    Yep, that first '56 looks _identical_ to the first amp I ever bought, as a Toronto teenager back in the 70s: paid $40 for it. Those were the days.

    Your strum does not suck... very smooth, rhythm. Agree with your analysis. I have owned Princetons for thirty something years, play archtop, and twin humbucker Carvin... very different tones, but both sound great with minor tonal adjustments.

      @jpalberthoward9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should do that. Callaham bridges are the goods! When I got mine, I hung the block from a piece of string and tapped it with a screwdriver. It rang like a wind chime for about 30 seconds. I knew right away that I had something. If you get one of those things, you will not be disappointed. Spend the money and get all of it, bridge, block, saddles and bar. You'll be amazed.

    I've been wanting to sell my 57 Princeton because it just seems too valuable to use, considering the simplicity of the circuit. But hearing you play through one has me changing my mind, at least until I can take the time to build my own. That Stratotone is cool, I bid on one at a local auction a couple years ago but dropped out at $875. Again, just seems like a lot of money for something so rudimentary. I like having this stuff but given the price of vintage gear, I often can't justify keeping it around to just play occasionally.

    • @aidantalbot9495
      @aidantalbot9495 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a tool to use and be inspired by the sound, forget the monetary 'value', music is your win, enjoy it; that is the goal

    • @joeltunnah
      @joeltunnah ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually don't enjoy playing "heirloom" amps and guitars. It's stressful. I also like putting my own wear on things, and building amps is really fun.
      Build a Princeton clone, and pocket the (lots of) money from the vintage model.

    The pickup on that little Harmony guitar sounds a bit like a Tele neck pickup. I kinda dig it.

  • @picksalot1
    @picksalot1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I loved the way the Harmony Stratotone sounds, and the Amps. I'm very interested in the wiring of how the Parallel Resistors were installed. I have a Strat with an overly bright bridge pickup that I'd like to try that mod on. Do you have a Wiring Diagram, or some simple instructions on where to put the Resistors and their Values? I also have an old Kinman pickup in the neck position, and it sounds great. Thanks

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What value volume pot do you have in your Strat, and is your bridge pickup connected to a tone pot (most are not)?

    • @picksalot1
      @picksalot1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PsionicAudio I found a TH-cam video called "How to Decrease a Pot's Resistance Value" which shows how to calculate the Resistor value using a free Windows program. I was able to bring my ~250k Pot's Value down to ~167k using a 470k Resistor. I tried several different Value Resistors, and that one gave me the best results. It got rid of high harshness of the Pickup, and changed its voicing (resonant frequency?), lowering it into a more pleasant frequency. The Tone Pot for that Pickup seems to work more gradually and evenly now. Using a Resistor is a simple, inexpensive way to change a Pots' Value. Thanks for the tip. 👍

    You obviously have a bustle in your hedgerow..
    Your playing is fine, always illustrative of the sound of the amp/guitar combo (I’d be much worse coming up with stuff I learned years ago playing them off the top of my head)..
    The ‘76 would be the most versatile for most of us weekend warriors with the 10, close to a DR, perfect for really low volume gigs like the owner plays..
    One suggestion I’ve thought about after watching all of your videos : when appropriate and feasible volume-wise in your room I think it would be really informative for some of us to put a neutral sounding overdrive in front of the amp (I know, the dreaded “T” word), especially with just a bit of grit on the amp.. Fenders and Voxes in particular with no other effects added.. Again, only a suggestion but for me a Paul Cochrane made Timmy serves that purpose well..

    Can you tell me what the difference is with a Callaham bridge in an EJ strat? Does it make a playability difference? I have a recent EJ strat, I think it's beautiful and sounds great, but it feels very "stiff" to play compared to the others...thanks!

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Better knife edges for tuning stability, no wiggle in the bar, nicer bar, longer slots in the saddles to eliminate a witness point. But “stiffness” in a guitar is often a combination of neck relief/string height/radius/neck angle.
      The neck on this guitar likes Eb better than E. Sounds good in E, sings in Eb. Wood gonna wood…

    What I want to know, and I am dead serious about it, is, what gives an amp that fast attack and ease of doing hammer-ons and pull-offs? Is that just compression or is it something more? I notice that Mesa Boogie amps have a cold, rigid, dry, hard-to-play feeling to them, but amps like the PRS MT15, Engl Ironball, and Fireball have a bouncy, instant attack, rubberband-like feeling when doing hammer on's and pull offs. Feels like I have to press twice as hard on the guitar when playing a Mesa Boogie and even a few Marshalls (save for the JVM)

    • @darwinsaye
      @darwinsaye 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t speak for the amps you mentioned, but someone somewhere gave you a completely backwards idea of what compression does. Tube amp compression *reduces* fast attack. A solid state amp that has zero tube compression with have a sharper attack than a tube amp being pushed into overdrive. What tube compression is, is when you hit the signal hard the circuitry will “sag”, softening the volume on the attack, and then letting it bloom back up to full volume right after, so that you get less snap on that initial pick attack.

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The real answer sounds like a non-answer, but it's a lot of cumulative design decisions. Mesa doesn't actually have design, so...
