- I always thought the faster you go, the tighter the yaw angle is (crosswind becomes more of a headwind) but that's not always the case. Also we discovered what happens when a car overtakes you, how far forwards on the saddle I sit, how a headwind is easier than a crosswind and if this has all given me something to think about in terms of pacing strategies.

Airspeed over the rider is lower when in a tailwind, as it's (bike speed-windspeed) vs (bike speed+windspeed), so the cross-wind effect is more impactful on the yaw during a tailwind. Bit like a wind sock that changes direction a lot in low wind vs pretty consistent in high winds
I tested out some trigonometry to answer the yaw angle conundrum and this is what I think is correct: Assuming you are riding at the same speed in both directions (one direction has a cross-headwind and the other direction has a cross-tailwind). In this case, the yaw angle is greater when riding in the cross-tailwind. But realistically when you ride with a tailwind, you go faster, to the point at which the airspeed relative to you is the same compared with riding in a headwind. So the two cancel out and the yaw angle works out exactly the same. The only remaining difference when riding with a tailwind is the proportion of other forms of resistance, such as tyre resistance and drivetrain efficiency. So if you factor this in, your speed relative to the wind would be slightly slower when riding in a tailwind, which means the cross-tail wind would result in a slightly increased yaw angle.
This is the conclusion I came to, just put much better 😂
This was considering the situation where the headwind speed was the same strength in both directions so you are absolutley right that the yaw angle would be the same. The other resistive factors that increase with bike speed just mean that you need to apply more power to overcome those, they obvioulsy don't affect yaw angle if you are maintaining that same headwind speed.

One of the biggest gains I recently came across was purchasing a Topeak digital air pressure gauge to measure my tire pressures. My hand pump gauge was reading up to 20 psi low. Also waxed my chain, switched to aero skewers (no levers) and Cyckit’s aero saddle bag.
Digital doesn't mean accurate and they lose calibration over time too
Same here with the topeak tyre gauge, my pump gauge was 20 psi out. I also wax my chain,clean and efficient.
I assume a beer belly has the same effect as an aero bladder?
I think the bladder sits higher than the belly, so you'd really need to grow breasts. So women have an aero advantage over men?
Real world experience of someone I passed on a bike ride who when we stopped at the traffic lights had a bit of a pot belly - thought this isn't going to be problem keeping ahead, but the guy was grease-fricking lightening, helped he was on a Giant Propel and had deep rim carbon wheels, even so, 40kph for 10 kilometres was still going some into a slight headwind. I was so glad when he had to turn off, so I could finally relax. But for some reason I was convinced his pot belly gave him a slight aero advantage, the pear shape has to be better for channeling the air around the rider and bike.
That’s incredibly interesting stuff. The applications to bike fit, pedalling technique and hydration is probably worth more than anything. Especially over longer distances or when you still have a long run to do after the bike leg. 😎

Biggest reason disc brake bikes are faster(beyond the wheels) is that the UCI changed their rules on tube shapes and nobody is going to design a modern rim brake TT bike to those new limitations. The Cervelo P5 is still faster than a lot of new bikes though. But they're the exception to the rule. The replacement to the P5 disc is going to be absurdly fast as the present bike is still close to the fastest on the market and not built to those newer tube restrictions.
That downwind yaw angle reduces due to apparent wind angle. As you go faster downwind the angle changes until it’s a 4 degree headwind. Sailing stuff.

Every day is a learning day. Look how long it took to get the mentality away from 23mm tyres on normal roads. And everyone used to ride 53/39 chain sets with small cassettes. Embedded ignorance is the hardest to exorcise to exercise.
I run a 23mm Conti on the front of my Roval CLX 60 Rapide road bike because appears to fit the rim better aero-wise from the front than say a 25mm. It’s also a bit lighter and works great for me. I do run a 25mm on the back.
Well, I used to ride 52/42 chainset. (That just means I'm probably older than you.) 😂

i could very well be wrong 11:18 but i think the angle is smaller at higher speed because if you think of the speeds as a triangle, the long side is your speed, the side at a right angle to that is the 'amount of side wind', and then the angle between the hypotenuse and the long 'your speed' line is the yaw angle. so as you increase your speed, since the crosswind doesnt increase, that means your hypotenuse will get longer and angle will be shorter. Basically because you're only increasing one side of the triangle so it forces the angle to go down... i think lol
Your trigonometry is correct but the qualification that is needed here is the "long speed", as you referred to it, is the headwind speed not the bike speed! So you can be travelling a lot faster with a tailwind and the yaw angle will be the same as a slower bike speed into the opposite angle of wind (i.e. same amount of side wind).

There is so much to be pessimistic about; I generally refuse to be negative about a hobby (bicycling) that I pursue for fun and improved health. That said, calling the bums out and fighting back would "get people talking" and improve your income -- disagreements are good for clicks.

Air speed is all about vectors. Increase your ground speed and the vector in your direction is increased. Eventually it wipes out the side wind vector.
The wind is also a vector, it has head/tail-wind component as well as that side-wind component. So when you switch directions the sidewind component remains the same but the headwind component reverses, meaning you will have completely different bike speeds for the same yaw angle.
Not testing one of those 'balaclavas'?

Downwind your ground speed will be higher (for any given airspeed) than upwind, so perhaps your riding style will in some way produce a more consistent yaw angle? (Gyroscopic stability, cadence-related resonance etc).
