  • In this video you will see my kitchen remodel process or kitchen remodel steps. I used a contractor for a good part of this. A lot of the detail work I did myself plus other things like relocating the gas line. What I want you to get out of this is the process so that you know what to think about. There is a lot that goes into remodeling a white kitchen. Many things to consider ahead of time. What type of counters to get, lighting, tile, appliances and more.
    After doing all of my research, I think that these are the best under cabinet lights and I used them in this remodel...

      refinishing the existing cabinets absolutely was a consideration. We probably could have saved a few thousand dollars. However, we did want a new look. The style of the older cabinets were more country and we no longer wanted that.

      Hmmm.... a pocket door could resolve (partially) a problem corner in my galley kitchen, but I already have to open a 27-inch-wide case opening from the kitchen to the breakfast room, hoping I may finagle a 36-inch door. I had hoped to use the bottom half of a Dutch door there since its main function will be to sequester two Norwegian Elkhounds from the cooking space when necessary.
      With the galley lay-out, I have one wall that is mostly windows, one that is all wall, and two walls that will be all door to the adjacent rooms (breakfast and dining rooms).
      The all wall over the proposed cooktop is really the only place for Chef Mike to live. I'm aging in place and going to a wall oven to eliminate bending to use the oven. There will be a warming drawer just below the cooktop, and two 30-inch storage drawers (a column of 800-series Bosch stainless drawers under the granite countertop with a black porcelain gas cooktop, the stainless Bosch mike above the granite backsplash will carry on the theme and provide a focal point across from the hammered copper sink which will be slightly off-center under the windows. The cooktop will be flanked with 15-inch landing countertops with a 30-inch convection oven at one end and a 36-inch full-depth French-door fridge (problem corner, remember) at the other.
      I have about 27 inches from either end wall to the window opening, and since I have to reframe the wall due to water damage, I want to widen the windows slightly for more light.
      I have to agree with @ Sweet Crimson that the spice pull-out should be closer to the prep area and the cooktop.
      How has that worked out?

    I wish my kitchen were this easy. We are going to add what technically is a peninsula but in reality we’re going to remove a wall and add an island that goes all the way to the perpendicular wall. Not only that we have to add a natural gas line and pluming which maybe a problem since we don’t have a basement and have a concrete slab. Luckily we’re going to do the floors but it only adds to the cost. I appreciate the video. I obviously didn’t expect something specific to what I needed. I’d assume I first have to remove the wall, move the utilities to where the appliances will go, so the floors, and then the cabinets. It does seem like that will take many months because it’s not exactly something you can do all at once.

    • @flannelguydiy6458
      @flannelguydiy6458  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael, it is all about the planning. Take the time to figure all of this out before you start anything. If you want gas, then you can figure it out. You can cut a trench in the slab and run the the gas line in there. Rent a jackhammer from Home Depot. Thanks so much for watching.

    • @flannelguydiy6458

      That is really hard to say. Every scenario is different depending upon where you need to move it to, where it needs to exit the house, etc. I recommend negotiating with the contractor to remodel your kitchen. Then, after he has given you a price ask if he can include moving of the vent as part of the deal. There is a good chance you will get it thrown in for nothing.

    Great video! Can you share your crown molding size and brand and how far from the ceiling did you mount your cabinets to accommodate the crown molding?

    • @flannelguydiy6458
      @flannelguydiy6458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pang. thank you. I do not remember what size the molding is and the brand was never disclosed by the lumber yard. As far as the distance from the ceiling that really depends upon the size of your cabinets. The upper cabinets need to be installed a certain height above the lower cabinets. Then, whatever space you are left with above is what you then have to deal with for your crown molding. Hopefully your ceiling is level. If the space up there is too wide then you just install some filler pieces before the crown molding.That is what I have up there.

      Catherine, that counter is called River Blue. The cost of it really depends upon your fabricator and how much you need. If I put it on a scale from 1-10 comparing it to the price of all counter top materials, I would say it is a 7

    I find it funny that this guy has no memory of the names or styles of everything he used. We are in the process of a soft kitchen remodel and I know the names of everything we have chosen. From the sink to the granite and subway tile. If you post videos like this, I think it’s nice to share the names. If you don’t want to, be honest and say you don’t want to share.

    • @flannelguydiy6458
      @flannelguydiy6458  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is it funny? It was over two and a half years ago and I have had so many other projects since. I also remodeled two bathrooms since that kitchen AND also remodeled a relatives kitchen. Any idea how many different materials I came in contact with? How many different granite and quartz slabs? If I was asked at the time the remodel was happening, I would have remembered the exact names of the tile for example. Has nothing to do with not wanting to share.

Lunch and breakfast is not really an issue with work but I just can’t imagine no kitchen for two weeks ( I think this will take at least that long for us. We are trying to do this and still work. I’m definitely going to have to use the contractor. Any tips ??

  • @habanerofg2

    Why did you put the flooring down first and put the cabinets on top of the flooring? If you ever sell the house and the new owners do not like the flooring, they will have to rip up the cabinets to get all the flooring up, then reinstall the cabinets and do the flooring they want.

    • @flannelguydiy6458
      @flannelguydiy6458  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry... but the best way is to lay the entire floor and place the cabinets on top. I really dont care about the next homeowners. What if the tile was installed your way but the next homeowner wanted to replace the cabinets? Then, they would have spaces where the old cabinets were.

      Steve, the crown came pre-primed. Then, I put the sections across saw horses in my garage and painted them there before installing.I used high quality benjamin moore paint and also an excellent brush. Very few brush strokes are visible.

    kitchen is beautiful - great choice of colors. The fillers on either side of the sink look to be installed upside down -- unless you originally planned on adding rosettes at the top. They shouldn't hit the floor like that -- should line up with toe kick on adjacent cabinets. Great use of space though, nice job
