    UPDATE: I did change the bottom strap (under the spring) that holds the bottom plate on to 1/4 steel. For those that don't believe this works, I have tow heavy loads (10,000 or more) more then 12 times with no problems. If you would like to see a before and after photo with "About" 15,000 pounds (I know how my trailer sits with that much weight) look here

      Depends on what exactly it is and what part exactly your welding, in this case adding those triangle pieces was overkill, the 1/4 plate won’t flex , I know, I used 3/16 plating to make mine. So it is one of the best times to do it yourself when your welding on something that just for piece of mind and not really needed. It’s all bolted on, it’s not falling off the truck. At worst the triangle support pieces would fall off, but I’m pretty sure if anyone did that poor of a job they could see it wasn’t going to work. I know the top flange has to stick out so far it looks like it might be weak, but the top of those air springs are flat on top and you they basically stiffen the plate once they are bolted on tight.

    Definitely would bolt into the side of the top bracket / frame also. It will eventually twist out. Is the bottom of the bag even sitting all the way on the lower mount and bolted to it? Weld a piece of metal on the bottom of it in between the 2 leaf spring u-bolts as a spacer so it doesn't bow in either. Keep practicing man, it's fun to make your own stuff!

    Something to think about. I have air bags on my van for heavy loads and run 1/2 ton springs for comfort. Thus I like to change the pressure in my bags all the time. So I have an on board air compressor. I have the air bags plumbed in to valves and a pressure regulator with a gauge for each side. If the load is uneven I run higher pressure in that side. The gauges tell me the pressure in each bag and the valves isolate the bags from the compressor side since any system leaks seem to show up from that side. Works pretty good. I have all that mounted to the side of the seat. I open the door to get in and can instantly see the pressures in both bags. I can also alter them in just a few seconds. Turn the knob on the pressure regulator to set the new pressure. Just that easy. Of course I also use the air for airing up tires after a run on the beach or off road trail.

    Nice job designing and fabricating . I've seen 3 vehicles , over the last 7 years with the same system that ended up with twisted frame rails and broken cross members . You can't take the weight off the springs and transfer it to the top of the frame rails without bending them . That's why Timbrens are designed to mount directly under the frame rail. Two more leaves on each side , of .499 steal will carry the load and won't damage the frame . Sorry , I don't mean to sound like " That Guy". Especially after the sweet job you did mounting it .

Then the way life took me I ended up doing refrigeration ( have been for 25 + years ) I challenge you to buy a good quality leak detector solution and use side by side. If you have a big leak dawn works fine but for small or micro leaks sometimes it will not work so good. They put stuff in it so it will stick. I have used it and don't see anything come back in 20 - 30 minutes and see bubbles.

    I know the video is older. Maybe you will still see the comment. First , those bags you used are almost identical to the loadlifter 5000 bags , except they are good for at least 5000 lbs each. That is an air spring for a drop axle on a commercial vehicle most likely. They look very similar to the ones I used, and that’s what they were meant for. I mentioned that part just in case you didn’t know. I don’t know if the loadlifter bags are single or two ply, but the ones you have should be 2 ply, if you clean them up and spray a little of your favorite rubber protectant on them every now and then they will last a really long time.
    Second, if you do still notice the comments here, I see you installed your in a plum fashion, like straight up and down instead of with an angle like the shocks have. When you showed them right when you had them attached you could see how the bag was extended more on the bag side than on the front. This situation causes me slight concern on my installation, I did pretty much what you did almost exactly really, but I have only installed and tested them. They are on a pickup truck I’m redoing and they are one of the last things I needed to do before starting to use the truck as my everyday vehicle. I’m wondering if putting a slight lean in them sort of like the shocks are , but not that extreme, just enough to take out that condition where the back is slightly more extended would be better. I hate to tear it all back down and change it if I don’t need to. Possibly you will be able to tell me how yours held up installed like that? If you can comment on that it would be much appreciated. Awesome job by the way, it’s amazing we both came up with about the exact same design for installing those air springs. Maybe there isn’t many install options on them , I’m not really sure.

      I have been very happy with them. They work great. I only had to replace one of them, and that was my fault. I had an inside tire go flat, and it rubbed on it. I made a review video if you would like to see it ( th-cam.com/video/b3y2QQu2ioA/w-d-xo.html ). I also added an onboard air compressor. I like the fact that I can go someplace with no load, and when I need it, I can add more air. I made a video of the air compressor if you would like to see th-cam.com/video/z_WxCUVAwSk/w-d-xo.html .

    I did this about 6-7 years ago found a used kit firestone used $65 at a swap meet....I used heavy aluminum angel it on from a computer rack tower.... the feet were 3/8th or 1/2 inch.....welded a bracket to the top of the ubolt to hold the bottom....your air bags look wider (diameter) and this is on a Dakota.......first a 94.....now a 2000....finally got them hooked up ot a air pump and controls in cab.....people are surprised how well they work........but the one thing I would recommend it to keep the have separate ......for one thing.....in the lean corning the outside bag is compressed thus transferring the extra pressure thus pushing up the opposite side....
    next time you go to weld try vertical down and just move left and right you will be surprised.....horizontal (flat) is a little tricky....me too self taught...
    key word in wire welding is bacon frying sound....
    have a good one enjoyed your video....will subb...and travel

      Don Powers if you are a self taught welder that is fine. If you are running an outer shield wire vertical down is ok, if you are using an inner shield or stick welding go up. You don't want your slag to get in your weld, that will cause porosity ( I may of spelled that wrong ) thus making a weak weld. The outer shield ( gas shield ) won't give you this problem. There are some rods you can run vertical down, but I'm guessing if you are self taught you are just doing some basic welding and that's all good. Look around here on you tube there are a few guys that give very informative videos on all types of welding. The best thing is practice, no better teacher than experience.

      Bob Taylor I chassised a 1969 road runner back in 84 but your tip on vertical up makes perfect sense...I built a 70 x60 what looks like a fat L canopy for I guy and took a direct.hit from a hurricane. I wall ..its 16-18 ft high built trusses out of the "C"s that thin stuff is interesting ....
      zero damage on the canopy....
      but vertical up with welding rods explains a lot when you mentioned the slang...running back into the weld....I like welding always over build...got to make it people proof...I appreciate your comment...thanks Don

    Just a plumbing tip better to not make compression fittings to tight by snugging them up
    apply H20 or air pressure
    then if leaking slowly tighten until leak stops

    did you link the airbags together? and install a relief valve? I wonder if they put something in the airbags to suck up moisture?

    • @Glennfix
      @Glennfix  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not link the air bags together. The reason is sometimes I carry uneven loads so I wanted to be able to add different pressures in them. I have not tried them teed together be I have herd that when you go around corners the air will move from one bag to the other.

    can you use air bags to lift a truck for higher stance alone (empty bed)or is made to lift with a load pressure only by lifting a loaded bed back to stock height.. sorry for dumb question ...

    • @Glennfix
      @Glennfix  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can but if you put a lot of air (higher lift) in it it will give you a hard ride.

  • @zackthomas5707
    @zackthomas5707 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your truck a 3/4 ton? I have a 1/2 ton chevy I'm trying to bag front and back without spending a grand or more. What pressure are you normally running with empty bed and hows the ride quality? My truck came with a 6" lift from the factory and the ride has been harsh from day 1. Never towed alot, just occasional 8' trailer with a four wheeler or fridge. Now its spongy due to worn out components that I'm getting ready to replace and hopefully upgrade throughout this process.

    • @Glennfix
      @Glennfix  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I run 30-40 pounds in the bags it gives me a soft ride, just firmer. If I have a lot of weight I can get the same ride with more pressure.

    I just saw your video. It appears to me your bracket on top of the air bag is braced in the wrong direction. Can I correctly assume you had to weld it to your blue ox bracket for proper support?

    • @Glennfix
      @Glennfix  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I bolted it to the blue ox. I made it wide enough so the air bags will never hit. There is not room to mount it any other way. The blue ox bracket sticks out from the frame so it is snug against the blue ox.

    If you ever need to put 90psi in air bags...you need a bigger truck.
    You understand they are to share the weight with the springs, not carry it all yes?

    What is the best setting for airbag suspension longevity ? I heard Hight high setting is gonna make it last longer ? Is that true ?

    • @Glennfix
      @Glennfix  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don'y think the pressure has any thing to do with how long they last. You never want to drive with them empty. The more weight the more pressure is needed to make the truck ride right. If you don't have a lot of weight and put a lot of pressure in them you will get a very hard ride. The idea is to adjust the pressure so the truck rides good with the amount of weight in it.

    hello
    I plan to install this system on my cherokee, to pull heavy loads without losing ground clearance.
    can you tell me if you are satisfied with it in the long run, and if with the recoil you would have installed it differently.
    sorry if you explained it in the video but I don't speak english, I use a translator.
    cordially.

      I am very happy with them. They have been on my truck for over 2 years. I just added a compressor so I can adjust the air any time. You can see the video at th-cam.com/video/z_WxCUVAwSk/w-d-xo.html If I put a lot of air with no weight It will be a hard ride. If you get the air right it will give a real smooth ride.

      It depends, If the rough ride is because the truck is sitting too low, yes. If you want a ride like the air ride on a BMW no. But you can adjust the air and make the ride firmer or softer.
