Her skill, confidence, & the fact she doesn't have to brag; she knows she is a very capable fighter & just does it. She doesn't have an agenda, she just does her best to support her boyfriend(?) Roman & enjoys the chaotic ride.
“You can only engage the audience by making them ask the same question so many times” ie: we haven’t known Cinder’s motivation or backstory for 7 years now, so even if we get an amazing backstory in volume 8, we won’t care because we’ve waited for such a long time
@@jeramahia123 The world of one piece is gigantic so you never feel like those big questions are being stalled since there's so much left to explore. The world of Remnant has more or less been fully established so not having those answers feels more like its been stalled at this point
Why is Neo my best girl/Waifu ? That's simple : she's cute, she looks like an ice cream, her fighting style is amazing, THAT SMILE, she's more badass than most characters in the series, (CHIBI NEO!), SHE'S AMAZING ! oh and she doesn't talk too !
I think there are other factors to consider. The first one brought up by JelloApocalypse and HBomberGuy in their own RWBY critique videos. 1. She's less susceptible to bad writing decisions, because she's mute. Like she's not totally immune to them, but she doesn't get hit as hard as other characters when those happen. Lack of bad dialogue and awkward voice-acting obviously works in her benefit. 2. She's a villainess, but not a complete monster. She's capable of caring for other persons other than herself, and feel grief for another's person death. 3. Neo is loyal. A trait that makes her endearing to many of the fans, especially when combined with her cute appearance. 4. So far she has been portrayed more as a thief, trickster, getaway partner, and bodyguard, rather than an all out full-fledged murderer or assassin. There's even a meme that makes fun of how team RWBY has a higher onscreen killcount than her (or than most of the antagonists in the series, in general). 5. Disabled (apparently mute) petite woman that relies more on technique and brains, rather than on brute raw strength. She's constantly learning and adaptating to her situation. 6. She's the original Oum character that has kept most of her Oum vibes intact. The one that has changed the least since her original depiction back in Vol. 2. That could be a bad thing for some of the fans, but good for others, since she reminds everyone of the time RWBY was a comfier and more light-hearted action/comedy show.
You must be ridiculous or you do not watch this show at all. Every single critic who watches absolutely terrible anime depths somehow accuses this show of having worse dialogue? The criticism of hbomber is more like an adam fanboi or a qrow shipper.
How many anime got darker over time. You want bad writing look at bleach. The most stupid lines and the most ridiculous characters and the most ridiculous ret cons. Rwby is none of that. You never watched the actual show. All you do is watch hate videos. You are blind

So far, Neo remains one of the few credible villains in the show, given she got a relic which is one of the things Salem needed. Meanwhile, Cinder tries to get a maidens strength, which is only important for her own personal gain and nothing more and failed. I hope for her to be an enigma again, or confirm that she’s not fully on her side.
Your succinct, pointed script-writing is amazing. As far as it goes with Neo, I was frustrated with how she defaulted to following Cinder in Volume 7 as well, but I don't think the answer is "show only as much Neo as is necessary for her to be engaging in the plot while remaining an enigma herself." I want her to have a backstory eventually, but it could honestly be like 20 seconds long at absolute most, have no dialogue, and show her origins only as a means to lead into her acting on her own against Cinder (finally, whenever it does happen.) Not every character needs a backstory, and we've gotten most if not all of the information about Neo as we need, but I don't see the reason to keep Neo as much of an enigma as she is.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! And I feel like this is why people like Neo compared to Cinder. Every RWBY Season, fans have been frustrated with not knowing anything about Cinder's backstory, and at this point, I think a lot of people have lost interest. Obviously I still want to know, but I've talked to a lot of Cinder fans and at this point they're so "burnt out" from all this waiting that the excitement is gone. We constantly ask what they never give, but with Neo they always give us enough of a trickle. As you said too, Neo has this charm - I feel like Watts is very much the same way, whereas people have found some of the other villains annoying. Miles recently answered a question for a fan through one of those one-to-one videos, and said they haven't really landed on Neo's relationship with Torchwick. They know it was "love" which was at minimum platonic but haven't settled concretely. Miles said something like "at one point we were thinking, maybe Neo has a giant crush on him, but haven't come to a definite conclusion yet. At most, it was a positive relationship for her" (or something to that) So if they haven't settled on it, I doubt we'll get that big Neo backstory drop haha. Which like you said, I think is for the best. I want to know more about Neo before Torchwick maybe, if that's ever relevant, but I think what's important for Neo's motivations is that everything about her is motivated by things the audience has already seen, not her backstory (again, unlike Cinder). Cinder's actions are rooted in this mysterious backstory no one knows, but Neo's motivations are rooted in everything the audience saw - being with Roman and losing him. The song also gives enough context. I think Neo is going to continue surprising us and make us enjoy watching her kicking whoevers ass! I'm secretly rooting for them to kill Cinder in the Atlas arc and for them to draw a parallel between Neo and Salem. Ie, Cinder dies, Neo gets the Maiden powers and Salem pulls the "I had someone special to me once like you, and this cruel world took him away from me. What if I told you there was a way to bring him back (relics or just by calling the Gods)". Maybe that's just fanfiction, but I feel like that could really pull that off if they draw a compelling relationship between Salem losing Ozma and Neo losing Roman.
Actually, I think the reason Neo has become more interesting to Cinder is simple: She delivers what she promises. She hinted she was going to be a fun badass in her first appearence. She payed it off by spanking Yang. She promised she would come after Cinder. She delivered. We expect her to kick the shit out of JNR She does. Now Cinder USED to be that. She promised to be a dangerous antagonist that would shake up the then fairly cliched status quo, and she delivered a thousand fold. After that... We expect her to become a fearsome enemy again... she falls to being a petty lackey. (BTW, this is where I disagree on the "Neo is more interesting because she's motivated by things we've already seen" argument. Cinder in Volume 5 was ALSO motivated by an onscreen event, and she was actually LESS compelling than when she was motivated by an implied philosophy and backstory) We expect the rematch with her to have the same weight and Gravitas as her fight with Pyrrha... it's a letdown. We expect maybe she will Regain her old competence in Volume 7 and while she gets BETTER, it's not enough because we're still waiting for Volume 3 Cinder and everything since has felt like a watered down version of that. Speaking of, can I just speak for a second about how GOOD Rooster Teeth was in 2015-2016. RvB Season 13, then RWBY Volume 3, plus Camp Camp, the second season of Xray and Vav, Day 5 had it's amazing first season. They had their first movie (Sub par by their own standards, but still fine) and they were on both Netflix and El Ray...God we were blessed. I miss those days. By now, we don't have expectations, more a need. Cinder NEEDS to deliver on her post Season 3 promise and have an impact. A MAJOR impact. Not an.. I guess she did stuff too, but a Thanos, Kefka level "Holy SHIT, What just HAPPENED??" level impact. And she needs that more than a backstory because the impact she has on our heroes NOW means more than what happened to her ten years ago.
This is a pretty good video. It makes sense that in a show full of characters that seem cool at first but then become incredibly stupid once expanded upon (e.g. Adam, Hazel, etc.) that the character that just kinda has a simple shtick is so beloved.
I like Neo because she's a little bit of everything like the ice cream. People can see in her what they want to see which is why her not talking works so well. With a voice it would probably skew her personality in a certain direction. But as it is we're left to always guess what she's thinking. She's simple and complex. She's strong but feminine. Just a well designed character.
Honestly this video sums up about how I feel towards Neo And yeah, while I lean more into the corner of Torchwick being my favorite character I still absolutely adore Neo. Frankly I probably wouldn’t like Roman as much as I do without Neo, one without the other just doesn’t feel the same. Their dynamic is something that is important to me and the concrete knowledge that they cared for each other is enough and I can fill in the blanks on my own. Any extra tidbits information about them is interesting and appreciated, but definitely not needed in the grand scheme of things.
You made valid points. Her design is really appealing, her fighting style and we get enough of her to feel invested. That and now I'm not the biggest Yang fan so when I saw her basically wiping the floor with her recently well it gave her a boost on me liking her.
@@TMS-Oddbot The moment she lost her arm. You see something in vol.5 when Ruby and Weiss talk about Blake and goes full in vol6 and out of control after the lost fable. Yeah Pyrrha wasn't the only one who died on vol3. Yang did so aswell and I don't know who is this character calling herself Yang Xiao Long.
Oh boy, an opportunity to use my favorite Tolkien quote: “Part of the attraction of The L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist. To go there is to destroy the magic, unless new unattainable vistas are again revealed.”
I think along the lines of the mystery is she becomes malleable. Very similar to one of my favorite characters of all time Link. The watcher can give her almost any traits that they want. For me it was also the bad assness. Yang was the strongest of the group and neo walked through her like she was nothing. It then helped raven become cool. When they tried to explain raven it destroyed the awesomeness that she had gotten from the Neo rub. Antagonist some times just need to be strong and why doesn’t need to be explored (fall of adam also disappointing). Complex characters are nice but not all of them need to be complex. It’s part of the reason side characters can end up more beloved than main characters because you don’t see their flaws and they are always who you see them as
So is Emerald's semblance. In all regarde, if you take away the intellectual level, Emerald is basically Aizen when it comes to abilities. In saying so I'd say Emerald's semblance is is more, or should be more powerful than Neo's.
@@jacobholder8514 nice. Here they are; The Verandertier(s) (from tier verander, German for "changed beast"), are creatures (types of animal life to be exact) native to the world of Remnant, being direct and indirect descendants of the planet's original inhabitants (who occupied the planet before the Gods remade it as they please, thinking it was a blank slate). Like the Grimm (but having no relation to), they often pose a threat to to humanity. But UNLIKE the Grimm, which do so for the sake of it and live to do so, Verandertiers attack out of a sense of self preservation, defending territory and young, or otherwise "misbehaving", being neither good nor evil. their unique status as lifeforms not made by the Gods and the unstable, chaotic, and always changing ecosystem the planet used to have, the Verandertiers are capable of "improvised ontogeny", a mutation like metamorphosis that allows an individual animal or other lifeforms to adapt to a variety of situations and to enable rapid evolution. An animal or person becomes one if they have a "V base" in their genetic makeup that then activates by various causes, usually life threatening ones like allergies, toxins, extreme injuries, etc. (More specifically, the improvised ontogeny is how a normal animal actually becomes a Verandertier, and that Verandertiers are "descendants " of Remnants original inhabitants in the sense that the V-base came from a certain lineage of the latter that survived just long enough for the V-base to cross paths with and somehow inherited by precursors to a select few, if any, of each modern species, which is how almost any animal could have a V-base yet Verandertiers are rarely seen). The resulting form is usually superior to its original counterpart in at least a few ways. As you can tell, a lot about these guys is biological and natural. This is because I am a HUGE fan of bringing creatures to a context like this, justifying why and how beautiful creatures do the things they do. They're also like this to differentiate them from the demonic Grimm, which to me, the huntsmen would be very used to at this point. So something new like the Verandertiers popping out of the blue should provide a couple of interesting and unique challenges for our heroes and villains. What do you think? Anything specific you like?
The reason we like her is because when compared to every other character in RWBY, Neo literally isn't able to say anything stupid enough to fuck over her character.
@@lorddarthfire1560 I know it irks me greatly. I only hope the writers utilize her correctly and she pulls the rug out from under cinder in a beautiful back stab. (Emphasis on the Yet part. ) Digression: it’s. A shame what they’re doing to iron wood
I love Neo for her air of intrigue as well, but I would eventually like to learn some details about her past and why she's the person she currently is. I don't want her to come and go without getting a greater sense of her existence.
I like neo because her character is simple and her design is awesome. I also love the way she fights. Neo is also loyal af! Plus she beats up yang and yang is annoying (heres hoping she beats up Blake next volume)
You can basically just make up your own personality for Neo since she doesn't have a voice, lines, or a backstory. Her body language and facial expressions make her sassy and kind of a confident badass, and her outfit, weapon and fighting style make her feel elegant, but other than those few surface level character traits you can just project whatever you want onto her. Of course you're going to like her when she can be your own idea of a good character instead of whatever the writers decide.
Neo has a cannon backstory though. It's not referenced much in the show or chibi, however the book 'Roman Holiday' tells you everything there is to know about both Neo and Roman. From before they met, how they met, why they mean so much to each other. It adds a lot more depth to both characters and makes you love them all the more. (At least in my case)
Good design, good fights, neat semblance, and she doesn't talk so RT has a harder time messing her up. Also she radiates sass and thats fun as heck. My current take on her is that she has also been convinced into thinking Ruby is the enemy, so her issues of 'disillusionment' come from Cinder shifting gears towards getting back into salem's good graces when she signed on for the chance to take out the target of her revenge.
I have a similar argument for Team STRQ's backstory. I'm open to being proven wrong but I do think that like Neo people are happier with the mystery then they are willing to admit
@@alfonsovelazquez9565 Why do people hate on a show they have never watched? Sometimes I'll just be sitting, daydreaming, and suddenly the line: "They are are so fucked." will pop into my head... Then I come back here to rewatch everything.
The reason I love neo? For a character who NEVER speaks? She conveys SO much with nothing more than a simple look. She never speaks but we KNOW she's a sarcastic, sassy, confident piece of work who looks down on others while having almost elegant cat-like movements. Shes silent..... but shes, in my opinion, FAR more expressive than any other character in the series.
To me, the best part about Neo is the aesthetics of her design (her outfit is literally a Torchwick cosplay + ice cream) and how expressive she is. From her smirk on the train in V2, to the shock when Ruby blows her off the flagship in V3, to when Cinder uses the maiden powers in V6, to when Cinder takes the relic at the end of V7, she is consistently fun in how she conveys intent without words. On top of that, her fighting is just so much cooler to watch than anything else in the show, hands down. That said, my favorite thing about the mystery aspect is how many interpretations people have. Among the fandom, there are people who think she's anything from Roman's girlfriend, to sister, to daughter (either biological or adopted), to a childhood friend who ran away from Brunswick Farms with him. My personal theory is that she was a test subject in an unethical experiment on aura, done by Watts in Atlas, the results of which were needed to build both Penny and the aura transfer machine in V3. And the great thing is that you can go with whatever you like, all of which change the meaning of the story around her. The possibilities are nearly endless.
People just like mute or silent characters. Think of any character who pretty much never talks, and people will probably have a positive opinion of them. Just off the top of my head I can think of, -Chell from Portal -Link -Samus -Doomguy -Michael Myers -Jason Vorhees -Snake Eyes -Gordon Freeman -Bumblebee in several Transformers continuities -Tom and Jerry -Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner -the Pink Panther -Cassandra Cain -Black Bolt -Ghost of Christmas Future -Tyrant from Resident Evil
I think she and Torchwick are two parts of a greater whole when it comes to their appeal. Like one isn't as great as they could be until they are put at the other's side. Both Roman and Neo are my favorite characters, but mainly when they're working together, something we only saw once or twice. They are cool individually, but still.
Beyond all the surface level stuff you mentioned and her being mute plus her being a minor character we actually want to know more about but haven't really gotten, the song One Thing really made me love Neo as a character and how exactly a person that on the surface has no identity and her semblance reflects that, being an illusion, being able to look like others that get attention and yearning for something to change. I love how Torchwick provided her with two things athat are very important to her, a name and a voice and her revenge story has yet to be concluded(after all Neo hasn't killed Cinder for indirectly taking her boss and only means of support in the world out).
Great video dude! It's an interesting question. In a recent interview/talk thing, Miles was asked about Neo amd Torchwick's relationship and he himself said that the crew didn't really have a solid idea on it. Neo could've liked him romantically, or just looked up to him. From the sounds of if the writers really do use Neo in the way you laid out; We know nothing about her except what we need to know. All the rest is up for interpretation.
writer 1 : we need something to do to make our heroes have a major setback in their journey? writer 2: How about neo does something right infront of them?
Because she isn’t ruined, the show realizes why people love her and stick to the mystery. It’s like how Disney screwed over maul by overusing him in rebels and solo and season 7 of clone wars. He wasn’t bad but his whole mystique got ruined. And that’s why Neo is so great, because they keep that part central to her character.
Neo suffers the same problem as Maul: they both had no reason to come back, Maul was dead and Neo was all but dead, hell Neo and Roman being killed off at the same time could’ve helped usher in the idea that things are changing because Roman was nothing but a thug and Neo was his second in command but the series quickly evolved into going on about ancient powers, reincarnation and all this mystical and godly stuff.
The lyrics in the song during her fight with Cinder: "Kill for kill, eye for eye Blood for blood, it's time to die Retribution tastes so sweet Gone's the life that he gave Now revenge is all I crave Retaliation's soon complete I was nowhere, I had no one I felt nothing Lost without a voice And on my own Then a candle's flame brought a brand new name But now you've stolen everything And I'm all alone I had one thing And you've taken it from me A single light, a single friend But you've made that end There was one thing To help escape the misery And now it's all disarrayed You took my whole life away You sent me back to nothing Now you'll pay Pay Life for life, death for death Tit for tat, just one last breath Absolution's nowhere near Cue the scene, now it's time Reparation for your crime Atonement day is finally here I had waited for this meeting For this moment Dreamed about the day I'd make you crawl What a sweet release when you rest in peace Vengeance, justice, finally mine And I'll watch you fall I had one thing And you've taken it from me A single light A single friend But you've made that end There was one thing To help escape the misery And now it's all disarrayed You took my whole life away You sent me back to nothing Now you'll pay the price You destroyed my life After years of suffering Finally had a place to go But not anymore And now it's war And there won't be peace Til I get what I came for I had one thing And you've taken it from me A single light A single friend But you've made that end There was one thing To help escape the misery And now it's all disarrayed You took my whole life away You sent me back to nothing Now you'll pay the price"

@@praetorianrex5571 It's an interesting idea. It would be cool to see a creature that is neutral and not inherently bad or good. However, it seems like you're trying to force the story to fit, rather than molding your idea to fit the story.
Lol I used to think Neo and Roman were cousins. Moving on though, I think Neo would be really good as vigilante. She would have more of an effect to the plot and storyline but that's just wishful thinking. For me, Atlas is like the darkest hour before the dawn, so just as Cinders back story was revealed 3/4 of the way through volume 3, I'm hoping to start volume 8 by having a Cinder back story so we can understand and maybe sympathise with her. But IDK.
Imma tell you why I like her so much; she's the perfect example of show don't tell. Also the way she easily handled Yang showed that there a people out there who are at a whole different level because up to that point nobody could stand up to team RWBY and if they could they were never a match for Yang except for Neo.
Neo and Roman were like a dynamic duo for me. So Neo is my favorite cause it’s like she’s still holding up his half by just existing and having his hat.
What I also like is how they never explained that she can't talk (I think) but that you can figure it out so fast and that you can almost see what she is thinking in her expressions alone
I'm entirely willing to admit I don't want answers to Neo's mystery, because the track record for the RWBY writing team isn't net-positive and she is one of the best characters with no dialogue or backstory as is, there's only so much to gain and everything to lose by chancing it. As for appeal, beyond the design itself, and the part where post season 3/ the loss of Torchwick she's the only "street criminal"/ rogue type villain we have, the illusion semblance is cool to see. It's nice how it contrasts Emeralds "personal illusions", which exist only in a target's mind, by creating "external illusions" that appear in the world that anyone can see, and has a glass aesthetic that plays nicely with illusions as a concept, glass relating to mirrors and reflections while also being solid yet fragile, similar to how her illusions are openly visible and seem to have an amount of physical presence, but like any illusion they're easily breakable. Also shattered/ shattering glass, while a nightmare to actually deal with or clean up, is visually pleasing/ interesting and sounds pretty nice. Also, Importantly, not only do Neo have both a good design and interesting semblance, she actually uses her semblance really well, which is nice to see since illusionists often suffer from the problem of not being used properly since they kinda break fights.
Also it occurred to me seconds arfter posting this, on the comparison with Cynder, there's a big difference between the 2 characters in that Cynder ~clearly~ has a backstory that drives her actions, something that led her to Salem and to the path she's on, and because of how significant a villain Cynder is, that backstory is likely (somewhat) plot-crucial, so to not have been given it for so long feels like they haven't actually thought it out yet. Cynder clearly has something driving her actions, and whatever that is, it matters to her, and due to the actions she takes as a result, it matters to our protagonists and the audience as well, so if the backstory turns out disappointing that'll have a huge knock on effect for the implications that has on everything else she's done, at least up to the season 3 finale. We need to know who Cynder is because who she is defines what she does, and she's done an awful lot, much of it from a position of leader, or as something close to a second in command since Salem was introduced In Neo's case, obviously she has a backstory, everyone does, but it doesn't really matter. How did she meet Torchwick? What was their relationship really? How's she pro level? These are all fair questions, and none of them matter- or at least, there isn't an expectation that they will matter. It'd be fun to know, but we don't lose anything or feel like we're having something important withheld from us for not knowing. Simply, the appeal of her mystery doesn't go away because her mystery only applies to her. Not having an answer to that mystery won't inherently negatively effect the story, which is possibly a situation she can only fit into so neatly exactly because she is a minor character. We don't need to know much at all about who Neo is because we learned everything we needed to know from her first few showings in season 2, and because she mostly works at guard or elite underling type positions the question of what her motive is can be easily understood as "at minimum it's work/ just a job, maybe there's something more going on there like with Torchwick who knows?", but regardless, Neo generally isn't calling the shots, she's given a task and that's the job she does, so there's less of a feeling of "but why though?"
Love your channel! (Subscribed) Also, do you not believe she's the little girl in the picture in Brunswick farms? Why else would they zoom in on it full screen? I'm so curious if they'll reveal that to be true.. yay to her finally being in an opening (vol 8)!!! Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts in rwbyverse Edit: I love the mysterious quality about her too but it's no secret I (and everyone) should love (and scream) for Neapolitan ice cream cause it's AMAZING.
I'd argue the evidence of Brunswick farm being connected to Torchwick and Neo, is pretty compelling. Even without the picture, theres more than enough info in the book they read to assume it belonged to Torchwick. The picture being the icing on the cake to support that theory, but is also what connects Neo to the Torchwick. I don't think too many people would argue against that. That being said, in defense of the video, the only thing we learnt from the Brunswick farm was that Neo and Torchwick grew up together, and knew eachother as children. What their relationship was or if they are related, we still don't know. So technically the only information given to us about Neo was that she had known Torchwick for a long time. Other than giving us a reminder that she still exists, it didn't reveal any new information about how she ended up as a mute or what exactly she went through or even who she is, other than the assumption that they were driven away from the farm by the Apathy grimm and been together since then. It could've been mentioned in the video, but it wouldn't change much, if anything, about the mystery when it comes to Neo and who she is. The Brunswick farm is essentially one of the tiny bits of information he talked about, that is there to keep us interested, without actually revealing anything.
@@Locko2115 thanks for your in depth reply/ analysis! So you think Torchwick is the younger boy? I read a theory that he's the older one with a family. He did say in the fight "it's that I can't afford to lose" implying he already lost a LOT (wife, kid, community) a confirmed or expanded back story to this is all we need! But I do agree with Blizzic the mystery factor is what intrigues everyone about the character. I also love the six swan theory now going around that may or may not be connected to Neos fairytale/ mute influence
@@becca2710 Thanks for the fast reply! (Apologies in advance for the wall of text). Its been a while since I was invested in all of this, but I took a look back and rewatched the episodes they spent at the farm. Since Neo is seen for the first time since Volume 3 just before they enter the house, and the picture is shown literally 1min and 30 sec after Neo's fight with Cinder is over. The striking resemblance of the people in the picture to Torchwick and Neo, the time at which it is introduced to the show and lack of other characters or events in the show that could potentially be connected to the picture and the farm itself, are all things that strengthens that theory. That being said, the idea of Torchwick being the older guy in the picture is interesting. I always assumed Torchwick was the one who wrote the books, but that seems not be the case. Maria Calavera says the books are written by the "head of this household", which would not be the younger boy in the picture. At the same time, in the living room with the fireplace and in the hallway to that room, we see more pictures, and they are all of the second family, the one that is supposedly Neo's. Regardless of whether he is the younger or older one in the picture, I don't think they are written by Torchwick at all. I still think the books are supposed to refer to Torchwick, with all the "new schemes to overcome the odds", but more likely that its where he had his inspiration from in that case, rather than Torchwick being the one to write the books himself. He would also be too young to write a book at the age he is in the picture. I do however still think he is the younger boy in the picture. What he can't afford to lose could still refer to his family/home/community, but as the perspective of a young man, rather than the father/head of the household. I've always considered Torchwick to be older than the other younger characters/students in the show. I would guess he is closer to age with Cinder than he is with team RWBY, but not nearly as old as team STRQ. Torchwick and Neo looks to be close in age in the picture, but I honestly think thats the case. I think Neo is a lot older than she looks, and that she is more similar in age to Cinder and Torchwick than she is to any of the students. Possibly a few years younger than Torchwick, but nothing more than that would be my personal guess. I also think Torchwick is younger than he might look, wouldn't be surprised if he was mid 20s. As for how the general timeline fits with the age of Neo and Torchwick in the picture, I don't know. Then again theres no reason to assume the picture was taken right before the farms "death", theres a good chance the pictures where taken around they time they had the community going, and that the farms "death" came several years later, which would make Neo and Torchwick older than they were in the photo, which again could potentially make Torchwick old enough to write the books, but yeah there are still very good arguments as to why he didn't. I'm confident the farm is related to Neo and Torchwick, and I personally think he is the younger boy, but there are interesting arguments as to why he could be the older one too. I looked up the Swan theory, it looks interesting and I hope there is something to it. Though the mystery of Neo is intriguing, I feel the same way you do and also want a more expanded backstory! It seems things weren't as obvious as I remember them when it comes to the farm and its theories, but I had a lot of fun looking back into it and a good chance there is more to it that I've missed. Rwby is a show I've lived with since the beginning, so I always have fun reading/speculating about it. Thanks for the reply and thanks for reading!
@@Locko2115 :D yea I got into the show late but definitely a part of the fandom now and love theorizing on what's to come! I think it's pretty solid that the books were written by the man that died in that house they were in.. when Qrow went around to the other houses and confirmed more dead bodies I was curious if he actually cared to do a body count and found 2 were missing lol but last thing, I do love how the books show Roman numerals and they show I, III, VI, and finally VIII so we *should* definitely get more about it this volume I can feel it in my bones!! 🤞🏻
And if they do reveal anything, do it out of the way like in the music for example. The music when she fights cinder hints about a troubled life before Torchwick.
Shes the least ruined character thus far due to her not talking. No talking ? No spouting bs. + It can still give us hope that she'll cross cinder and is just waiting for a time to strike while earning her trust lmao
It's sad that one of the clearest motives as to why Neo is not only the best girl but also the best character is cause the current writers have little room to fuck her character up.
Honestly her confidence in her skills as a fighter. I mean she kicked my waifu's (Yang) ass effortlessly, when everyone else was folding before her, And surprised me but not her. It was par foe the course for her to win because she didn't need to say she was better, she knew it. As for the fact that she's under utilized is another selling point for me. Think of it like watching Smackdown or Raw, and an old fan favorite wrestler makes a reemergence, driving the crowd wild. People are now constantly wondering what are they going to do? Why are they here? Where have the been? All those questions pop up instantly. With Neo it's very much the same, only we don't know anything about her so while most of our attention is on the main cast such as Ruby and the gang, we are silently keeping tabs on Neo because we have no clue what she's thinking. And that brings me to my last point, she's a total unknown. We first met her in Volume 2, where the only thing she did was stand around. She wasn't introduced, she never introduced herself, she was just there in the background. The next time we met her,She made a splash by totally anti-ing Yang's attack and escaping with Torchwick. And the subsequent times after that she has had dobe major things in minor roles. She beat Yang, was apart of Cinder's infiltration team into the Vytal Festival, broke out Torchwick and for a period of four Volumes disappeared from the scene. She didn't die, that much we all took note of, but she never reemerged either. And this built more mystery to her character. She vanished, but still held a presence in our minds as an enigma that we didn't even get to unravel, one that we still haven't unravelled to this day and honestly, 8f the show ended and we never unravelled that enigma, I would be fine with that, because the thrill of a hunt or a chase isn't in getting what we want it's in process. And if we get to a point where we get it and it doesn't live up to our expectations, we'll feel equal parts foolish, frustrated, and dissatisfied at the same time. But if at the end of the journey, we see that our chase has led us around in circles but, irregardless of that we feel satisfied, even after not getting what we were after, it feels cathartic in a way. Like discovering El Dorado but knowing that if you make your findings known, you are destroying a mystery that has boggled the mind of humanity and still will so long as it exists. And that's why I partly like Neo, she's my treasure hunt. If I find out more about her and I'm not satisfied, I'll feel like an idiot. But if I find out more about her and I'm satisfied or if I don't get any information about her at all by the end of the journey, I'll be able to look back and be content, because some mysteries are better left unsolved.
So the song that played during Neo and Cynder's fight (and also at the end of this video) called One Thing, gives us context on what Neo really felt for torchtwick, he found her with no voice and took her in...that's just my speculation...
Plus neo doesn't talk and always use her scroll, and her semblance is cool. like she change into anyone and be a spy as different person. And she has heteromnia and split hair color like, that's cool 😍😍😍😍😍
Think the main selling point for Neo is that she is underused, but she steals the show for every scene she is in.

@@eren34558 The show can be bad? Like writing, animation, pacing. We don't have to be into identity politics to think that a show is poorly made.

So far, Neo remains one of the few credible villains in the show, given she got a relic which is one of the things Salem needed.

I want Neo to off Cinder in a moment of weakness. That would be satisfying to see.
Your succinct, pointed script-writing is amazing.
As far as it goes with Neo, I was frustrated with how she defaulted to following Cinder in Volume 7 as well, but I don't think the answer is "show only as much Neo as is necessary for her to be engaging in the plot while remaining an enigma herself." I want her to have a backstory eventually, but it could honestly be like 20 seconds long at absolute most, have no dialogue, and show her origins only as a means to lead into her acting on her own against Cinder (finally, whenever it does happen.)
Not every character needs a backstory, and we've gotten most if not all of the information about Neo as we need, but I don't see the reason to keep Neo as much of an enigma as she is.
Her allusion being Mary Poppins makes every point you make in this video hit so much harder
At most, it was a positive relationship for her" (or something to that)
So if they haven't settled on it, I doubt we'll get that big Neo backstory drop haha.
I would looove that
Actually, I think the reason Neo has become more interesting to Cinder is simple:
She delivers what she promises.
She hinted she was going to be a fun badass in her first appearence.
She payed it off by spanking Yang.
She promised she would come after Cinder.
She delivered.
We expect her to kick the shit out of JNR
She does.
Cinder in Volume 5 was ALSO motivated by an onscreen event, and she was actually LESS compelling than when she was motivated by an implied philosophy and backstory)
We expect the rematch with her to have the same weight and Gravitas as her fight with Pyrrha... it's a letdown.

Implying Adam and Hazels characters were “expanded upon”
I like Neo because she's a little bit of everything like the ice cream. People can see in her what they want to see which is why her not talking works so well. With a voice it would probably skew her personality in a certain direction. But as it is we're left to always guess what she's thinking. She's simple and complex. She's strong but feminine. Just a well designed character.
Honestly this video sums up about how I feel towards Neo
And yeah, while I lean more into the corner of Torchwick being my favorite character I still absolutely adore Neo.
Where did Yang go wrong?
I could probably guess, but I want to find out.
@@TMS-Oddbot The moment she lost her arm.

Yang is annoying. Glad she got her ass beat by Neo. Neo is way better.
Also I still think Neo could whoop Yang’s ass easily even now. Wbu?
Oh boy, an opportunity to use my favorite Tolkien quote:
“Part of the attraction of The L.R. is, I think, due to the glimpses of a large history in the background: an attraction like that of viewing far off an unvisited island, or seeing the towers of a distant city gleaming in a sunlit mist.
It’s part of the reason side characters can end up more beloved than main characters because you don’t see their flaws and they are always who you see them as
Neo's semblance is illusions so who knows how old she really is
She could be as old as Maria maybe her skill comes from years of experience 😱

Here they are;
The Verandertier(s) (from tier verander, German for "changed beast"), are creatures (types of animal life to be exact) native to the world of Remnant, being direct and indirect descendants of the planet's original inhabitants (who occupied the planet before the Gods remade it as they please, thinking it was a blank slate).

But body language is just as expressive as talking. She does have personality
Simple, cuz shes precious
Good design, good fights, neat semblance, and she doesn't talk so RT has a harder time messing her up. Also she radiates sass and thats fun as heck. My current take on her is that she has also been convinced into thinking Ruby is the enemy, so her issues of 'disillusionment' come from Cinder shifting gears towards getting back into salem's good graces when she signed on for the chance to take out the target of her revenge.

8:11 I love how shocked she looks when Oscar clings to her legs and then she just smiles before she escapes thru an illusion.
I do love Yang and Weiss but this video really does explain why Neo is a close second.
Your comment section is so cursed. Please keep doing what you're doing, you're quite good at it.

Both Roman and Neo are my favorite characters, but mainly when they're working together, something we only saw once or twice. They are cool individually, but still.
we get to know a little more about her and why she was so attached to Torchwick in the song "One Thing" by Jeff Williams
Everyone loves smol ice cream waifu.
The lyrics in the song during her fight with Cinder:
"Kill for kill, eye for eye
Blood for blood, it's time to die
Retribution tastes so sweet
Gone's the life that he gave
Now revenge is all I crave
Retaliation's soon complete
I was nowhere, I had no one
I felt nothing
Lost without a voice
And on my own
Then a candle's flame brought a brand new name
But now you've stolen everything
And I'm all alone
I had one thing
And you've taken it from me
A single light, a single friend
But you've made that end
There was one thing
To help escape the misery
And now it's all disarrayed
You took my whole life away
You sent me back to nothing
Now you'll pay
Pay
Life for life, death for death
Tit for tat, just one last breath
Absolution's nowhere near
Cue the scene, now it's time
Reparation for your crime
Atonement day is finally here
I had waited for this meeting
For this moment
Dreamed about the day I'd make you crawl
What a sweet release when you rest in peace
Vengeance, justice, finally mine
And I'll watch you fall
I had one thing
And you've taken it from me
A single light
A single friend
But you've made that end
There was one thing
To help escape the misery
And now it's all disarrayed
You took my whole life away
You sent me back to nothing
Now you'll pay the price
You destroyed my life
After years of suffering
Finally had a place to go
But not anymore
And now it's war
And there won't be peace
Til I get what I came for
I had one thing
And you've taken it from me
A single light
A single friend
But you've made that end
There was one thing
To help escape the misery
And now it's all disarrayed
You took my whole life away
You sent me back to nothing
Now you'll pay the price"
Love this! Neo is so fascinating!
She has made an appearance in all the ops; her voice actor is the singer, Casey Lee Williams
Beating Jnr+Ozpin while the plot actively worked against her is really impressive.
Cuz she looks cool
Well you can't argue with that!
She's adorable
And then "Roman Holiday" happened.
Because her introduction was a masterpiece!! Her fight with Yang on the train was the best fight👏
That was such a great finishing line
With every season that comes out, the more I think Cinder is ruining the show. She shouldn't have just made Neo another Lackey and that pisses me off
Could I ask you for some input on a creature or two I'm working on for RWBY, please?
@@praetorianrex5571 Me? Sure..
@@dylw4667 cool!
Here they are;
The Verandertier(s) (from tier verander, German for "changed beast"), are creatures (types of animal life to be exact) native to the world of Remnant, being direct and indirect descendants of the planet's original inhabitants (who occupied the planet before the Gods remade it as they please, thinking it was a blank slate).
@@praetorianrex5571 It's an interesting idea. It would be cool to see a creature that is neutral and not inherently bad or good. However, it seems like you're trying to force the story to fit, rather than molding your idea to fit the story.
@@praetorianrex5571 Personally I do like the idea.
That's actually fascinating.
Smol, cute, mute, shortstack makes my big depression the small depression
I love her because she's so badass with an umbrella.
I just love her because she’s mysterious, is a minor character that still leaves a major impact, and doesn’t have to say a word to leave said impact!
We need to know who Cynder is because who she is defines what she does, and she's done an awful lot, much of it from a position of leader, or as something close to a second in command since Salem was introduced
In Neo's case, obviously she has a backstory, everyone does, but it doesn't really matter.
I like neo for the peer fact her eyes match her hair and the fact she’s literally a mystery
Cinder is my favorite character in RWBY
This is great, I love that phrase at the end.
She fights with class and elegance and i like it
Love your channel! (Subscribed) Also, do you not believe she's the little girl in the picture in Brunswick farms? Why else would they zoom in on it full screen? I'm so curious if they'll reveal that to be true.. yay to her finally being in an opening (vol 8)!!! Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts in rwbyverse
Edit: I love the mysterious quality about her too but it's no secret I (and everyone) should love (and scream) for Neapolitan ice cream cause it's AMAZING.
@@becca2710 Never too late to join! Number VIII on the book, thats an interesting detail, now I'm looking forward to that too ^^
Neo in volume 8 is the best!!!!!!!
I love ice cream! Why would I not love the ice cream lady!?
i cant believe that you didnt even mention the fact that her design is based on icecream
Her eyes also change color when she blinks, since she’s neapolitan ice cream.
And if they do reveal anything, do it out of the way like in the music for example. The music when she fights cinder hints about a troubled life before Torchwick.
she doesn't annoy me because she doesn't talk
Actions speak louder than words simple as that
Shes the least ruined character thus far due to her not talking. No talking ? No spouting bs.
+ It can still give us hope that she'll cross cinder and is just waiting for a time to strike while earning her trust lmao
Blizzic's back!!
I like Neo and Blake too because I can relate.
Blake because oppression and Neo because of how much marginalized groups arem't really heard.
Fun fact: Neo can speak her voice is just tired from singing all the songs in RWBY
she didnt say a single word the entire series and was able to steal the show every time
Her own path is with the lamp i guess..
(Coming back I didn't realize I ever commented here)
She fell. Bruh lol
It's sad that one of the clearest motives as to why Neo is not only the best girl but also the best character is cause the current writers have little room to fuck her character up.
Let's talk more about the character who get's across so much personality without a word.
I love Neo because she is a disabled character (done right) kicking ass. I have mental disabilities, so I feel validated.
... the real enemy they faced was the destroyer lady in the end. She even killed the bad guys.
My reason for liking Neo is because she's a badass who's cute and beautiful and I also have a thing for heterochromia and pink hair
When Neo "died" in Volume 8 I was indescive wether to be sad about her or Ruby. I choose NEO!
Quick information:in the present neo now has a backstory in "roman holidays" it's a book novel that they made
I just like the mystery. It's curious who she is inside
I also think it helps that she doesn't talk in a series where most dialogue is... questionable at best.
You mean like anime dubbed?
At least none of the lines here in this show are cringe I
Neo and Roman comic dub!

@@eren34558 - Plenty of them are dude. Maybe if you weren’t a blind fanboy you would see that.
