When it comes to survival at sea, there is nothing more important or comforting than being properly prepared. Understanding the dangers that can overcome you and your vessel while at sea is crucial part of surviving.
On the otherhand, you need to carry out drills so you can react quickly and without thinking in an emergency situation.

Does an O’ Oscar flag really need hoisted in most areas with today’s technology? It’s good for the crew to know in case it’s needed, but I just don’t see it as being necessary PLUS that person can better be used in other positions to help.

Definitely not done by a 'woke' crew....Person overboard, get permission to assist the person (who may be unquestionably able bodied) to reboard, but may need some emotionally supportive physical help, may give permission if not excessively trigger to have a nonthreatening person (preferably non-binary, non white evil cis-male, lgtb2qS etc)for assistance.
If that sounded stupid welcome to north america.
