It’s not surprising. Weak people find god and MDE fans are generally weak/mentally ill. The "truth" is that you don’t know whether or not there is a god. There are no reasonable clues, only your emotions. Since you are mentally unstable, you become emotionally attached to the idea of a benevolent omnipotent being(if you are christian). But for a sane man, there is no need to bow to cultural schizophrenia. Bring me proof or understand what the problem if epistemology is.

Nick is actually really smart but this is just one of those things he clearly hasn't given any real thought too, I've known so many people like this in my life where they just kinda do things and go from one moment to the other without much thought put into it but when it comes to deep thinking and introspection they don't really have anything to offer. That being said it's good to bring it up with them every now and then because it may be the catalyst that actually gets them to start thinking about it.

I think Sam believes in God now. I’m not sure if he is a Christian or believes in Jesus, but he believes in God. I know he really dislikes atheists and their hubris of being so sure of themselves.

Mr. God only needs to be a story teller. We tell stories, we are made in His image. Mr. God made these stories for the same reason old ladies write and watch soaps, drama, stories. How our reality works is only important to make our lives better, explaining the thoughts of God is the wrong way to look at it. If you believe Mr. God has a personal connection with you that's fine every writer has a few favorite characters.
