  • I demonstrate turning a multi axis duck. This is a fun project that is well within the skills of a novice turner.
The inspiration for this was a project plan from the South Aukland Woodturners Guild. Here is a link to their Handout sawg.org.nz/sa...

Thanks for including the catch, I'm glad to see it's not just me. When someone with so much more experience than I has the occasional catch the busts off a chunk, I don't feel so bad the it happens to me as an extreme novice.
Looks like tail feathers are extremely difficult. Thanks for trying again and showing "plan B".

Thomas Russell Thanks. I have seen a lot of demonstrators get catches and worse over the years.

Mike, thanks for that, warts and all. I've been turning for just a couple of months and I'm reassured that even the masters have problems sometimes. Gives me hope in my progress. Bob from The U.K.

I enjoyed that Mike. It makes me feel good to know that even professionals sometimes have troubles.
    God Bless my friend.

Hi Mike, I must have watched this one fifty times to try to understand the catch. I can now do the catch perfectly every time.Lol. Hence the going back to watch again. I now have an idea why the catch happens and have been successful. I learned from someone, I can't remember who, that with a skew you never stop part way on a cut or it will likely catch, and what I have noticed that the presentation of the edge of the spindle gouge in this project is very similar cutting to skew cut. I noticed in both examples you seemed to stop before the cut progressed to the neck, and then the catch happened. I may be over analyzing but it is great that you have such a good video to help me learn and gain confidence with the challenges of off center spindle turning.

Thanks for the video, Mike. I have been thinking of trying this, so it is a timely refresher.

Mike was the first duck made out of oak or a tighter grained wood. I have the worst time trying to cut details in oak. Probably just me not being a good turner. Thanks for sharing.

My problems were mostly with oak. And I agree that cutting details in oak is sometimes a challenge.

Perhaps a round carbide cutter applied from the top side would eliminate the tail from being broken off.
I do indeed like watching your demonstrations and have even tried a few of them myself.
    Thanks for it teachings.

Eggs??? Still can't find them. It's a good job there wooden (your design), because if they were Choc or Real they would surly be bad by now. Thanks Mike for the inspiration. Now I have to find both time and the courage to try Multi Axis. Work gets in the way of Recreation. Most of us know that problem. Keep them coming ;0

Nice job Mike. Too bad about the catches though, you take that right in stride! It looked to me like the catches happened not when you were cutting but when you tried to reposition the tool.

It looks like if when you finish the back cut you should exit by pulling straight back with your right hand rather than backing up by following your tracks out. I hope that makes sense. Cool idea I like smaller projects

You may be right. I will try this again one day. Right now I have too many things on my plate.

Hey Mike You forgot to use the cove tool with the micro bevel again. It would have been the answer to braw catch free feathers :-) Good on you for perseverance with the spindle gouge though.

I did one tonight and did use that cove tool succesfully!

Very interesting, but I usually use a baseball and glove to play catch. ;-D Kidding! Cute little project that seems to require more skill than I have...at least for the tail feathers. May I ask why you switched from metric to imperial for the measurements? President Carter should have completed the change over...metric is much more simple.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am trying to be more sensitive to my international viewers re: metric. It is difficult for me to be consistent. Sometimes I use metric and sometimes imperial.
