    You can only get true sound by hearing and not hearing. I am going blind and hear a natural beat in nature and nothing else feels quit as good! I understand the ambiance as I worked in Los Angeles. You mentioned Arnold , I was in the Terminator and after watching the the movie I saw the way sound was instrumental in the end product.

    The exaggeration might be a bit too much here for some tastes (i.e super close grass crunching), but he clearly describes why sound replacement is needed generally. When the narrator is informing of what's happening and setting up the scene, having distracting and incorrect sound is going to pull a lot of people out of the moment. Imagine if you heard all of the background banter of the film crew and tourists (as he shows here) when trying to get a sense of the danger a lioness poses to prey when in hunting mode. It will just jar and it isn't natural to hear all of that human activity. Also bound by the limitations of the time of day where they were able to capture shots, having an erratic switching of ambience feels jumpy.
    I personally much prefer the concept that documentary is an interpretation of what happens as best as they could capture on the day (or days) of filming. There's plenty of real-life human interaction from peoples camera-phone films on youtube, this is about a descriptive presentation of nature. If they can capture more usable audio in the moment - awesome! but it's going to be extremely difficult to do that for your average documentary show I'm sure.

    You can tell that they added a fake burnt-in timecode for show. Any footage under an hour is reserved for identifying the shot, directors notes etc. Anything going towards the final cut begins at 01:00:00:00, and that is an industry standard for both film and broadcast.
    And about the on-set microphones, it sounds like they're using cardioid microphones instead of shotgun. It would explain the amount of bleed they get.

    To be more accurate, the 1920s did not add Foley because the mics did not pic up sound. There was no sound in the 1920s, until The Jazz Singer, so this explanation is not correct. My book, The Foley Grail, gives the correct history of how Foley began.

    • @MrMockRock
      @MrMockRock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They just explained that quite well. You need to remember that a camera and mic isn't a real representation of what's happening either.

  • @LiamCuthbert
    @LiamCuthbert 10 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    I can understand using this stuff in films and movies, but in real-life documentaries i'd rather just hear the real sound, not fake sound. the whole point of things like wildlife documentaries is to capture everything as it is, even if the sound does sound a little off, its real, and thats the point.

    • @sicolara
      @sicolara 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think so.
      I hate the sound exaggeration, I think elegance is to harmonize sound and visual parts. It's like food: a bad meal was behind too much sauce.
      A good documentary need a good mind and ear on the field recording for a good sound. Foley is fiction.

    • @subramaniamsounddesigner1157
      @subramaniamsounddesigner1157 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      liam cuthbert think of a situation when there's voice over in a specific portion of the documentary, and the actual sound in that portion has people (cameraman, driver) talking in the field..
      you can't mute people from talking, cuz it's a danger prone area..
      if you reduce the level of sound, you're going to lose the sound of real ambience and animal sfx as well..
      what will be the sound outcome if you add the real sound in this case?

    • @sicolara
      @sicolara 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      Maybe not science, but art craftwork.
      Reality is more than fiction. Good works don't need fireworks and popcorns to be interesting and eye-catching. This kind of works is very "mcdonaldized" taste, and in some way childhish.
      Foley, yes, but like salt and pepper.

    • @sicolara
      @sicolara 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Subramaniam Sound Designer
      The sound matters. If the crew is making noise, a better sound responsible asking for silence is needed . But pro workers don't need it, they know how important is to be quiet when rec is on. If there's voices over, is not a professional product, sorry. Foley is to reinforce, not to replace.

    • @Kyrieru
      @Kyrieru 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Sico Lara If you watch some of the behind the scenes footage from documentaries like Plant Earth, there are situations that require a lot of communication between camera crews, such as between a helicopter and the ground crew. In addition, as shown in this video there are scenes that are filmed far away, in order to avoid interfering with the animal's behavior. In such scenes, it can be nigh-on impossible to use the actual sounds, because they are either unusable, or non-existent.
      In other words, don't make blanket statements about film, or what the audience prefers. Because that will only go to show how little you know about "art".
