- Posted by the International Al Jolson Society, www.jolson.org, this is an excerpt of the 14 Sep 1935 Shell Chateau starring Al Jolson with guest star Fannie Brice. Al Jolson begins the segment with a medley of three songs: "Whispering," "My Melancholy Baby," and "Poor Butterfly." Jolson then introduces Fannie Brice, the original Funny Girl, singing her signature piece, "My Man." The segment concludes with Al Jolson singing a song introduced in his movie, "Mammy," although this time in dialect, "Yes, We Have No Bananas." Photos of Jolson and Brice, real and composite, let you imagine being in the audience. The complete program, along with other Al Jolson radio shows, will be available on the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org, from its posting in September through the end of October.

Al Jolson was a Truest professional talented singer for over 50 years a collective 1/2 of the 20 Century. Al 🪦
God, I love that song by Fannie. She really makes you feel it.
Strange that she misses out the line "Oh my God, I love him so, he'll never know" which should be before "All my life is just despair" (compare other versions on TH-cam). Was "Oh my God" not acceptable on the radio at the time?
Other versions of this recording have the words "my man" blanked out in the chorus, unless she indeed sang "my God." We'll never know, unless the original record surfaces. It's possible that Fannie sang My God live for the east coast listeners, but the words were deleted for west coast playback two hours later. NBC did that when Sinead O'Connor tore up a picture of the pope live on SNL years ago. I saw it happen live, but it was edited out when the show aired later in the west.

Fanny Brice could really sing!!!! She was also "Baby Snooks' on the radio. Very funny.
Indeed she could. Fannie sang a variety of songs. There was a great article discussing Al Jolson and Fannie Brice in the Spring, 2024, issue of the Jolson Journal, sent to all full members of the International Al Jolson Society.

About 50 years ago I met a gentleman who said he was a cousin of Al Jolson, and it is certainly possible that it was true. His name was Joe Funis, and he was also Jewish as was Al of course.
Funis - usually a Sephardic name. But Jewish for sure. Maybe a cousin

When Al Jolson dies in 1950, Fanny Brice said;
“ I never liked the guy”
Yet, here we have Her appearing with Jolson on the Shell Chateau program in 1935. If you don’t like someone, why perform along with them.
