If we will examine the history, the name "Roman Catholic Church" was given by the enemy of the Catholic Church. We are not the ones who popularized that name, but it was the protestants who apostatized the Catholic Church. It is a derogatory, pejorative or hostile name that protestants used to call us Catholics. And it's not only that, there are other names that protestants used to mock or belittle Catholics such as "Romish", "Romanist", "Popish", "Papist", and "Popery". Those were originating from protestants.

The naming of the term "Roman Catholic" started only when the Anglican Church sect was founded by King Henry VIII on the 16th century. King Henry VIII was a former Catholic King of England who wanted to divorce his wife, but the pope did not allow him. Because divorce is not allowed in the Catholic Church. This made the king to denounce his Catholic faith and founded his own sect called "Anglican Church". This sect is also claiming to be Catholic. That is why they taught the teachings of "Branch Theory". According to them, the whole Catholic Church consists of 3 groups: namely Anglican Church, Greek Church and Roman Church. Thus, when they mentioned Catholics who are obedient to the Pope in Vatican, they would attached the word "Roman" to the "Catholic".

Because of the power of King Henry VIII, he imposed a law that prohibit Catholics the usage of the name "Catholic Church" as the name of their religion. That law had spread throughout the countries that were controlled by the kingdom. It entails grave punishment if someone disobeyed that law. Hence, Catholics were forced to use the term "Roman Catholic" on those countries that prohibits the usage of the name "Catholic Church". Most of Catholics who lived in Protestant countries such as in USA, had generally accepted the term "Roman Catholic" than those unpleasant names like "Romish Catholic" or "Popish Catholic".

In fact, in Sweden which is a Protestant country, it is still prohibited there to use the term "Catholic Church" if you are a Catholic. You must use only the name "Roman Catholic Church". It means here that the "Catholic Church" and "Roman Catholic Church" are both referring only to one religion. We were only forced to use the term "Roman Catholic Church" because of the law that prohibited us to use the name "Catholic Church". That is why, if you read the Wikipedia and even the Dictionary or Encyclopedia, you will notice that the term "Catholic Church" and "Roman Catholic Church" are synonymous. Both of them referred only to one religion which is lead by the Pope in Vatican. We will try to read Wikipedia, and it says there:

"The Catholic Church sometimes referred to as the Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian Church with 1.3 billion baptized Catholics worldwide as of 2018."

And if you look at Webster's Dictionary it also says there that:
"Catholic Church, the Roman Catholic Church".

Therefore, Catholic Church and Roman Catholic Church refers only to one religion and is used interchangeably. In only depends on who is the one speaking. If the speaker is a Protestant or if you are living in an anti-Catholic country, you must use the name "Roman Catholic Church". But if you are a Catholic and you are living in a non anti-Catholic country, you can use the name "Catholic Church" without hesitation.

Therefore, it is clear that we did not give the name "Roman Catholic Church", but it was given by those who opposed the Catholic Church. But why it is okay for us to be called "Roman Catholic", if it is not the official name of the Church?

It is okay for us to be called "Roman Catholic" because we are part of the Roman or Latin Rite. The whole Catholic Church consists of 24 local churches. These 24 churches are Ukrainian Catholic, Russian Catholic, Ethiopian Catholic, Syriac Catholic, Armenian Catholic, Maronite Catholic, Coptic Catholic and several local churches that are part of the worldwide Catholic Church. We, Filipinos are part of the Roman Catholic since we are using the Roman Missal in our liturgy of the Eucharist. Hence, it is acceptable if we will be called based on which local church we belong to, such as Coptic Catholic, Russian Catholic, Ukrainian Catholic, Syriac Catholic, then we are called Roman Catholic.

But if we are talking about the Religion per se, we are not "Roman Catholic Church" but "Catholic Church". Because the whole Catholic Church consists of 24 local churches. The name of our religion is not the name of our local church, but the whole Church worldwide. Thus, if you will be asked on what your religion is, our answer is "Catholic Church". It is also not appropriate to call "Roman Catholic" those brethren in the Eastern Catholic Rites such as the Ukrainian Catholic, Russian Catholic at several others. Their religion is also "Catholic Church".

The first use of the term "Catholic Church" (literally meaning "universal church") was by the church father Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 50-140) in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (circa 110 AD).

They thus coined the term "Roman Catholic" to distinguish those in union with Rome from themselves.
