It would've been awesome to see a Doctor Strange movie with Vincent Price.

Oh god yes. Even the older him as an old, grizzled version of the character. It would be far, far to good of a thing to ever come into existence in a modern movie though, sadly.... >_

Byron Orpheus in the Venture Bros (who is a stand-in for Dr. Strange) is also a more obvious homage to Vincent. From his appearance to even the fact his music cues sound like they came from Roger Corman 'Poe films.

All we need is a solid impersonator and for Marvel to start taking their animation seriously again, and we could get it.

Vincent Price was so classy, yet so down to Earth. He did a lot of material meant for children because he knew that when they grew up, they'd be fans of his. You'd think a guy that did so much schlock would become jaded and bitter (like the Alan Rickman character in Galaxy Quest,) but instead he gave every role his all. My favorite Vincent Price role was "Masque of the Red Death" where he played an evil bastard prince (but one with layers to him, inclined to the occasional act of mercy - a deeply complex role that few actors would have had the charisma to pull off.)

    • @johnathonhaney8291
      @johnathonhaney8291 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

theproplady A favorite of mine too. I saw his Prince Prospero as a man of firm but undeniably evil faith. His occasional acts of mercy are always consistent with that idea.

I only just realized what a massive impact Vincent Price has had on my life! When I was in middle school, I was chosen to do the Vincent Price Narration for the choir's rendition of Thriller, and given how sullen I always was, being a little shit back then, that was one of the first times I recieved genuine praise for something I did. This helped lead me out of my little cocoon of self-pity so I could actually live my life, rather than perpetually feel sorry for myself. Ever since then, Vincent Price has crept his way into my regular speaking voice, which led me into drama and voice acting, the only places where I wouldn't be expected to hold him back. I always thought it was just my upbringing on Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that it was Vincent Price who genuinely made me the man I am today. Thanks, Vince! You really are the best!

He is one of those rare actors that would make any director joyous to have because he was the consummate professional. He loved what he did, and even if the result was bad, he appreciated the hard work of its creation. Like others after him like Christopher Walken, Alan Rickman even Whilem Dafoe, you know you will always get their A game.

I met Mr. Price after a lecture he gave called "The Villain Still Pursues Me." He discussed type casting, art, cooking and theater. Afterwards, he was extremely kind to me, a 14 year old horror movie fan, and stayed around for quite awhile to chat. I also saw him many years later in a on-man show as Oscar Wilde and in another as Theo - brother of Vincent Van Gogh. Great performances & a great man.

I've only seen a handful of Price's films, and was unaware of his early work. There's something about the man that makes you feel he would've been a great person to have a conversation with, or to listen talking about his work or about art or life. And if nothing else, he was always worth watching.

I actually do a bit of voice acting in my spare time, and I always love to play villains the most. Why do I bring this up? Because everytime I hear Vincent Price speak in a film, I think to myself, "Yes! That's *exactly* what I'd do!" Or at least what I'd try for, anyway. He's the kind of classically trained almost-but-not-quite ham that I aspire most to be as an actor, and I always love to see him at work.

My favorite Vincent Price movie is "The Last Man on Earth" (1964). It's based on the 1954 novel I Am Legend, which is the same novel that Charlton Heston's "Omega Man" (1971) and Will Smith's "I Am Legend" (2007) are based on. Vincent Price spends a lot of the movie as a narrator, talking to himself, or talking to a dog, and not a second of it is boring. "The Last Man on Earth" is available all over the internet because it's in the public domain, like "Night of the Living Dead", so go watch it.

The Last Man on Earth (both the short story and the film) is the direct inspiration that George A. Romero cited as what got him to think of what the night of the apocalypse caused by the Undead would look like, and led to Night of the Living Dead (1968), which invented the modern zombie.

As a kid in the 70s I used to watch The Hilarious House Of Frightenstein at 9am every Saturday and Vincent was the host of the show. My brothers and I would make our huge bowls of Booberry, Frankenberry and Count Chocula cereal and plop down on the floor 2 feet away from the tv. The good ol' days.
My grampa would watch the old movies with me too. My gramps got me into a lot of stuff like The Twilight Zone, spaghetti Westerns, war movies, Abbott & Costello, Marx Bros, 3 Stooges.

Probably because it is an odd film to say the least: it is obviously a straight up horror flick at first glance but it also has serious comedic undertones and so it almost can't decide what kind of genre it wants to fit into. That's my two cents anyway!

I grew up on The Great Mouse Detective, and found many more of his movies afterwards, resulting in the big honking fan I am now. I even bought a 1st edition of one of his cookbooks for myself for christmas one year. But, I would have to say that my favorite of his is a tie between House of Wax (being an eccentric artist myself) and Dragonwyck. I particularly enjoy Dragonwyck on the level of it being one of his more early roles, 1946, but he gets to play the "Dashing" lead....and also a small glimpse at the characters he would later become famous for playing.

Glad you mentioned his radio work in 'The Saint' those broadcasts are quite fun and well worth listening to.
Unlike a lot of actors, Vincent Price seemed to honestly love and have fun acting, and that never diminished during his entire career. He gave every role 100% making him often the best thing in some very bad films.

In a way that kinda is Vincent Pricey (or at least one of his movie roles), not only did my father look just like Vincent Price, he knew it and was also a huge fan. So I grew up with the badly imitated version of Vincent Price, which just made me love the original even more.

Heck The Maltese Falcon is one of my favorites and i even have a replica od the prop. Sure it picks up when it turns out shes not dead but befire that god was it a slog. I may not be the best authority, since I'm hardly that in-depth a fan. All i know is that I like the performances, perhaps Webb most of all. Vincent Price's character is corrupt but endearing. Dorothy Adams is an odd character actress who makes a strong impression. It's a fair mystery -- if Laura wasn't killed, then who? And for me Gene Tierney is serious swoon material. Yes, I absolutely agree it's no Falcon or Big Sleep, but for me various little aspects of it come together into a satisfying whole. I'm afraid that's a very idiosyncratic answer -- if it's not for you, I can understand.

Witchfinder General is easily my favourite Vincent Price film. He's utterly intense in the film, and yet he's charming as hell throughout it as well. Like Georg said, it's brutal and was censored for good reason, but it's totally worth watching, the tone of the film and the way in which the story progresses is so unique. Very disturbing film, but always entertaining and extremely engaging. I actually wish that there were more films like it, hence why it's one of my all-time favourite films.

I'm a usual subscriber. One of the first movies I ever saw in my life as a child was The Great Mouse Detective. I got here from looking up reviews for that movie and watching the nostalgia critic talk about Ratigan, more over Vincent Price, and typing him I find this. Now I can appreciate everything in reverse. Go back and watch nostalgia critic do the review for the Great Mouse Detective and then watch it with my new wisdom.

One of his greater moments that summed up his real personality was the outtake from Thriller where at the end of his rap he gives a joyful laugh and says, "It's great fun." As a teenager, I always wondered what Vincent thought of his part in the song and that pretty much told me everything about that and how he saw himself and his work.

Thank you for this video and for all the entertaining and informative content you provide. I was happy to see you singled out Mr Price. As a movie lover, Vincent Price has always been a favorite. I've always been in awe of how he single handedly can raise the real estate of any film he appears. My personal fave is "The Pit and the Pendulum" (True! True!) but despite the distasteful misogyny in "The Witchfinder General", Vincent brings a sinister evil that only a serous black belt actor could convey. Thanks again for your channel.

I'm so glad you made this (really well done) video. For some time now I've lamented Price's place in the cultural consciousness as solely a "horror icon" on account of the MANY great performances he gave in a wide array of different kinds of films.
For instance he's HYSTERICAL in "His Kind of Woman", a quasi-film noir from 1951 starring Robert Mitchum, where he plays this monstrously, though hilariously, self-absorbed movie star (I literally laugh my way entirely through the final 20 minutes, due to Price, every time I see it). He's also great in films like "Song of Bernadette", and "The Barron of Arizona", and particularly in Otto Preminger's deservedly-renowned "Laura". I could go on, but the long list of REALLY interesting, and VARIED, performances Price gave long before he became a "horror"-icon is seemingly endless. And as you point here he was an exceptionally cultivated guy with many interests/skills beyond acting. I wish more people were aware he's so much more than a pop culture-category-marker.

His Last Man on Earth is still the best interpretation of that story. Vincent himself is compelling in the role of course. Also it's the only film version that doesn't COMPLETELY miss the whole point of the story like Heston's dumb shoot-em-up or Smith's Hollywood sell out happy ending for humanity.

I love him in drama, comedy, horror and costume dramas. HIs voice was a joy to listen to and I loved his narrations. He was a very enteraining man when interviewed and was able to have a joke at his expense. I imagine he would have been a very pleasant person to know.

I grew up in Oak Park, Il... In a Gunderson, on Gunderson. I remember the block parties we had when I was a kid. I would get up early to ride my bike in the street as they put up the traffic barriers--indulging in the novelty of the thing. All day and late into the night we would have food and activities going on... I remember one year, breaking away from the fun, to go inside just in time to catch the Son of Svengoolie show; the featured movie that week being, The Raven--a great movie. It was the only thing that could've pulled me away from the fun outside without regret. Great vid.

Vincent Price was always one of my favorites. As a kid and teenager I devoured his movies over and over again. He was one of those actors who made even the cheesiest movies entertaining because he was in them. My favorites are The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Doctor Phibes Rises Again, The Raven, Mask of the Red Death (this one is so totally awesome) and The Raven. If you ever get the chance check out Comedy of Terror - one of the best black comedies ever put to film. (It has Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff in it, how could you go wrong?) IMO, his best two movies (though not my personal top ten favorites) were The Last Man on Earth and The Conqueror Worm. What a truly unique talent.

I liked that portmanteau film where he was the proprietor of a club for monsters. A human couple had stumbled in and he was regaling them with tales of terrible monsters. It captured the friendliness and malevolence, that he would normally play one or the other, into a single role. You would normally feel either safe or in danger with his characters, but in this role you felt both.

I love the old-fashioned suspense/horror genre that Price typified. It was all about atmosphere rather than gore. And what a charismatic fellow he was. Vincent Price was amazing in practically every role he played. I'm partial to the comedic ones he has played, especially on television. Such as Egghead on the 60's Batman, the crazed man in the Brady Bunch Hawaiian episodes, even the commercials he did like for Hangman and Shrunken Head Apple Sculpture Kit. I also love his passion for cooking, he even made a full meal in a dishwasher! He was a great treasure of a human being.

Perhaps not a favorite film, but being a Wisconsin native I was fortunate enough to see and remember commercials for "Cousins Subs" in which Mr. PRICE starred in a few commercials in the 80's. I met Mr Price backstage at a performance of his one man show at Stony Brook State University - must have been in the 70's. I waited in the wings, where I knew he would have to exit the stage, and at the end of the performance the curtain came down, the lights went down, and I completely missed him passing me (so close I could have kissed him). He turned himself OFF when he left the stage! And that, perhaps is the most useful tool he had to maintain a long, happy career in acting. He was not always on...I did realize who he was and got to talk to him briefly, but this chameleon character is something unforgettable.

I watched 'The Tingler' the other night, it's so clear when he's working with such material he's just having fun. He knows where it's coming from. Although, when he's in something like Witch Finder General or Masque of the Red Death he's quite disturbing and intense. I think he just knew exactly how to project the role with the script he was given.

My favourite Vincent Price movie is Theatre of Blood. Plays the part of Lionheart to absolute perfection, and does the deep tragedy moments and the blatantly comical just as brilliantly. As usual in so many Vincent Price horror performances, he can perform the most ghastly deeds while effortlessly gaining the sympathy of the audience. Vincent was thrilled at having such a distinguished cast to work with on ToB, and it was so obvious he had a great time doing it.

I think one of my favorite Price films is Madhouse, though I'm not sure why. on the surface it seems a little flat, but I just love watching it. This might well be your best video to date. I have not watched them all; but I too am a Vincent Price fan. I had the great honor of meeting him once. I won't drone on about it, suffices to say he was a cheerful, patient and tactful gentleman to all. I told him my surreal riddle. I came up with it driving home from final exams one fall. The last exam was in Art History; and the last question was about Salvador Dali. Thus the surreal riddle. PM me if you would like to hear it.
