I would add that music is a form of language. In fact it predates spoken languages.
It also differs from most spoken languages in that Instead of communicating thoughts and ideas - it communicates emotion - the very things that are hard to put into words. Perhaps this is why music with lyrics can be so powerful - the combination of words and melody gives us our maximum expressiveness.
    Just a thought.

      Cannot be the right answer.
      .
Language consists of sounds _that represent something else_ than the sound itself.
      .
In music, beginning with Vivaldi's four seasons, you have a piece that stands for the four seasons. Beethoven, in his famous fifth symphony, expresses the battle between good and evil, by making the tatatataaaaa, in minor, standing for the evil, and he ends it in major, so that evil is conquered by good.
      .
Such music is called _programmatic music._
      .
Almost all of Bach's music _is not of that nature._ The same is true about the music of Haydn and Mozart and their contemporaries. It is _pure music._ The music itself _is_ the message. It was Brahms in particular, who protested against program music, and wanted to make compositions that could stand on their own; not referring to anything.
      .
      This is called _pure music._
      .
Programmatic music is, at present, a very important component of movies.
      .
But House, for example, is pure music.
      .
So, in general, music _is not_ a form of language. You _can_ have music that is a language, and you _can_ have music, that is _not in any way_ a language.
      .
When, in the Romantic era, programmatic music became the hit, Bruckner first composed his music, and then, knowing that programmatic music was the thing, he concocted some story about knights and maidens represented by parts of his music. And when somebody asked him about a particular segment, he answered: 'Ich wuste gar night, was ich dabey gedacht have, als ich das schriebte.''. Or, 'I have no clue what I thought of, when I composed that part'.
      .
I myself compose _only_ pure music. I try to make music that affects the mind in such a way, that consciousness itself is strengthened. Therefore, I compose in such a way, that it _only_ stands for itself.

I agree with you. Nature can be beautiful and aesthetically valuable, but that does not make it art.

You didn't touch on the obvious "Dogs Barking" "Jingle Belles" song. Is it natures sounds or Fido looking for attention?

I don't think you lose any philosophical expressiveness by restricting the definition of music to be "human created." It's not to say that nature sounds aren't pleasant, they certainly are. They just aren't created for the same purpose. Some sounds may not be created for any purpose at all, but rather the result of a natural phenomenon. The fact is, nature would continue creating these sounds with or without humans.
An interesting question is whether a person can create music for no purpose at all, or to negate purpose. Is that still music?
