I have been playing violin for about 22 years. When I got to music school I improved tremendously, but at the same time I hit huge mental barriers and crippling self doubt. Sometimes I couldn't even practice because my thoughts and memories would always get in the way. I started depending heavily on THC, Caffeine and Nicotine to help me block out the thoughts that hindered me. Sometimes the thoughts got so bad that I came close to attempting suicide. The ego has to be the biggest barrier of all for a musician. I hope that once I overcome the ego, my practice can be more meditative. In fact, according to the teachings of Tolle, I need to overcome the Ego NOW, and not just put it off to do some later day. Thank you Mr. Tolle inspiring me to keep going, and to be present as I practice and perform.
The light in him shines and makes him look so wise and so ancient. He's so much like an enlightened zen master who has come out of his satori after a long long time.
I think its best not to take anything he says too literally. He uses words, as he often states as "pointers" to the truth, and the truth that he points to which is beyond words is in the realm of no thought, no content, no thing. It is the space in which everything occurs, again only words. That is why he is advising people not to use anything external as a crutch for presence. He is not saying it is bad, just not to rely on it as ultimately there will be a point where you will have to let it go
The rhythm of music can put you in the present moment. Same with dancing. Same with any activity. Positive lyrics can put you in a positive spirit or state of consciousness. All is One unity of life force... Presence.
I don't know I just feel a spiritual connection to music. It is present across all civilisations now and historically; it connects us all. I feel like there is something more to why music is so ingrained in our cultures.
My take on this is that music contains meaning which precedes or predates language. We understand or take in the meaning contained in music without having to translate it into words first. Before we could speak we knew the basic meanings of natural sounds - e.g. the anger or threat contained in the roar of a tiger and the beauty contained in birdsong. When we listen to music we bypass the language circuits in the thinking mind and this can be a great help in becoming present. Then we can turn the music off and remain present as Eckhart says. Love these videos - they are a great help.
Music was one of the only things that helped me feel love and peace for many years. Now I try to give what so many musicians gave to me, joy, if only temporary. It's much better to make music from happiness because it doesn't work to make it for happiness.
I couldn’t agree more! Singing is a way to connect to your highest self and remove thinking. Funny enough when you get to that state your vocal technique is on point as well... that’s how I teach and perform... thank you Eckhart! 🤗💙
Music is everything!!! Soothes the Soul & helps me Meditate & Sleep & I Enjoy songs from my Old Self too! Emotion of a Beautiful Love song is an Amazing feeling! Silence is Beautiful too!
Being a musician I find music to be a resource of deep emotion - sort of a state of being present yet coming from a faint, ancient place - so long forgotten.
So lovely and so true. I also find myself falling into the listening of music and for brief times in my life rising above the need for it. It's worst when I listen to so much of it that it gets stuck in my head and at that point becomes even as a crutch, making it far more difficult to return to silence, stillness and presence.
+PS couldn't agree more, music is a huge stimulus and too much of it creates a mind overload and mental echo that can be quite a 'crutch' as you nicely put it. A little music can be okay from time to time but every day and listening to hours and hours of it every day rather leaves us in a hypnotic state of consciousness.
Music makes the world a better place, practicing music makes you more present to yourself. Eventually your music makes the world a better place when people appreciate it.
Music can be good for so many things. Emotions, anger/stress relief, energy, uplifting, entertainment, healing, meditation. And when playing music: connecting with others on a deep level where words have no power or place.
I love listen to all kinds of music...it depends in which mood I am or in which mood I want to be... Music helps me to find out what I want for my life...books do the same. Love your books! Wish you a nice day...Kind regards from Germany
I was sitting with some friends watching an Eckhart video years ago. My grandson walked in complaining of a terrible headache. He was 11 years old. I said, "Just sit here for a few minutes." After I few minutes he got up and left the room. The next day I was watching another Eckhart video when my gandson walked in and said, "Oh, that's the man who got rid of my headache."
When I listen to music I like to set my attention on one of the instruments, single it out, and follow it without thought. Then catch another instrument and follow it...……...then listen to them all at once...beautiful practice.
It's difficult to imagine a less musical human being than E.T. looks here! And as for dance, I shall not even imagine it - I shall save it for some day when I really want to cheer myself up.
I find it so interesting when he talks about listening without having an object to listen to. Listen to nothing, to whatever is which is awareness. so basic that we over think it!
I think Master Eckhart can listen to any musc without beeing diturbed or carried away. As Plato once said, music of all music is a music of the UNIVERSE. I'm a pro musician and I agree with Master Tolle, that playing music can bring you to Presence, especially Meditatice Improvisations.
This is quite a challenging episode. To me art brings connection with reality. Art shares and conveys Gnosis, it is a way of celebrating. I sense art as something more than a portal. But I can agree that it is not something to become identified with.
I agree. Plus different teachers basically say the same thing. Tolle might resonate with me today but tomorrow it might be Louise Hay. And you are so right. Words fall short often and often it's not what someone is saying verbally but how we respond to the person energetically based on how we are creating them in our mind..uh..and stuff ...lol.:)
I love music. I really feel it resonates with me especially house/electro and consious hip hop. Can't imagine Eckart would listen to this type of music though
The cream is the fullness and the semi skimmed milk is the watered down version, its just a comparison to give you some sort of understanding as to the beauty and fullness of what he experiences within himself. You have to remember in what context he was referring to movies, there are movies that energise and reinforce the pain body like violent films. There are also films as well as music that take you into presence. He is just saying don't rely on them as ultimately presence comes from within.
A much more holistic approach I have found in meditation is not to be so concerned with 'stopping my mind'. I am interested in what my mind has to say and in caring for it. I used to be a big fan of Eckhart but found the approach rather tunnel-visioned in the end.
If you seek enlightenment you can access it through music and art. If you are enlightened - you can share it with others through making music and art. And rejoice in discovering the beauty of how forms interact.
Many many many thanks, MASTER Eckhart (Tolle)!!! ;-) Thanks to you, since november last year, i don't need any medicaments to be able to sleep (and I had to take them for about 20 (!!!) years)!!!
I can personally speak on this one. I've been into gangster rap for years, I've also listened to classical, country and techno for years all at different times. Bad music with negative lyrics feeds the ego and negativity. Like gangster rap will certainly influence anger. Sad country music will certainly influence sadness. You are putting something in your mind when you listen to music. Just like choosing vegetables over junk food, you would be wise to choose positive music over negative music.
Music has saved a lot of ppl like u and me too. But I feel it takes u to a certain state of consciousness as u go deeper and deeper into the music . But there is a certain space at which music can only do so much . It throws u back into where u where once u stop listening to or playing music . That's why eckhart says don't be dependent on anything to get into ur inner dimension
He puts it so well when he says what's inside is the cream and everything else is the skimmed milk. That's it exactly. Most people's daily practice is the opposite. Great question and answer
I just started back listening to music after about 4 years but yeah its mostly spiritual or love songs but i'm not that into it. I may listen it 1 song every few days x LOL he is so true listening to nothing! xxAnd i have lots of pictures of Eckhart in my phone x

love it how he never answers the question directly but does not fail to give a gem of information in the answer
Eckhart Tolle listens to dubstep and is the master of the silent flute.
I mine these videos for the sound of Eckert's laughter. I think it is so great to hear.

I'm so happy she asked this to be honest. As a musician who's looking to put work out I've often battled over the purpose of it.
Imagining Eckhart Tolle sitting with an Ipad, listening to music, and being present always brings a smile to my face.
Eckhart Tolle himself is a soothing music! 💓💓
when there is music enjoy it, when there is no music enjoy it. problem ends

Dancing, music and creative expression takes you to a wonderful presence. Most creative people just seem to enter a presence with very little effort.

For many people Music is a kind of pain killer .

Eckhart Tolle listens to pure silence.
I LOVE Calm radio!!!!!! Especially the Feng Shui, Zen, healing, and spa channels

Master Eckhart is a music-hybrid - he is the listener and the musician in one person. :-)
I can't fathom life without music, music is something I can't live without,
The harmony is what I seek out in music and in life.

Things he say might seem philosophical sometimes..but has deeper meaning.

The composer John Cage was a great reference for understanding how to attain presence through "musical moments" in daily life.

Great video Eckhart, very nice information, well done! ***** Have a great day, peace and love to you :) Love Pink.
As a musician, I have a problem that whenever I meditate, my mind is almost completely quiet except for some song that's stuck in my head. It's usually multiple songs. I've tried observing the thought, looking at it as if it were to pass by like a cloud in my head, but to no avail. What should I do?
DiagonalHorizon i had the same thing, just keep doing meditation ;) sometimes i realize that ive had just the same verse or chorus stuck in my mind for ages on repeat. its just about noticing it, and getting used to "putting the thought down".
DiagonalHorizon i am far from an expert but i would suggest just letting the song be there and not see it as a problem? Not sure if that is of use!

Pleroma Barbelo Not possible =)
then, when the video is done, keep listening to eckhart....stillness speaks =)
