived to take Peterson to hospital, where he died the following day. Following the race, Watkins demanded that Ecclestone provide better safety equipment, an anaesthetist, a medical car and a medical helicopter (Medevac). All were provided at the next race in the United States.
In addition, it was decided that the medical car containing Watkins would follow the racing cars for the first lap of the race to provide immediate help in the event of a first lap incident.[14] The organisers at Hockenheim had denied Watkins access to race control and Ecclestone threatened to stand in front of the grid and order the drivers out of their cars.”
Thank you Professor Watkins, your diligence and never ending pursuit of driver safety ensured another driver will go home to their family.

Clearly a time to celebrate a successful outcome from years of relentless safety development in motorsport. A 137mph / 53G impact with massive explosion/fire. The crumple zone built into the car's structure (and arguably the barrier) allowed Romain to remain conscious, the survival cell and Hans device protected him from physical injury which allowed him to extricate himself. His fireproof apparel together with the fire marshal dowsing the flames (not forgetting the doctor directing him where to point the extinguisher) gave Romain time to get out. An inspiration to us all.

@NobleGuy i saw that as well but i think the SAFER barrier punctures have not resulted in these kinds of accidents, as the gaps are welded shut. This raw armco have those unprotected gaps which is part of the issue in the first place

    • @AMR_Krissy
      @AMR_Krissy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@NobleGuy yeah theyre definitely stronger. Intead of just one layer of bent steel the SAFER barriers are like 3 or 4 layers of box-steel and i believe theyre welded at the joints. No gaps between the tiers, each tier is basically the same stuff they make a car frame out of, with each strut/support not really bolted into the ground but rather positioned against the foam blocks. Its really quite fascinating. But yea its VERY expensive. Not to say that Bahrain couldnt install them if they really wanted to. And yeah no doubt its worth every penny. I used to watch NASCAR for almost 15 years growing up and I can tell you that the safer barrier has saved dozens of lives in that sport alone. Between the HANS, the SAFER barrier, survival cells and now the Halo, i think the four are among the greatest safety advancements in motorsports history, and I am forever grateful that some brilliant people have come up with them

Probably need to review use of armco barriers at every track. They're clearly not up to the job when cars crash into them hard. Maybe suitable for the inside of corners and that's it. You get a car going sideways on a straightaway into the wall, it needs to be a solid barrier that will hold the car on the track side. Even a thin tire barrier with a conveyor belt in front of the armco would have probably done the job.

Don’t forget the vital effect of the HANS device that prevented Grosjean suffering deceleration neck trauma: at the very least keeping him conscious and able to rescue himself, and not killing him, as happened with Roland Ratzenberger.
Irrespective of the Halo’s effect, had Grosjean been rendered unconscious, slumped in the cockpit, he would have been waiting for the flames to have been put out sufficiently first, so that the rescue team could do their work, when they arrived.
The fire marshal behind the barrier had an extinguisher all but useless, and it wasn’t until the marshal had crossed the track before the flames were pushed back off Grosjean and the Doctor - surely they was another fire marshal closer?
With the car still on fire, two extinguishers had been used-up already, and were laying empty on the floor, before the fire tender arrived, and during that delay, Grosjean would have been helplessly slumped in all the flames, heat and toxic vapours waiting for his rescue.
It needs to be asked why didn’t the cockpit extinguisher go off, and doesn’t F1 need a third chase vehicle at the start - as in Silverstone Sid/Donington’s fire tender?
