- In our era of constant gratification, instant satisfaction of
our smallest desires, and easy access to every possible comfort and pleasure, living on bare necessities is an experience that is utterly foreign to most of us. Yet only 80-90 years ago, most of the world struggled through years of desperation for basic things, the daily stress of searching for gainfulemployment, and the hopelessness and sorrow of barely scraping by to provide food and shelter for yourself and your family. This period is called the Great Depression, and was the largest economic disaster in modern history. Many of the structures, institutions, and ways of living that are enjoyed by most westerners today can trace their origin back to that time. From public assistance to government welfare, to social security, to heavy government regulations and rules for businesses and marketing; as well as the widespread use of media by governments to spread propaganda, the Great Depression introduced these things to modern society. Further, this period in the 1930s laid the foundation for the conditions and players that engaged in the Second World War, beginning in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland.
Besides the historical significance of the Depression, this
time period teaches us that those with faith in Jesus can abound and thrive with little to no earthly possessions, and that the Lord is always at work, even through the most trying times. Such examples of faith through financial and material adversity shows the importance of laying up treasure in heaven, and not on earth. For the treasures and pleasures of this earth can be snatched away in an instant.
So join Chris and Casey as they discuss the causes, characteristics, characters, and outcomes of the Great Depression, focusing on the U.S., but also evaluating its impact on central Europe and the rest of the world. You’ll learn about Hoover and Roosevelt’s government policies during this time, how they failed to alleviate the Depression, and how people coped with the tough times of having barely anything. You’ll also learn how the Lord’s people were at work then, and how the Lord’s hand raised up the Fascist powers in Europe, which instigated the beginning of the next world war of history. If you’re interested in economics and finances, then you won’t want to miss this episode. You’ll also be encouraged to put your hope in the Lord Jesus, and not in any society, institution, or government organization.
