I disagree with your analysis on one point: after passing though the ignition switch, the power does go back under the hood. So an under hood problem can blow the fuse (if the car is on).

    • @ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO
      @ADVANCEDLEVELAUTO  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Yes, you are correct! I was mistaken. The short could have come from anywhere after the ignition switch. Thank you for pointing this out!

The key lock actuator was just very suspect because it would intermittently not release the key, even before the fuse blew.

An amp clamp to monitor current draw may have helped. The key release solenoid is super suspect, especially since that was a complaint before the fuse blew. Would be cool to see a current ramp of the suspect solenoid in action!

Eric one thing you might consider when working with blown fuse circuits is the use of a clamp on ammeter. The circuit should be running near 50% or less of the rated fuse. If you see it running 90% or so, something is failing and with time will blow the fuse.

    Sorry for off topic comment
I am dealing with similar situation you showed in the older video about leaking fuel pressure regulator in 01 Toyota Highlander.
I am working on 05 Rav-4 that has been sitting for almost 2 years
Since I don't have fuel pressure gauge I will observe the fuel pulsation damper screw; under pressure it should stick out.
You can also prime the fuel line by installing jumper across the circuit opening relay socket (large spades)
Turning the key to on will activate the gas pump , the pressure should build up in 3 seconds.
The prime system is used on Toyotas equipped with with MAP sensor (98to 99 Corolla , and 92 to 2001 Camry 4 cylinder)
Wish me luck! Thanks for your videos!

I was able to follow you on this one. I saw the nesting stuff under the hood and thought rodent damage too. a bad lock actuator sounds like the culprit to me since it had power but still would not release the key. That one arc inside the actuator burned the short in the clear but damaged the mechanism. id carefully take it apart and see if there is any burn marks.

Best repair method anyway. Used parts will save your tail most of the time and the best part usually is, the part is OEM. Very legitimate method for diag, using the wire diagrams to know the path of the powers. All is well. His shop should recommend a good cleaning of the leaves etc. and advise his customer to avoid parking under those trees if they can.
FYI...I bought a Topdon battery tester 2 years back and tested my 850 CCA battery that was 6 years old and still starting the engine just fine. It said...replace battery. I went down to my local battery sales mom and pop shop and they used an older battery tester which gave it a pass. I put the Topdon on another car I have with a newer battery and it passed. Here we are 2 years later and an 8 1/2 year old battery that keeps failing the Topdon test yet the darn thing still starts the 89 GMC Suburban as usual. Sometimes, you have to wonder if the newer "computer chip" designed battery testers are any better than using an analog load test meter.

I also noticed lights and other things that are running off the mains. So maybe a large current draw caused problems when they tried starting. This would have blown a fuse.
Heated seats, lights, radio, hvac. All this running on dead batteries would have definitely caused a hard surge enough to blow a fuse.
Comfortability vs Just providing more then enough power when starting could help a issue like this.

Hi, I wonder if the 2007 SRX also has a key release button hidden underneath the steering wheel? I took a quick look at it and see maybe 3 or 4 little circular areas but didn't want to poke around until I could locate the correct place to look. I tried looking at owners manuals on line, but of course, there is no mention of that little secret in the manual. Any advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated. The guy that I took the car to said that we start at $150.00 just for them to test it, and then starting at $300.00+ if the ignition needs to be replaced at a minimum. He did not think it would be a fuse! So, for the time being, if I could at least free the key from the ignition so that I do not drain my battery or cause any other damage, that would be helpful. TIA
