Is a real boy/was a real boy is impressive as fuck. Especially since max pretty much made up all the music besides drums. Dude will forever be respected for making this record
This album helped saved my damn life. Lost my sister, was bullied, beaten at home. This album was everything I needed not to end my life. Through I still cut during this time, this album gave me hope to continue! Thank you Say Anything!
Have you ever considered heroin or maybe something a little more normal? Bondage/rough sex? Most living organisms don’t like to injure themselves. It seems like you have a bad habit you use to get attention more than anything. Hope you get yourself help.
I fell into this album when I was disfellowshiped from being a Jehovah's Witness and living on the street. There is something amazing and cathartic here.
@@babywolfg I’ve read testimonials of women in midlife crises who took a DP plus a D to the face that said they never felt more full. It’s just a thought. I’m trying to help here. You don’t have to be so negative.
The tour they did with Kenny from TSL on bass/backing vocals...still one of my favorite shows I've seen seen. I went with a friend and I legit forgot he even existed.
The band has meant a lot to me, and a lot of other people too. There isn't an objective "best band" IMO, but this band is one that got a lot of people through some really dark and confusing times. Shout out to Max for being so vulnerable
This is the most meta thing I've watched, I am having an out of body experience. This album has been the anthem of my life since I was 14. THANK YOU MAX FOR SHARING THIS SO SINCERELY WITH US.
Reading the headlines this morning I’m reminded of how important these songs have been to my life. I was 21 in Detox clutching a tiny boom box the staff let me keep in my room. I had one CD left because I had sold all the others or left them in places I was no longer welcome. I’ll let you guess which CD. Belt means something completely different in detox and lines like “I’m still the optimist though it is hard when all you want to be is in a dream” are probably the only thing that kept me from walking out the door. I’d literally be dead if it weren’t for those songs. Thank You For My Life
My man my man my man... You don't even know how identical your story is to mine. Including the masterpiece that is say anything (particularly this album) as well as my journey getting clean and finding self. All love brother
I hate it that he feels those criticism towards this album. His voice sounds perfect on this album, way better than anything else is ever recorded. Also all that hardship is how this beautiful art came out
one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. a pop punk masterpiece. max is a genius and his voice (writing voice, not literal voice) is so clear in every song in a way that felt like getting stabbed in the heart, alone in my room at age 17
This album was literally always playing ether in my house or my car. The writhing south and alive with the glory of love are two songs in my top 10 of all time.
Thank you for doing this interview. One of my favorite albums ever. My fav by Say Anything. So introspective and articulate. Not just teenage angst like they are accused of.
A friend gave me this album during college when I was kind of lost as a person. I was on a college baseball team but didn’t feel like I belonged and didn’t fit in with the party/hyper-masculine/drinking mainstream of college. I would play this album on repeat on bus trips and weirdly enough I remember those moments listening to Is a Real Boy more than actually playing many of the games. Thanks Max.
Thanks for sprinkling in some amazingness in my teenage life. I am alive because of music. I would not have made it if I couldn't have done this singing along to artists like you.
Early in my Freshman year when the music video for Alive with the glory of love came out it was on tv nearly every morning and I have so much nostalgia for it. Probably my favorite music vid ever

anybody else heard the sad news today?.. i wished i could have seen this guy performing live at least once, hope is going to have other cool projects in the future
This makes me so sad and happy. Sad because I never got to see them live. Maybe they'll do a reunion tour sometime? Maybe he'll play a bit in Brooklyn with his wife?
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those albums that is only fully appreciated years and years later when everyone has had sufficient time to realize how great it actually is it
Top ten albums that got me through adolescence/early adulthood. It's such a perfect snapshot of youthful angst and depression. This is one of those albums you felt "saw" you.
Funny enough I never noticed the guitar tones being done through a POD. Pretty interesting how people used to trash the POD back then and some of the sounds they get are phenomenal. Digital processors have come so much farther since then, but they did manage to get really good sounds out of it back then.
one of my friends had a skate video with every man has a molly as the song. after that i listened to the whole album and fell in love with it immediately. i listened to it on loop for over a year. every song is perfect its crazy. and they don’t really sound the same. max is one of the best lyricists in my opinion
Omg!!!! The fact that he said he would record the entire thing all over again aaahhh! I love this album. As long as it wouldnt get rid of this one, I would love a remastered Max version
I can't even think of the right words to say to this, in all honesty. But...love this album. And this video. I'm crying actual tears listening to this, for some reason. I'm a weird mixture of both sad and happy over recent Max decisions, but I respect the guy.
Ill never forget back in 2012 (relatively late for this album) my brother played “wow i can get sexual too” and i liked it, fast forward to this year it turns out the whole album is a banger. Now im starting my 20s w. This album like most did back then, the cycle continues!

Alive with the glory of love was the song I was listening too when I realized I had a very real lesbian love for someone for my first time. Hearing him explaining it is so ironic because back then the world really did conspire to keep us apart.

"him in denial of it not being him the whole time"...That is absolutely what Ive been thinking. The words are too sincere and emotionally sung for him to not have felt the way he describes on the album
Glad I’m not the only one that picked up on this, when I read his farewell thing for the new album I was confused, like I understand the logic of looking back and really hating the person you were but to say that it was a character I call bullshit, when you clearly have gone through multiple things that happened I just don’t believe it being a character, it’s going to be weird with the new album because already the two songs I’ve heard definitely don’t sound relatable and is over the top in some ways, they are good songs but the lyrics don’t mean anything to me.
