Check out Sheath using the link in the description! They're very good for the man-pickle.
Since filming this - I've been asked on national TV to discuss it and other articles have popped up. I'm still at a loss why this is even news, but like I said at the end of this video - if this somehow starts a conversation about obesity and how we attempt to justify and excuse it, then I'm happy for that. Nobody should have to sit through this type of situation. And American Airlines - you call me any time to negotiate my reparations. ;D

This happened to me on a Southwest flight. I complained afterwards and asked for 1/3rd of my seat price refunded. I wasn't expecting them to refund the full price.
Edit. Yes, Southwest airlines refunded the full seat price. This was in 2009, Jacksonville to Vegas flight.
      And their response:
      Dear Oliver,
We regret that you experienced an uncomfortable flight when you recently traveled with us since another Customer's girth encroached upon your space onboard the aircraft. As you may know, we have a policy in place that requires any Customer who cannot be safely, comfortably, and completely accommodated in one seat with both armrests in the down position to purchase the number of seats occupied. We require and expect our Ground Operations personnel and Flight Attendants to ensure that everyone onboard our flights has adequate seating space.
Admittedly and humbly, our Employees should have recognized the seating needs of this Customer of size before boarding began. Additionally, had our Flight Attendants noticed the seating problem prior to takeoff, they should have contacted station personnel to make arrangements to allow this Customer of size to occupy two seats. If the flight is completely full, then our Employees should either solicit for a volunteer to take a later flight with compensation or offer to accommodate the Customer of size so they can occupy the necessary seat(s). We regret that this situation was not addressed and handled appropriately before takeoff.
As a gesture of goodwill for your inconvenience, we have refunded your one-way ticket to the original form of payment used. Please allow one to two billing cycles for the credit to post. I am hopeful that you will accept this gesture in the spirit intended.
Again, we appreciate your taking time out of your day to let us know about your recent experience. We hope that you will not allow this rare occurrence to forever deter you from flying with us in the future as we would LUV the opportunity to serve you again and show you our strong commitment to our Customers.
      Sincerely,
      Jessica, Southwest Airlines

Looking at the fact that the brother/sister combo bought tickets with a seat in between them tells you they knew they were too big to fit comfortably in that space and hoped they would either squeeze a smaller person in between them or hope no one bought that seat. I agree. They purposely booked the window and aisle seats because those give you the most leg room, etc., and that's why they didn't want to switch with her.this In fact this lady said she always tries to book aisle seat so the brother/sister booked first, and then this lady booked after them. I completely agree...they were hoping no one would book that middle seat. Anyway, I wouldn't have handled it lime she did. She should have taken a f!ight attendant aside during the flight (not after) privately and see what they can do. Maybe they had empty business class seats that they could have moved her to? I think where she went wrong was broadcasting this situation publicly and thus possibly shaming the other two passengers. Should have handled this privately, during the flight, IMO.

One day the driver had it fully booked and discovered that all the 8 passengers were not able to depart together because they simply couldn't fit inside! Those were all american tourists, obese to an extreme. The cheif of the reception team advised to take into consideration the size of the passenger, and maybe stop at 6, not 8.

I did buy two tickets on a few occasions or flew first class. I usually had legroom problems rather than side to side issues. The airlines are always trying to squeeze a few more seats onboard so they are complicit in this too. Love Sydney's content!

Yep! Planes used to have 55 inches seat space when commercial flights started becoming a thing (1940's - 50's). Now, the seats are made with 35 inches of space. That's from outside arm rest to outside arm rest, and no space between the neighboring seat. So take out 5 inches for the arm rests and you have 30 inches of seat space to sit in, and you'd better hope your neighbor doesn't like resting their elbows on the arm rest, because there's not going to be any room for you.

My husband and I went on a flight recently and due to his size, we purchased an extra seat for him. We were on a small plane with only two seats on each side of the aisle so my seat was supposed to be in the row across from him. I was informed when I got on the plane my seat needed to be changed. Ok, no big deal, I'm just happy to be going on vacation. Until I got to my new seat assignment which was next to a larger man. I had to spend the entire flight leaning into the aisle so his body would not be touching mine. Like you, I am not ok with a stranger touching my body, nor should I be made to feel like I should be ok with it because the person touching me is a larger person. Not to mention the girl behind me that was bouncing her head off the back of my seat the entire time while she slept (my husband was in the row behind her and told me later what happened when I told him I didn't know what the hell the person behind me was doing) and the man sitting across the aisle from me that was noisily bouncing his leg the entire time. It was the worst flight I've ever experienced. If you're an obese person you know it and are well aware of the fact you will not fit in an airplane seat and should be made to purchase two seats. If you cannot afford it, then you shouldn't be flying. Sorry, not sorry.
My husband had bariatric surgery and has lost 160 lbs and hopefully will only need one seat the next time we fly but if not we will again purchase two seats for him. Because no one should be made uncomfortable for the choices he has made to overfeed his body.

Omg. Delta treated me amazingly (I commented this on another thread but whatever - I can repeat so you can show your son).
I was flying solo parent in 2018 with three kids (my husband had a work conflict and couldn’t join us). 4 hour flight and my kids had never flown. It was a wildcard experience. So what did I do? I PREPARED! Lol. Anyway. My kids were 3, 8, 11. I absolutely had to sit with them. So I planned. A) chose an airline that had reserved seating. B) called ahead to arrange seating together - got placed in back row of a 2+2 configured plane - I hate back row but whatever. It was the only unreserved set of 4 seats available AND the kids would be able to get to bathrooms immediately. (Smart on Delta there.) C) I had to tow the car seat along (full size, not infant size). I couldn’t counter check it (their policy) so I had to gate check it. Fine. Whatever.
I also took the initiative to tell pretty much every staff member (gate team and flight attendants) that this was my kids first flight and I’m flying solo with them and I’d love any accommodation I could get. Basically: can y’all just proactively check on me please? I don’t know if they’re gonna be monsters or crying or vomiting (car sickness is strong in my bloodline 😜). I didn’t want to be a disturbance but I’m really out of my element and had no other travel option I could afford to get me there.
Delta staff was so great. I brought little baggies of Hershey kisses to give to everyone. (Gate and flight staff and passengers seated near us.) The flight staff was so kind and attentive. We ended up needing nothing. My kids tolerated it all like champs and their manners were on point. Really awesome. The flight staff gave them little care packs (couple extra snacks and little kids flight wings and a hand wipe and such). In the packs the staff had written little thank you notes for the chocolates and told the kids how good they were on the flight and how they hoped to see them flying lots in the future. Generic stuff but it was sooooo sweet. I still have them somewhere I hope.
Bonus prize (for your son): we brought candy for the pilots, too, but obviously couldn’t give them pre-flight so flight attendants held them. We were deplaning and the pilots flagged my kids down, thanked them for the chocolate, and then invited them into cockpit. They were THRILLED! (Also thanks to the cleaning staff on that flight - we were last off and took a few minutes to finally clear off - sorry to be any bother.)
The return flight was pretty much the same except I told everyone it was second flight. 🤷‍♀️ No cockpit time in that run (they were doing a quick turnaround). The staff was still amazing and attentive. We did have a little vomiting on that flight (still back row on a 2+2 configuration). The attendant offered a comp drink but I declined (though I think that was a missed opportunity now Haha).
Anyhoo- go go Delta. Excellent at accommodating us. But then again we also pre-planned. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe more of us should. 😏

It only really dawned on me at that time how much of a massive inconvenience i was to others when flying, i felt terrible. A lifelong friend i flew with jokingly flagged to me i'd essentially spent a 12-hour flight pressed up against him. That stuck with me.

I fly quite often for my profession (Ship's Engineering Officer) and I remember a recent flight that happened not to long ago. It was a flight that was between Houston, TX and Flint, MI. The flight was completely booked up and I found myself with the extremely bad luck of being stuck in the (sometimes dreaded, lol) middle seat. Now I'm not a tiny guy, but I'm also not a obese guy either. I just have broad shoulders. But anyways I digress, I found myself stuck between to HUGE DUDES, I mean they made me feel tiny. I had to endure that flight for about 3 hours with my shoulders and back contorted sideways. When I finally did get home, I didn't feel anything but tiredness from the flight. But OH MY LORD, did I feel it the next morning. I couldn't move my neck or head at all without feeling an extreme amount of debilitating pain. It took me 2 months before I felt normal again and even now 2 years later, I still have nerve issues. I mean I normally try to upgrade up to business class and when I can't do that I at least try for an isle seat. But that time I couldn't. This was American Airlines, by the way. People laugh about this, I DO NOT find this funny because this caused me an extreme amount of pain and I lost out on a serious amount of income because I was not able to work. Thanks American Airline. And thanks Sydney for telling us about that rule, I will be using that in the future.

Doubling up the encroachment shows that they really have no empathy for others, they either did not think about it, or they thought about it and didn't care.
I'm guessing they latter. I'd lay odds that they've done this before, and of course with that seating situation, if the flight was not completely full the middle seat person would move and they'd get an extra seat for free, which is probably what they expected.

The fellow in the middle got some attention of the flight attendant and got the fellow in the aisle seat moved which I was grateful for not because I was going to be squished but because the smell was horrific and I wanted to eat on the flight. That said I did wonder if they moved them to the exit row which given he struggled to get into the aisle seat to begin with, I’m not sure how he’s getting through these increasingly tightly packed seats to the exit. Good on you and this shows the difference in attitude and self awareness between you and this brother and sister - I also want to encourage you with your weight loss efforts - it may be difficult or feel impossible but don't give up! It is for YOUR health more than anything else! I highly recommend a book titled Body For Life - while I grew up skinny and never had any issues with being fat - I did gain about 40+ lbs. in my mid-thirties - it finally got to me when I was looking at gaining 5 inches in my waist - inch by inch over a few short years - this book made sense and even though I didn't follow it as strictly as the author proscribed, it worked - and I got in even better shape than I was previously. The premise and basic talking points are: 1. This is not a "diet" - this is a lifestyle change in (a) what foods you can and cannot eat, exercise alone won't cause you to lose weight, it can help to some degree but it really is a change to your diet that will cause you to lose weight. 2. Exercise will help with your body shape - resistance training will help gain muscle and tone, and cardio will help with your overall energy. 3. Once a week you get a "free" day - any diet that tells you that you can never eat a hot fudge sundae or a double bacon cheeseburger is doomed to lead you to failure because - sooner or later you're gonna fall, and then you'll be discouraged and give up. But going from eating 2 bowls of Lucky Charms and 2 slices of heavily buttered toast 7 days a week to 1 day and week made a huge difference for me! 4. In the event you slip up on a day that isn't your free day - pick yourself up and get back on the program - never give up! 5. You won't notice it at first - and I only weighed myself once a week - but people around you will notice and compliment you and this will be encouraging and inspirational - and it will cause you to be encouraging to others for anything positive you notice about them. Congrats to being 25 lbs down! Cheering you on!

I had to fly a 100% full Japanese airline when I was overweight (but not to the point of needing extender seatbelts) due to a medical condition & those seats are abnormally smaller than American planes, plus the space between the seats is as well, so I couldn’t get my feet on the ground because my legs were too long for the space, then the guy in the aisle kept slamming the armrest down on my hipbone until I was crying. I asked a flight attendant if I could change seats or if there was anything They could do to help, the mean guy wouldn’t switch & give me the aisle so I could at least sit sort in it with my knees hanging over & didn’t care that he was inflicting pain on me no matter how many times I asked him to stop because he was hurting me. Even though he was being horribly cruel & tbh abusive I was still apologetic & kind to him. After the guy in front of me kept trying to jam his seat back on my knees that couldn’t go down even though I also explained that & kindly asked him to stop, the guy is the window crammed himself as close to the window as possible & moved his feet over & offered me to try to move my feet over & to get as close as possible him so I could stop getting abused by armrest guy. He then apologized for everyone else’s behavior & tried to make me laugh & keep me distracted the rest of the flight. So I really gotta say...People like you are saints.

He kindly gave me coffee shop gift card and tried very hard not to get too much into my space. We actually had a pleasant conversation for most of the flight, taking my mind off the uncomfortable seat issue. Thankfully it was only an hour and a half flight. Ultimately, I think the airlines need to have larger seats, and charge more for them. Ben, my seatmate was very kind and I appreciated his gesture.

I'm a skinnier guy, and I just like the extra space. Often someone asks me to swap seats or someone will sit in the vacated spot. I always politely explain that I purchased that seat, and grown adults have such a problem with that it's mind boggling. I'm very aware that some people can't afford to do the same, trust me, I get it. It's weird and I'm weird, but it's my money and my seat, and I shouldn't have to explain my reasoning to anyone. I used to get guilted into it, but the more I tell people about it, the more I see others doing the same. I don't go into the other seat but it's still a tight fit. Former 400 lb woman here. I am now less than half of my former self! I totally get it Sydney. Having been that obese person, I always opted for business class so I could fit there without bothering others. If for some reason, I HAD to fly regular, I got the aisle seat, brought a seatbelt extender with me, and hung my hip/leg on the aisle outside so that my side next to someone didn't squish them. Yes, I had issues with the little cart and people walking by but I never assumed it was their problem. It was MY problem. So I 99% of the time paid for the larger seat.
Most of these fat queens are younger women who haven't stopped to think about their inconvenience to others. Nor do they think about what will happen when they get older. I hate to think what I would be like if today at 67 I were still 400 pounds.

I am a very large person, not obese, but very large framed at 6'7" and north of 350 lbs. I also don't fit in airplane seats and would have gone out of my way to not impose too much on the neighboring seat(s). Accepting people as they are comes with the accepted person recognizing their impact on the people around them and, in this case, doing what is possible to alleviate the situation. As you said, I usually am asked to move to help make everyone comfortable or I try to purchase the second seat to make everyone comfortable. Normal sized people don't fit well in airplane seats today. Why make it worse. The airline should have upgraded you or moved you, if space was available.

    • @angrytedtalks

6'7" and over 350lbs is by definition clinically obese.
Your BMI is over 35.1; over 30 is obese.
You should check your body fat percentage. Over 25% is obese for a man.
True that height is a problem for standard airplane seats, but the fuel to carry you is twice the cost of an average person, so perhaps double size seats should be made available on airlines for larger passengers, at higher cost, of course.

That’s what gets me here. We don’t let people on to rollercoasters at all if they don’t fit the dimensions. Can you imagine the discomfort/embarrassment of trying to get the cart past the aisle-sitting passenger? (I’m not a flight attendant so I don’t really know if it’s a thing.) Would they have complained of you hit/touched them with it? What if you accidentally injured them? (Going by, turbulence jerks y’all around, and they get a bruise or something from the cart.)
I’m not even worried about why they’re so large - doesn’t matter to me, really. Being a huge framed muscular person, eating themselves fat or having a medical condition - doesn’t matter. The result is what it is on a plane. If the person doesn’t buy the extra seat, why don’t they get bumped to the next flight that can accommodate them? They should have planned for the space needed for themselves. They’re big and fabulous. They deserve to treat themselves to that extra seat.

They do have self awareness, that's why when checking in to their flight, knowing how large they are and how they 'encroach' on the seat next to them (we know they know this since they're siblings so this didn't just happen by chance), they chose seats separated when most family members would chose adjacent seats. They did this specifically so the person that will be forced to be uncomfortable will not be either of them.
