- JPMorgan Chase CEO goes Viral over Work-life Balance Comment | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has sparked controversy with his comments on work-life balance. An old video is making the rounds again, suggesting it's an individual's responsibility to manage the work-life balance, not the companies. Dimon's remarks have ignited a broader debate on who should bear the responsibility for achieving work-life balance. Who is responsible for work-life balance? Should work-life balance be a shared responsibility?

It’s like the chicken farm owner telling the chickens ‘you decide your life quality’.
Hahahha ur right that was good. It's all bullshit when he sits in his mansion and never had to work hard becuase his racist daddy inherited company.
Only you could leave any time you want but the chicken can't.
If the chicken applied to be on the farm and chose to be there in exchange for compensation from the farmer.
So there are 209 people here who don’t know what a job is🤦🏽♀️
Can we? Really?@@4120306
I used to work for Jamie Dimon and his "let them eat cake" attitude was very apparent in the Bank's toxic work environment. Always demanding more, always insisting "above and beyond" while wages stayed stagnant. Always cutting benefits and acting like they're helping you. They keep beating the "times are hard" drum and everyone needs to make sacrifices, as long as it's not them. Yes it was my job to take care of myself, so I quit. Because nobody on their deathbed wishes they did more for their boss.
Well said ❤
What s fucking asshole your boss should have been 🤷🏼♂️. Not at all genuine.,😔
U should have left such a company and found a better one giving u a better worklife balance.
I worked for the rival bank. During the GFC, They cut the staff. Thinking those who were left are grateful they still have a job. And when bailouts came, collected their bonuses and savings from having less staff with same work load

So that's why, Don't love your company, Love your Job because you never know when your company stops loving you!!

Exactly 👍🏻
Ruthlessly use your skills to get the max that you can get from your company....because that is EXACTLY what the company is doing to you.
If you have the skills you can demand better pay/conditions or else tell them to fuck off...and you move on.
ZERO involvement in a company other than the skills for which you are hired.
The problem is that most people live WAY beyond their means but taking enormous loans to maintain an EMI filled "show off" lifestyle and therefore have very little wriggle room to negotiate with their company on a somewhat equal footing.
Most will have to suck it up for at least 10 odd years.....but the ones who go minimalist during the 10 year period will have way better savings/investments and consequently fuck you money.
That's when a savvy employee has an upper hand when it comes to negotiating a good deal with the company for good work life balance.
10/12 years of solid hands-on experience and you will be in demand.....and then the company needs you more.

Lol. Your life is your responsibility. He’s right
Jamie Dimon was born into wealth and privilege as his father and grandfather were stockbrokers and bankers in New York City. Dimon was appointed to a CFO position at age 30. He apparently did not spend much time working his way up and really can’t identify with a “regular” work experience.
Facts. He unfairly bypassed everybody using his connections, gets into management young because of it, and then lectures everybody doing a ton of busy work for 11 hours a day so they dont get fired! Load of bs.
Not only that but he totally missed the financial crisis in 2008. The captain of a sinking ship who went on a lifeboat with other senior officers and then leaving the passengers and rest of the crew to themselves.
Thank you for bringing the truth.

They really be sittin up there theorizing about a human beings work/life balance. I cannot believe this. I'm blessed to be a disabled vet but that's why I picked the air force bc I knew would be worked hard but I'd also earn time off every month and be taken care of. If you just take care your people they will go miles for you but private industry don't man. Hard realization when I became a civilian that they don't care at all really. Resigned twice since 2014 bc of jobs hurting my mental health. For what it's worth don't forget the power in be able to quit a job tho. The military made very grateful for that freedom of choice, being stuck in a job through contract is not the way
If you work for JP Morgan. You will realise it is not possible to have a work life balance. Because the work load is so high. It is impossible to log off on time. Your manager will expect you to complete your work on time even if the volumes are high. They are always understaffed because most of the managers want to show efficiency by reducing employees that's the main problem and even if you want to hire an employee to replace another who had left the team. the approval to get a new employee could take minimum 4 Months and the manager will have to give justification why they need a new employee. Most managers wouldn't want to go through this hassle so they try not to get a new employee. Jamie should try to sort this problem rather than blaming the employees for not having a work life balance.
Worst part is your manager will question you why are you updating overtime. I cannot approve it. So they try not to show overtime at all. They never used to pay for overtime. Now they tell the employees not to update the exact overtime. So that you don't have to pay them.

@@StephenCreagh-jm9ug It was, in the end, the government's decision to engineer a bailout for the major banks, so the banks took the best that they can. You cannot just blame the banks for everything; you also have to blame the government. Did you know that banking is one of the most regulated industries, even before 2008?
As for your question, yes, it did help the wealthy people immensely, but it also saved the money of millions of Americans that had deposited in their banks. Also remember that most people cannot buy a house and a car without the banks; most startups wouldn't exist without the banks; most businesses (large or boutique), where you buy your favorite products from, cannot function efficiently without the banks. Collapsing of the banks would have led to a real economic depression.
In a free market capitalism, the banks would have been left to collapse, but the cronies, who wouldn't exist without all these government regulation, made sure that they got bailed out of this.
@@StephenCreagh-jm9ug you are correct that his wealthy friends stayed wealthy, but he wasn't the one who helped the most --- the government did. Correct, it is our job to take care of work-life balance. It is also our job to give the finger to companies like this one when they expect for work over 40hrs/week and to ignore work calls, texts and emails after work hours are over.
If the company wants employee flexibility outside of work hours... they need to give flexibility during work hours. It goes both ways. Or in words he'd understand: "It is your job to figure out how to get things done outside of normal work hours, not OUR job".

In the old days of colonialism, people were forced to work as slaves without any benefits (Master and Slave).
In today's modern world, with human rights and so on, this has transformed into employment with no work-life balance and low pay (Employer/Employee).
From ruling another land as a colony to calling it an overseas territory, it's the same old story, just under a different name.
The point is that certain exploitative practices from the past may have been rebranded but still persist in different forms today. The shift from overtly oppressive systems like slavery and colonialism to more subtle forms of exploitation in modern employment and geopolitical relationships suggests that while the terminology and outward appearances have changed, the underlying dynamics of power and inequality often remain.

Many vital infrastructure/tech jobs are definitely not fun to anyone... except maybe a personality type that constantly gets sneered at in media
One of the biggest reason for work life imbalance most employees experienced is contributed by managers and all managers' reporting leads back to the CEO. So that's a load s*** of bull when he says it's not his job. Employees are asked to do what should've been done by his manager. Employees are doing 2 person work because the other guy is leaving on time for happy hour with the boss. Employees are doing overtime because resources are limited during normal work hours. Employees are working on weekends because incompetent managers come up with work schedules on Friday, not Monday. Yeah, all these are the doings of employees eh Mr. Dimon?
He’s right. Work/Life balance is the person’s responsibility. However, after lockdown company’s demands and unpaid overtime have become so bad, it’s really difficult to have a life.

The very fact that he is saying this clearly demonstrates that the corporation cares more about themselves and doesn't give a damn about your life outside work. Otherwise, this would not be an issue worth addressing.
Right, it’s our responsibility. But then, when we deny working FORCED overtime, Management and the Company as a whole comes after your job! I work 12 to 14 hours a day, sleep 7 hours, and am left with 3 hours to commute back and forth, eat dinner, and shower.
I agree which is why I decided to work for a company that provides a 4 day work week. I spend Friday sat and Sunday with family and friends. I use my pto and personal day to rest and take my family on vacations. I use sick leave when I’m not feeling well. It’s your responsibility
Thanks
People push the issues they can not solve to the other side. It is natural.
And if you're really really good at it, you might just find a career in corporate leadership
Companies don't have to baby their employees, but they shouldn't overload them either. If someone's contract is for 40 hours a week, but their work takes 60 hours, there's no possibility of work-life balance.
Ever since my company started talking about work-life balance, we’re doing more with less manpower.
Most jobs keep requiring employees to do more work for the same pay, it's never enough, undermining their moral.
Instead of doing more, try doing something different that will create more output (income).
Accha, jamie. Throwing the plebs under the bus eh. Theek hai. Hum dekhenge.
When people reach high level in the corporate world, they get completely disconnected from the real world and reality of lower level employees. Work-life balance exists in European countries where there are laws limiting work hours. In USA, there is no limit. Your 40 hour week is not reinforced. It’s never 40 hours once you take a couple of steps up the ladder.
wrong, in EU is the same. No ine work 40 h, everyone have overtime, that not being paid.
I agree its my responsibility. I choose the environment i want to work in. I used to he so worried about my job in my toxic environment. I will never go back to living like that in my life.
He is talking as if he is JP Morgan, he don’t see one day he is going to be a retired old man sitting outside the JP Morgan.., we the workforce must just walk out globally for one week to see how everything will move.., Gen Z must make a movement and bring these corporate to account.
Outlook doesn't look that good. Gen z was gung-ho on taking the meds from a 64yo billionaire eugenicist.
The reality is, if you're in the kinds of jobs where you have Jamie Dimon in the management team above you, you're probably getting lots of perks to 'destress' and lots of benefits. So it comes down to how ambitious you are vs wanting 'balance' in your life now. You're competing with the other employees who are equal to you in ambition. So how ambitious are you right now? Well that is entirely up to you.
It's the workers at places that don't pay much and don't give any paid time off (or massages/pilates) that have little choice. They either work enough to pay the rent or become homeless.
The tech people in his company should all log off at 5 pm and turn off their phones, and then he'll see whether his employees can really control their work-life balance.
It’s also the banks job to pay their own bills instead of relying on government bailouts!
Who gave him the right or authority to give such advice!
Who gave you the right to comment here...
Right? Same for everyone.
He's very right. After all, he didn't say they are removing all the necessary support systems. On the contrary, he's asking each employee to take responsibility for their health, well-being family, friend and so on. That's a personal decision you can't leave to any employer to make for you.
The implications are disingenuous. Of course you are responsible for your choices, however, your company imposes a lot of choices on you and you can't just do as you please. They decide where you work, when you work there, who you work with, what you work on and this takes up the largest portion of your time. If that time is made miserable, there is little to nothing you can do in the remaining time to offset that. Hence the company has a big responsibility in this.
Companies love to say that we give you all the tools you need to have work life balance, but what they really give you is so much work that there can be no balance.
Well that's a company i don't want to work for. Working a 40-hour job 5 days a week. LIMITS you from doing things in your personal life. It is what it is. That's so sad he would say that
He is absolutely right. One has to take care of themselves. I have seen many employees not take any advantage of the benefits given by the company including but not limited to paid time off
Very often it is frowned upon to fully take advantage of it, that's why. When you violate those unwritten rules, they make you pay for it one way or the other. Of course, they will not say that was the reason but if you are a bit smart, you'll understand. Companies with unlimited PTO tend to have less people taking time off than a capped time off company. Of course, officially you can but you will be seen as not being a team player or some other nonsense like this. They will be harsher with you during performance reviews and you won't be considered for promotions. If there are layoffs, you will be first in line. Those can be some retaliations for fully using the benefits you are given.
Lol if the work volume is so high that you can't even take time aside for all these facilities
Brilliantly said .... Survival of the fittest.
I see, so if jobs don't pay livable wages. Then it's the workers fault.
I accept that comment if the companies should ensure that employees only work 8hours per day, 5 days per week with manageable workload and realistic deadlines. No unpaid work outside of working hours and employees cannot be forced to work outside of their working hours.
He’s right. Absolutely. It’s not their job to make sure I have work/life balance just like it’s not my job to make sure they earn profits.
That’s why I only give my job as much as they pay for - 40 hours/week and not a minute more. If I have a work problem, it is no longer a problem outside of work hours. It’s THEIR problem, not mine. They call that a “lack of ownership” at eval time. I think they lack ownership too.
I make sure my resume stays updated and my professional relationships stay strong.
If the companies not looking out for you, then you need to be your own advocate.
It's not about not working extra. The deliverables that you have itself are too high. It's 2 persons deliverables given to one person to save costs
It's true. They are working for their profits/bonus, so why can't you just work for your paycheck?
Regardless of your opinion towards him, everything about your life is on you. Organisations wont change to accommodate you, rather move to a different company. You have to be your own Hero
When Law does not help citizens, this is what happens. However bad Europe is, there are very strong labor laws, good medical benefits and primary education for everyone. But in US the likes of Jamie privatize profits in millions for themselves and socialize losses by laying workers off. They do not care because there is no provision in law. Why? Because lawmakers get money from such CEOs. This incentive structure is a problem.
It is a fight between people who don't have money but want money and people who have money but want time of someone else's life.
Useless discussion. No one forces anyone to join any private company or asks them to stick on.
Your logic in invalid due to reservations in Govt jobs not to mention bribery involved in getting the govt job.
This is as smart as saying that domestic abuse is a useless discussion because "no one forces anyone to get married". Indeed a very naive look at life.
@@Kevin-jc1fxPerfect analogy!
Then by that logic every country on earth should impose 100% tax on every company on earth. If they don't want to be taxed, then don't start any company 😂🤦♂️
I got my degree in Finance in 1994 and semi-retired last year; I have all I need and most of what I want. However, I do sometimes miss my business suits, comfy commute by train or luxury car, view of the expressway from the 45th floor, etc. of my first 20 years of work life. The last 8 to 10 years really have been a letdown: Christmas parties banned, speaking to pretty co-workers now as risky as playing football in a minefield, etc. I'll come back for 5 more years, 100% in office like its 2005 again, and replace the lazy slackers who won't come in. I'll do it for only $500K a year. I can start anytime..."
It’s your responsibility to balance work and life …
If you see that you can’t manage the pressure of your work find a job that best suits you .
And then live within your budget .
It's both. That schmuck grew up never taking responsibility. Glad I don't bank with Chase. As for the PTO stat, my previous employers never let people take their PTO.
I think he's correct 💯
He's super BASED
Absolutely agree with him.
We should be disciplined and push ourselves further instead of being a lazy wanker
Do you expect your employer to save ur soul?😂😂😂😂
If you a boss like that, leave that company now.
If there was mutual respect employers would stop trying to get as much work out of people for as little as possible, and then blaming the employees for everything.
it sounds harsh but it is true.
don't work more hours
work smartly
As an Indian, i agree with him. He didn't say anything wrong
WLB = What is stated in the appointment letter indicating daily working hours. The problem is when the mediocre managers use it against you.
He’s right, it is our responsibility. That’s why I only accept remote roles.
He's right, stop being a victim
If he's saying the employees responsibility to clock out at 5 and reject the unpaid overtime, I agree. But I feel like that's not what he's saying
I never believe that such work-life balance exists in the first place. I'd rather call it work-life integration.
I agree in many ways. If everyone agreed and stop letting these companies work us like slaves we can accomplish a balance. However when others are sitting there waiting for you to say no and get fired it’s difficult to make decisions to balance your life. Sometimes it comes down to keeping a roof over our heads or creating a balanced life.
Choose the work that you mostly love to do , something that you enjoy.
then this whole debate of work life balance evaporates
Only if we had option and no one is dependent on us
How about me saying "NO" to my boss when he/she wants me to work over the weekend citing an agreement of organization with client...?
Immediately my appraisal will be downgraded and the offer letter acceptance may be used as a tool to force me oblige to work during the weekend.
Then, how do I maintain work life balance?
Terrible take big companies looking out for each other. My friend just got fired because he was "asked" to go on a trip to Florida on Thursday for Friday. This is the majority of work environments.
Work-life balance is a work of the community. No one can do it alone.
Companies MUST create a healthy environment.
They are stupid because when you have a family-friendly environment you have more productivity. Period.
But, ultimately he is right!
People need to take matters in their own hands. Use your sick days, vacation. Take LOA whenever the law allows it. Exchange shifts with your coworkers wherever possible. Change your job if you don’t feel happy. Don’t be greedy. Create a budget at home and when you meet your expectations don’t seek more. Prioritize time with your family and kids. That’s it.
From my perspective, work-life balance is mostly related to individuals. If you really want to move higher and higher in your career and up the ladder quickly, you need to pay the price, which in this case is your personal life. If you want to maintain a work-life balance, then you should not expect quick career growth or rapid ascension up the ladder.
You might view other employees on your team as challengers, prompting you to work more hours to move faster than your colleagues.
It is up to individual choice. Some of us want to climb the career ladder quickly and are willing to sacrifice personal life for it. Others prefer to work only the stipulated hours and move slowly up the career ladder. I see both types of people in the company.
When the choice is yours, please don't blame the company.
Sadly many companies don't have merit as a criteria on whom to promote.
