Food derives from culture, so if you don't learn about it, you'll never truly understand the root of their cuisine. At best you can appreciate their techniques, ingredients, and flavours, on a surface level, just from your own cultural perspective.

@@apt5044 There's no way you can review food from around the world without having respect for other cultures, frankly; you''ll note that when he does compare foods to other foods he's eaten he does so in qualitative ways, never something like, "oh, eating this makes me want to eat that" or similar denigrating statements; always things like, "the crispiness of this pork reminds me of Lechon". Even if in the end it's something that tastes foul as all heck to your palate (immediate flashbacks to his reaction to the bile and blood combination he drank in Africa), he's still willing to try it at least once, as he experiences their culture.
This was very graphic, insightful and educational, extremely eye opening. I really do appreciate that you take your time to walk us through the rituals as well as the ceremonies within these cultures. Strength be with you and the crew sonny.

There is something satisfying about this. Knowing that you’re never forgotten about and always remembered and cared for. Still love even after decades or years of being dead. They never forget about you. Bless them
I teared up when I saw the dad had given his baby candy. Such an interesting ritual, and you handled it so well, there are so many videos I've seen that handle this celebration and topic horribly.
I love that these people actually acknowledge, visit, and appreciate their dead. They are so closely connected with their environment and have a true sense and appreciation for both life and death. It's an ever-present reminder that we all live, find meaning, pursue dreams, and then die. They don't simply bury someone and then forget about them so that their children never know who their loved ones are. They get to see them and appreciate all of their lost loved ones and see how their children will one day revisit them. It feels like they're still so close and have a relationship, even with people they weren't yet born to meet. I just love that more than I can even express right now. But I have a feeling the local cemetery would have a problem with me digging up my family members for a reunion...
I'm Indonesian but not from the Toraja tribe. The first time I heard stories about their traditions, I was in elementary school. At the time I thought, "it is such a weird tradition". But now....growing up and experiencing the lost of grandparents (from both sides, my father and mother), an aunt, a cousin, a cousin-in-law, I appreciate their tradition even more. They keep the "sick" body and still talking to them, and then doing the Ma'nene years later, now I think it's a gentle way of doing final separation with your loved ones. Yes, some of them are still crying, but crying is still much better and healthier than holding the grieve inside.
Watching this made me sad but happy, and I nearly cried at the dad and his baby daughter. It was beautiful tho. The travel from sick to death is a rough one it is a loving one with these people ❤️
Hey, seems like you guys confused about the deceased name. She's Dorce Tandi. The "Jemaat Penanian" is probably an organization who sent the board. Here in Indonesia it's really common to send messages in the form of wreaths on a square board, as we called it "karangan bunga" (with or without flowers) on important occasions. The sender name will always be on the bottom part while the recipient will always be on the middle.
I am about to comment about this matter. Hope the editing team can reedit the video to pay respect to the deceased. This episode is so epic, this youtube channel has evolved not only food review show but exploring the unique culture and tradition around the world also.
This definitely resonated with me, a parents pain for the death of a child. My son was 4 months old. He celebrated his 6 th 🕊heavenly🕊 birthday July. Blessings to all those who’ve lost or have any pain from such.
He will always be thanks for you for loving him in afterlife realms. Ain't tried blindly comforting yourself , but humanely love is powerful. Agape = unconditional love
I have 3 children, they are on perfect health condition and I cry to just imagine the same situation as if what have happened to you is happened to mine. be strong my friend. my big condolence to your lost.
3:44 “Jemaat” means (church) congregation, not her name 😂 And 10:24 “Bapak” means father and “Mama” means mother, those are not their names 😅 It’s just a form of address. Anyways, thank you for the family of the late Dorce Tandi for welcoming Sonny and introducing our country’s culture to the world!

Sonny this is what separates you from other TH-camrs. You bring other peoples culture, way of life and understanding to people across the world. Love what you do!
Dear Sonny, i don't know if you will ever read this, but i just want to tell you that my mom loved watching your show and channel. she was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 breast cancer. throughout her battle, she loved watching your show, as it brought comfort to her. as her body weakened, it became harder for my mom to even go anywhere- let alone travel and even do simple tasks. but she found such comfort in watching your videos. she praised you for being such a kind and funny soul, and she loved how you were always so respectful and willing to try the food and practices of other cultures. she loved your how humorous and thoughtful you always were. sadly, she passed away a day after her birthday, on October 26 recently at the age of 47 after a 7 month battle with cancer. my mom was an amazing person who loved to cook and was always so compassionate and giving; bringing smiles to everyone she met. there was always someone who had nothing but good to say about her. she's my inspiration to be kind and generous. i'm sad she's no longer here, and i do miss her dearly with her jokes, yummy food, and non stop marathons of the best food review show ever. but I'm also glad she's in a much better place now. no more pain or suffering. thank you for bringing my mom comfort during such a difficult time in her life. i miss her and love her so much. love, juicy
I’m sorry for your loss, it’s not easy losing a close member and I understand your pain and struggles as I’ve lost my dad from stage 4 cancer too, but know that your mother is in a better place watching down on you and watching the show with you, stay strong ❤️
@MrSteal thank you for your kind words, its been hard and though i think i'm doing okay, sometimes it hits me all over again. but i try to think of the good memories and remind myself shes no longer suffering. i pray and send my condolences to you as well, may they all rest in paradise 🙏
It's crazy how much they love thier family even at death still show them as much love and how the world change and share it to their love before they leave home... and that is ❤️
Awww Sonny I've watched you for 2 plus yrs. I've never seen a video I don't love and find myself completely lost in. You and your team are amazing ♥️. Love from 🇬🇾
What I really love about your show is that you show respect where It's necessary... And the way how you show their dead people and their culture ist really respectful. Thank you!
As someone who is currently grieving, this video brought up so many emotions for me, but overall positive. It is in a way deeply comforting to know that their loved ones are never forgotten and in this particular culture, are very much celebrated. It gives me a sense of hope, almost, that the person I lost will also never be forgotten either. Thank you Sonny for making these videos that explore food as a bridge to explore the wider culture. Will always support this content. ❤
Same for me but it had a negative effect seeing how decomposed these bodies are makes me imagine how my loved ones in the grave look now and it’s honestly very depressing
@@slytroopah7285 that's very understandable, your feelings are completely valid. i'm sorry you're struggling right now, i believe things will get better for you soon
Honestly I think I would've past out around all those bodies but Sonny you are definitely made for this creative interesting dialogue we Americans take for granted. Its already hard for me going to funerals honoring love ones so I can only imagine revisiting the bodies of deceased family & friends mummified remains how emotional it must be. Blessings to the families in these memorial ceremonies. Thanks Sonny for another amazing clip of educational value. Peace ✌
All i can say is shocking and emotional tears in my eyes watching this, I wish here in the USA we could respect our living relatives as much as they respect their dead relatives, Sonny you knocked this one out of the park, Bless you and all the best ever food show.
Seeing the child revisited after death:Huge culture shock. I a major history buff and adore Geopolitics and global culture and dont consider myself amateurish on those things, but this really taught me something about human culture. I was shocked, almost frightened, but intrigued and it completely in an instant made me rethink how we honor our dead, especially how we treat their remains in regard to their preserved presence on earth. Such a great show man.
I don't think I have ever watched a food video that gave me so many different emotions while watching. Just goes to show how different cultures are. This one is so different than anything I have ever thought. It sounds incredibly creepy. But as I watched, the love, care & respect they still, to this day, give their lost family members is so incredibly touching!! That 3 day old baby... her daddy giving her candy that kids today over there enjoy. Brushing their hair, changing them into nice fresh clean clothes, dusting them off, the gentleness handling of them... I respect what they do. Everyone's culture has differences. This culture just shows that the love never dies. It's always there. I respect what they are doing. 😭💜💔🙏
This is why I watch ur channel sonny, I truly enjoy how u show other cultures yes mostly through food yes but their traditions as well...thank u Sonny and thank u to ur crew who films it
I thought I would be much more bothered by this as I have no connection to the culture, but no. This is a beautiful ceremony with a wonderful purpose. It seems like a much more intimate version of Dia de La Muerta, and the respect and love given to the departed is just utterly humbling. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

I’ve never seen such an outpouring of love for the dead. So many people are afraid of the dead and the stigmas around death. The baby grabbed my whole heart. I lost my first grand daughter to still birth 18 yrs ago and I’ve often wondered if there is anything left of her in that cold casket. Probably not because we didn’t embalm her. Thanks to Sonny for being Sonny!!

Sonny, up front and center for us. I had so many mixed emotions watching this video, as we’ve ALL lost loved ones. Once again, you’ve shown us traditions that I never even knew existed. So much action in one day-Sonny, how do you process it all? You’re honestly, THE best at what you do! On a funny note, it was hilarious to see Sonny wait for Andre to take a bite of the black nut fruit pork first, then follow suit. I can't help but just respect the way you go through this without looking disturbed in any way, one problem I always have with death is the smell, death has a smell, I've had to bury too many loved ones to know this unfortunately. No matter how well embalmed and protected bodies are, this is just another level, you're a strong man
In Indonesia, there is a village, Trunyan village, where they just put the dead body in the nature under the Taru Menyan trees. The dead body doesn't smelly because of the tree can neutralize the bad odor of the dead body

I was confused too, never know Jemaat can be someone's name.
exactly. her name is Dorce
I think it's what they do when people don't want their real names on the episode. They also did this for Mr. Bapak and Mrs. Mama.
I am about to comment about this matter. Hope the editing team can reedit the video to pay respect to the deceased.
This episode is so epic, this youtube channel has evolved not only food review show but exploring the unique culture and tradition around the world also.
Jemaat means church omG
This definitely resonated with me, a parents pain for the death of a child. My son was 4 months old. He celebrated his 6 th 🕊heavenly🕊 birthday July. Blessings to all those who’ve lost or have any pain from such.

3:44 “Jemaat” means (church) congregation, not her name 😂 And 10:24 “Bapak” means father and “Mama” means mother, those are not their names 😅 It’s just a form of address. Anyways, thank you for the family of the late Dorce Tandi for welcoming Sonny and introducing our country’s culture to the world!
yup, her name is dorce tandi, I didn't give attention until 6:11, LMAO
@@jiburpak539 I wonder how it came to be. Did they look at their video files together and then just decided “Yeap, Jemaat was definitely her name. No need to confirm or double check with anyone who’d know better!”😂

This is amazing, I love that you can put this on TH-cam for free and have it be such a well produced show. I love your respect for other cultures.
❤❤❤
History/Food/CNN missed out on you Sonny and crew. Well done. This particular episode is worthy of some crazy awards. It’s incredible guys. Congrats.
As an indonesian
All i can say is
*thank you*
Bless you and all the best ever food show
Yeah it’s amazing yet sad how someone from outside Indonesia can showcase our cultures way better than most people within
i'm just curious or rather interested on how they preserve the dead body? if that's okay to ask? thank you in advance😊
@@yakun613 im not sure myself and im indonesian but not torajan, but different sources says differently, some say it’s just like embalming, some say it’s with natural “herbs”, some say they use certain minerals from the mountainside. Idk tho, and of course it’s totally okay to ask about other people’s cultures. Maybe someone else can provide more accurate information.
I am not trying to be disrespectful but I just thought I could ask this do Indonesia or part of Indonesia, are there Christians who just bury the body in soil

Sonny this is what separates you from other TH-camrs. You bring other peoples culture, way of life and understanding to people across the world. Love what you do!

Dear Sonny,
i don't know if you will ever read this, but i just want to tell you that my mom loved watching your show and channel. she was diagnosed with an aggressive stage 4 breast cancer. throughout her battle, she loved watching your show, as it brought comfort to her. as her body weakened, it became harder for my mom to even go anywhere- let alone travel and even do simple tasks. but she found such comfort in watching your videos. she praised you for being such a kind and funny soul, and she loved how you were always so respectful and willing to try the food and practices of other cultures. she loved your how humorous and thoughtful you always were. sadly, she passed away a day after her birthday, on October 26 recently at the age of 47 after a 7 month battle with cancer. my mom was an amazing person who loved to cook and was always so compassionate and giving; bringing smiles to everyone she met. there was always someone who had nothing but good to say about her. she's my inspiration to be kind and generous. i'm sad she's no longer here, and i do miss her dearly with her jokes, yummy food, and non stop marathons of the best food review show ever. but I'm also glad she's in a much better place now. no more pain or suffering.
thank you for bringing my mom comfort during such a difficult time in her life. i miss her and love her so much.
love, juicy
I’m sorry for your loss, it’s not easy losing a close member and I understand your pain and struggles as I’ve lost my dad from stage 4 cancer too, but know that your mother is in a better place watching down on you and watching the show with you, stay strong ❤️
I hope he sees this
@FAYIE thank you 🙏 i just hope he has and knows what an impact he had 😔
@MrSteal thank you for your kind words, its been hard and though i think i'm doing okay, sometimes it hits me all over again. but i try to think of the good memories and remind myself shes no longer suffering. i pray and send my condolences to you as well, may they all rest in paradise 🙏
I’m so sorry for your loss! I’m sure you make her proud and happy ! Stay strong juicy.
It's crazy how much they love thier family even at death still show them as much love and how the world change and share it to their love before they leave home... and that is ❤️
I will never disrespect their customs, nor will I look down upon them. This village is definitely special, and truly love their fallen. ❣️
wrrr, no such thing as down, up, or love or etc
stay strong 💪
Same for me but it had a negative effect seeing how decomposed these bodies are makes me imagine how my loved ones in the grave look now and it’s honestly very depressing
@@slytroopah7285 that's very understandable, your feelings are completely valid. i'm sorry you're struggling right now, i believe things will get better for you soon
@@TomAndersonn thank you :)
Peace ✌
The hurt in that man's eyes when he said " I miss her", broke my heart! Oh sweet friend, we miss them all who've passed on. 🖤🖤🖤
All i can say is shocking and emotional tears in my eyes watching this, I wish here in the USA we could respect our living relatives as much as they respect their dead relatives, Sonny you knocked this one out of the park, Bless you and all the best ever food show.
❤❤❤
Seeing the child revisited after death:Huge culture shock. I a major history buff and adore Geopolitics and global culture and dont consider myself amateurish on those things, but this really taught me something about human culture. I was shocked, almost frightened, but intrigued and it completely in an instant made me rethink how we honor our dead, especially how we treat their remains in regard to their preserved presence on earth. Such a great show man.
Well said.
Even for me (as Indonesian) it's a huge culture shock first time seeing this ritual 😂
Wow I'm shocked to see a real well thought out and written comment lol I don't write properly but reading your comment I was like dam lol
@@achmaddaru9456 not to be disrespectful or insensitive but am just so curious, do the bodies smell?
@@kinyuadoreen5529 according to my several experiences, the bodies don't smell at all.
I saw documentary about this and the people also clean their loved ones thoroughly so there’s no bacteria and insects on the bodies ❤
wrrr
Thank you for this! And love to Indonesian people and their traditions
This is why I watch ur channel sonny, I truly enjoy how u show other cultures yes mostly through food yes but their traditions as well...thank u Sonny and thank u to ur crew who films it
❤❤❤
I thought I would be much more bothered by this as I have no connection to the culture, but no. This is a beautiful ceremony with a wonderful purpose. It seems like a much more intimate version of Dia de La Muerta, and the respect and love given to the departed is just utterly humbling. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
This is what the children love nowadays and This is for you . This hits hard mehn..
This is the current candy 🍭 and here’s yours. In a way this is a very good way to remember the dead
Thank you so much for Sonny and your BEFRS team for covering this! As Indonesian, I heard about Ma'nene before but not this extent. I cried a lot watching this episode. So emotional and eye opening, even for Indonesian as me.
❤❤❤❤
You have to respect and love what sonny and crew is doing 💯🙏you’re blessed
I’ve never seen such an outpouring of love for the dead. So many people are afraid of the dead and the stigmas around death. The baby grabbed my whole heart. I lost my first grand daughter to still birth 18 yrs ago and I’ve often wondered if there is anything left of her in that cold casket. Probably not because we didn’t embalm her. Thanks to Sonny for being Sonny!!
This is the single most ..umm..touching moving episode I've seen..and those words do not come close to explaining what I felt while watching the end of this. Thank you people of Indonesia for sharing with the world. Thank you sonny for being the vessel. God bless you

How honored you all must have felt being invited to witness such an intimate part of these people's lives. Thank you for doing such an amazing job showing these wonderful people and their traditions to the world!!!!
I would have to say, this is by far one of the best content you and your team have ever produced. Kudos, BEFRS.
Bro, this is one of your best videos. What these people do to honor thier dead may be weird to us but is also sad, beautiful and happy. Props to you for actually participating. Keep up the good work sir.
This channel is more of cultural heritage than food. I like the way he makes it look so effortless, as I content creator this is a lot of work. Well done to you and your team.
The more that i discover how different we all are in terms of practices/cultures(foods included) etc, the more i realize how beautiful the world really is.
The respect and true interest and curiosity for other cultures you have is unmatched. Keep going sonny!
I love the fact that you are showing / capturing this experience from a place of respect and not trying to project these practices as weird or taboo. Lots of respect 🙌🙌🙏🙏

this intimacy with the dead is on another level. So much respect to "original" cultures
I’m not sure I could do that, knowing that there’s a chance that I’d be poisoned…… Take care and travel safely Sonny and Mrs. Sonny! Thank you both and thanks to the entire BEFRS team!!
Wow, your vids are going from a food show, to a cultural food tour around the world, and people's way of living. Going from day of the dead here in México, to actually bringing the dead back to their lives. Amazing vid.
Very fascinating series. Especially how they view death and the traditions that goes into it.
You couldn’t of said that last part any better in regards to how people see a photo of their love ones or holding their loved ones there isn’t much of a difference symbolically I have so much respect for what you do and how much you respect other cultures and then some it’s amazing
I’m really impressed how you keep it very respectful when events like this takes place.
This was actually a really beautiful episode. It's great to be able to see how other cultures deal with death & departure, sadness & love. For a westerner, it seemed a quite different, however the community seems to be amazing & kind people. Thanks for making this.

What an episode it was!! This episode explains fine line difference between “culture” and “religion”.. Thank you for all your efforts.. BEFR ☀️🍀♥️

oh! I've never seen buah keluak (black nut) used that way before - here in Singapore it comes pre-fermented to remove the poisons, then we fry it up with some rempah and chicken/pork + stew it. So amazing that these kind of culture exist. A big clap to all the people behind this research and making it possible for us to see this amazing culture.
This was his third times visiting the same place and it kept him blow away...(as he mentioned)
you can find the same culture in Madagascar, because 1500 years ago Austronesian people from Borneo and Sulawesi migrated to Madagascar and built a culture there, and now the people that live in Madagascar the Malagasy are descendant of these same people in Indonesia and Borneo.
The "Black Nut" in Java is called Kluwek, in Sunda it's called Pucung, it also known as Pangium, is a tall tree native to the mangrove swamps of Southeast Asia, it produces a large poisonous fruit which can be made edible by right method of cooking. In Java it's the ingredient that makes "Rawon" soup looks black (& also savory)
The word "pangium" came from Dayak language of North Borneo, "pangi". Dusun Dayak of East Malaysia.
@@borneandayak6725 Iya, di Toraja juga kluwak dipanggil buah "Pangi". Mngkin karena masih 1 nenek moyang Proto Melayu dgn Toraja 😅

i knew i had seen this somewhere, i've eaten a version of this dish in singapore (buah keluak?), it was with pork but the nutshells where restuffed with the cooked nut, and all i could think of while i was eating it was "this is like dark chocolate cake" and it was great.

I really like how Sonny and the team get involved while showing respect to the families, community. I learn a lot from such videos, have never expect to learn such culture, celebrations, food. I hope such content will be well preserved for the future generations, for knowledge and entertainment!
I can't help but just respect the way you go through this without looking disturbed in any way, one problem I always have with death is the smell, death has a smell, I've had to bury too many loved ones to know this unfortunately. No matter how well embalmed and protected bodies are, this is just another level, you're a strong man
they used frankincense for that, they always burned it in the room were the Mak nenek live.
In Indonesia, there is a village, Trunyan village, where they just put the dead body in the nature under the Taru Menyan trees. The dead body doesn't smelly because of the tree can neutralize the bad odor of the dead body
I love Calvin as a co-host. I’ve watched and rewatched every episode that he’s in with Sonny. And, I’ll keep watching them over and over again. Of course I’ve watched all of Sonny’s videos more than a few times, cause he Rocks....but the ones with Calvin are still my favorites. Ahhhh peace! ✌🏻💗
I love your energy for communicating with the locals ❤️🇮🇩
The amount of the pork they pour was so generous....not only as a symbol, but real feast. Thanks for giving us such great videos Sonny...and team. Greeting from Yogayakarta, Java Indonesia
Pardon me but at 3:46 the deceased name isn't Jemaat but Dorce Tandi. Jemaat means the church people, for this case in Penanian. Thus, in the dialogue and later information, her name is Mrs. Tandi, or Mrs. Dorce
Edit: church name
Also shout to the cameraperson and editors. Very sensitive and caring shoot and editing, never too focus on the dead body or animal slaughtering process. Keep up the good work. I wish there's a TH-cam Video Award, I'll choose you as my fave channel.
