Champion forward Jason Dunstall makes it a century of goals in a season for the sixth time against Melbourne in Round 22, 1996. The game is better known for talks surrounding the merging of the Hawthorn and Melbourne Football Club, but the star ensured the Hawks would win a heartstopping one-point game with 10 goals.

I don't think we're ever gonna see a full forward with marking and kicking skills like Dunstall.

His 2nd half of 1996 was the reason we made the finals. His last 3 games before the Qualifying final where he did his knee he kicked 30 goals. And he was clearly on the decline as a player. The first ton he kicked when the team was a middle of the road side. Showing his greatness.

Couldn’t agree more if you look back at that season our second half of the season the Adelaide come back game was a bit of a turning point. The team as a whole were on the decline but really dug deep and found something extra almost as if they collectively decided they were going to have a real crack if Hawthorn was going to merge at the end of the year.

Nah. The rules and playstyle of the modern game will never ever let anyone kick 100+. You’d have to be insanely better than any other forward to even chance it.

We'll probably never see someone kick 100 goals in a season ever again. The game has become far too defensive, which means any big full forward will have about 3 opposition players on them. I still remember the outrage in 2008 when Fevola didn't kick his 100th because he was being tagged by 3 Hawks players (despite the Hawks being well in the clear, and Franklin had already kicked his 100th). Now nobody bats an eyelid, because 3 defenders on 1 forward in the norm

One of the greatest games ever. If Hawthorn lost, we would've merged. I was there and ran on at the 100th. I also beat Dunstall (it's true!) as a 12yr old in a Gold 104.3FM dropkick competition and won a signed Sherrin.... signed by Peter Hudson!
