One of the best things I have ever "discovered" while being around chickens is this...... The sleeve off a sz large or XL tee shirt is your best friend, just slip it over their head til head comes out the wrist part with the rest down over the wings, this replaces that extra set of hands needed for most things and really speeds things up, nail trimming, draining water belly etc. etc. Especially helpful when nobody else is around to lend their hands. Things get so easy when those wings are held in place. That old sweatshirt sleeve is truly worth it's weight in gold! Hope this helps someone.
I just want to thank you so much! Because of your video, we were able to save the life of our little baby. She couldn't walk, she was panting, and could barely hold her little head up. You were so to the point and mentioned everything from symptoms, to how to help her relax, all the way down to what to expect when she was finally able to get the egg moving and out. Thank you so, so, much!! YOU'RE AN ANGEL!
We have a chicken that continuous gets egg bound. At least twice a month. I have noticed that what we do, is pick her up and massage her chest. Kind of like when they have sour crop. It doesn’t take about three minutes and she passes the bound up egg. Maybe it’s all about shocking the system of the chicken instead of soaking them? I have done both. You might want to try massaging their chest first to see if that works so you don’t have to soak them for 20 minutes.
I see this video is 3 years old but what a joy to see someone so passionate about her chickens and give such a wonderful description of what to do to. Thank you.
This was the best video I found. We Have a rhode island red that sat in nesting box all day yesterday. This morning stayed on roost and didn’t go out. Gave our chicken bath in warm water. Dried her. Returned her to coop. Within minutes she laid an egg in the middle of the run and then had large runny poop. Now eating and drinking and acting normally. Thank you for your story.
I just have to thank you so much for making this video. Same exact symptoms happened with my hen and it took two epsom soaks, lots of very gentle massaging and I got her to pass two wonky eggs! She’s fine now. I hate to think the kind of suffering she would’ve endured had I not been able to intervene. ❤
I cannot thank you enough! This video helped me save my chickens life! If you hadnt made this video, she would not be here and I am forever grateful you made it. I have never seen this method before on the internet, and believe me, I am a ravenous online researcher in regards to chickens. I am sharing this far and wide because everyone needs to know how to do this. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Thank you. We just lost a hen last week that passed away during the nighr. I believe this was why. She was older & didn’t lay regularly so no one caught on until it was too late.
Found your video several hours ago after noticing faithy, our hen was not being her happy self. Hubby and I did exactly what you said. Warm Epsom bath, gentle massage and patience. Wrapped her in a towel and additional gentle massage. She released a deflated egg shell in one piece. She's eating and cleaning and drinking water. Thank you SO much! Several weeks ago we had the same thing happen to our chicken named Hope. We took her to the vet and we were told that there was nothing we could do because the egg had been in her for days. So we had the vet put her to sleep sadly. Your video encouraged us to do whatever we could. And so far, my faithy is acting like her happy self. I can't thank you enough.
Aw we are so happy to hear that Faithy is doing well and you were able to save her ❤️ we are so sorry for your loss of your girl Hope. It is very sad losing them and that must have been a very hard choice. You took her to the vet and at least you know you were doing your best & all you could for her. Your flock is lucky to have great parents like yourselves ❤️
@@BockBockBouquet thank you again. Medical Center for bird's in Northern ca we're so sweet and gave us many options for our dear Hope. They come highly recommended. Hope went to chicken heaven very peacefully and we were able to say goodby. We gave her a wonderful life for the 9 months we had her and for that I am grateful. Faithy continues to be her feisty happy self, recovering nicely. We didn't know what was going on with Hope, but with your video we now have many tools to work with when it comes to my small flock of 3 and my rooster King Solomon. Thank you for your passion and love for animals. Hubby and I love and care for our fur babies and farm babies simply because it fills our hearts. Cheers to you Beautiful 😍
@@mtstateson8989 it depends on the procedure. We were at the vet recently for leg mites and spent 400.00 on medication for our flock of hens. When one has farm animals, be prepared financially because accidents happen or sometimes they simply are not acting like their happy selves and if you don't want to guess what's the matter, you take them to the vet and pay. We on the other hand know our animals and immediately do what we can to help get things back to normal
Thank you for your video. My mum has a chicken and she came over because she doesn't have a computer and she asked me to have a look. And i came across you video. She asked me to thank you because it worked. She was so happy the chicken laid the egg on her lap. She looked after her for 2 days. Thank you again for sharing.
I'm so glad your sweet chicken survived! You and your husband did a wonderful job! My sweet Easter egger got egg bound right as she started molting. We knew to give her an Epsom salt bath and while bathing her, I could feel the egg. We soaked her 2-3 times in 18 hours with no result. She was pooping yellow liquidy poop and wasn't eating too much I saw a TH-cam video that suggested using an extra strength Tums dissolved in a very small amount of water. I ran to the corner store at 1 am and crushed the Tums in a small amount of water and gave my girl the liquid by eye dropper till it was gone. I put her back in her emergency coop on her roost and 1 hour later when I checked on her and she had dropped a very large blue egg under the roost. She started acting lively almost immediately. After dropping the egg, she went into a medium molt and didn't lay an egg again for 3 weeks which was when she seemed to be out of her molt and her feathers were regrown.
Aw thank you I’m so happy to hear your girl is doing so much better! It’s a very stressful thing to go through, for you and your girl ❤️ the stress could have contributed to her molt as well
This may have just saved my Ethel. These are the symptoms she is having right now. I'm going to help her right away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
It is! We no longer feed the neighborhood squirrels and wild birds. We have a review video on the grandpas feeder here th-cam.com/video/Z0Wc9ltBIOo/w-d-xo.html
Such a cute way of telling your story. How stressful it must have been for you two and how wonderful you worked together on saving her. Kudos to you both 👏 ❣
I just saved our hen's life tonight exactly the same way thanks to your video. I knew she was egg bound and had given her one Epsom salts bath and also used mineral oil on her vent, but she was still in distress. This is my little boy's favorite hen. After watching your video, I decided I could not give up for anything and drew another bath and literally closed my eyes and felt for the egg, keeping in mind what you said about coaxing the egg out. And just like your girl, our girl passed two eggs, one fully formed and the other a water balloon egg. I feel like a midwife! It took her a while to recover from her exhaustion. You did inspire me to keep trying, and I am very thankful to you!
That makes us so happy to hear! So glad she’s doing well now and you were able to save her. What an experience that must have been on all of you but worth it in the end ❤️🐔
@@BockBockBouquet, she's out there running around looking for bugs this morning and feeling fine! I've heard now that a calcium deficiency can be the cause. We feed our flock a high-quality laying feed, but I think recently my son has been offering too many treats. Lucy is our Red Star and lays every day, so it makes sense that she would be low in calcium. I learned that you can take the liquid calcium gel caps and empty them onto mealworms. My friend's broody hen became egg bound, and she did that and she laid in 15 minutes. Unfortunately, these scary experiences make us better chicken "tenders." Thanks again. I've subscribed!
Yes we must always keep learning and educating ourselves to do the best we can. Having and tending to animals, things surprise you everyday. High production breeds are more prone to being egg bound because they were bred to lay so many eggs unfortunately. Oyster shell should always be available on the side free choice in a separate feeding container, grubs (black soldier fly larvae) is also very high in calcium. On Amazon they sell a liquid bird calcium that can also help with and prevent egg bound. Excess calcium on the other hand can be dangerous and cause damage to pullets not of laying age as their bodies can’t handle it yet, they do not need it and can damage their kidneys. When integrating young ones we feed our mixed flocks grower feed with calcium on the side free choice to our layers. Welcome to our channel 😊
And this is why you guys are the best Chicken parents, you put your Girl first not the camera or documentation and then created a re-construction to help others love you guys! :D
The water bath was a great idea!! I thought I might have an egg bound hen and a water bath was all I could think of to relax and lube her tummy. I appreciate your step by step procedure and the extra info in the case of an internal egg break. Thank you.
What a great video! That was very informative and helpful. Just got Chickens again after a thirteen year hiatus and having to get back in the swing of things! God Bless, Thank you!
Just had it happen to my 1st year rhode island red chicken and it was bad. I listen to what you said and now it is a waiting game to see if she will heal. Thankyou!!
Thank you for such an informative vid. One of my girls may be suffering this and I'm taking all your info, experience and advice to help her out. Bless you for sharing!
i want to thank u sooo much... my gf called me, she had an egg bound girl.... i watched other videos, but yours touched me... i'd like to let u know that "lily" the white chiggum, is doing great tonight... i was able to get the 'leather' egg out of her... clean her up and put antibiotic ointment on her backside.. b4 today, i would not have had a clue what to do.... u r awesome
Very helpful. I'm going to feel my chicken who is stolen and see if this is why she can't walk very well right now. She just sits in the hospital pen and won't get to to rest or drink. I hope it isn't too late. I thought there wasn't anything I could do, so I'm glad to hear that it is possible to ave my chicken's life!
So sorry about your girl not feeling well. Hope she gets better ❤️ She needs to eat and drink to get better if you can orally syringe with an irrigating syringe just be very careful as they aspirate easily. A little at a time and watch her swallow. If you gently pull her wattles down you can open her beak or pool it at the base of her mouth and some should get in her mouth and you’ll notice her swallow. Where is the swelling? Some vitamins in the water may help or feed scrambled egg or syringe egg yolk. Usually if they won’t eat or drink it’s not a good sign but if she can stay alive she can get better. Is she hunched with her butt down like a penguin? Are her toes curled at all? Are there other symptoms?
We are new 🐥 chicken owners and ignorance is bliss. One of our chickens was screaming (not bocking) she was in serious pain so I grabbed her and knew immediately it was a stuck egg. I could see it so I popped it and immediately she was relieved! She thanked me! I had no idea it wasn’t safe to do it. 🤷🏽♀️
Thank you for this! Great video and very informative! I don't ever think to grab a camera either when there is a chicken emergency! Your explanation of the events is very helpful!!
Thankyou so much,I have a young female pigeon with the same thing.. Just about to give her another warm bath as I have got one egg out,but she is still pushing. This has really helped my knowledge... Thankyou ❤
What a great informative description of the impacted egg and how you both helped deal with the situation as you've said recognising the problem and dealing with so quickly helped the hen recover thank you
Aww we have 2 brahmas they are such a great breed and beautiful big girls. Hope this never happens to any of your ladies but it’s good to be aware so you know what to do ❤️
@@BockBockBouquet Thank you! I can't find a video anywhere on cleaning a chicken's bottom who isn't sick or is a chick with pasty butt. She's not sick (9 months old), just gets build-up for some reason when the others don't.We put her in a kiddie pool this morning and soaked her for 10-15 minutes and worked off the build-up. She seemed to like it! As you know Brahmas have very fluffy bottoms! Handling her this way makes me feel better prepared to deal with bigger issues like the egg prolapse. Thanks for your videos.
Sometimes that happens to certain ladies, you handled it right! We had a hen we cut away some of her feathers to prevent it. She would always poop lazyly like the others squat and she would just go, while walking like whatever 😂 we think that’s why it would get stuck in her feathers. Thanks for watching ❤️
thank you for that information i have an egg bound chook but wasn't sure because i couldn't feel an egg, however after watching your video i'm positive she is egg bound will try your way and hope for a positive result too
Holy COW!! I've had chickens that were fine one day and dead the next, but I didn't know what was wrong and never figured it out. Now I know, and I know what to do about it. Good on you for hanging in there until she was done!
That can happen as they can hide their illnesses very well to not look weak to the flock. Also heart attacks can happen and drop dead with no symptoms beforehand. Thank you we are happy to see her healthy and happy today
Just reading thru the comments and I never even thought about heart attacks ! I'm about to get my first chickens (we're building the coop still) and this is all very good info to have. Thanks for sharing !
Oh my gosh❤️🤟You guys are just AWESOME 👏😘 Thank you so much! We have an egg bound hen at this very second and on our way to do this exact treatment so I can’t thank you enough. Will report after!
You’re so kind. My husband fell asleep with her in his arms wrapped in a towel after the epsom bath and massage. He dried her off real well also. He loves her. He named her “Siggy” from Vikings 🥲I feel so bad for him. She’s not doing so well. Thank you for caring.
@@marilynmainwaring9978 Aw I’m so sorry, they mean so much to us too. Try giving her some calcium. You can buy liquid or powder calcium or even crushing up tums can work. Do you feel an egg? Or is it a possibility there is one broken inside her?
@@BockBockBouquet We will definitely give that a try. We can’t tell really. It doesn’t seem like it so we aren’t sure if she’s actually egg bound. We don’t know what else it could be. The penguin walk but not pushing like trying to deliver an egg. So upsetting.
Poor girl. Thank you for sharing your story! Thank goodness she was ok. I do worry about this when we don’t get an egg everyday from our girls but now I know what to look for. Thanks!!
I just watched this to help my most favorite girl Nugget. There was a huge amount of blood this morning and her vent was prolapsed. I could feel an egg and thought I could help her but she passed away in my arms 😢 She was a Rhode Island Red and so beautiful. This is the first pet death I’ve ever experienced. It’s been a hard morning. I loved watching this before the whole crappy event though.
Thank you for your video. We came home last night to an egg bound chicken with a prolapsed vent. We did a few epsom salt baths, sugar water, lube and hemorrhoid cream. She did release an egg, but we can’t get her vent to stay in 🥴😢 I feel bad for our poor sunshine. I think it might be her first egg. She has had a rough couple of days. We are keeping her inside and separated from the other girls for now.
Liked & subscribed u. Very helpful & touching. Tanq 4 sharing. Is PASTY BOTTOM a sign of EGG BOUND ??? Or are they completely 2 different things. My hen has pasty bottom & with TH-cam videos help I learnt I’ve to clean it ASAP. will be doing it tomorrow. But better to ensure safety of my cuty hen’s & be prepared. Don’t want surprise make me feel anxious if it turns to be egg bound. FYI she’s been active, feeding well tho , no sign of lethargy & just 4 days back stopped being broody. God Bless. Thanks in advance..
I have 6 Golden Comets. I will admit to spoiling them but I am out with them multiple times a day for at least 15-30 minutes at a time. I have heard one of the hens struggling in the nest box and thought maybe it was just a large egg. As all of my chickens are the same type and same age, I will admit that I cannot readily tell them apart. 3 are larger and 3 are smaller. I would venture that the larger hens are 5 1/2-6 pounds and the smaller one are 4 1/2 to 5 pounds. I did notice that one seemed to have poop matted on her butt on Friday morning. I filled a bucket with warm water and decided that it wouldn't hurt any of them to take a quick "bird bath". I dipped them in up to their backs while holding them down across the top of the back. None were thrilled to go in but once there, they seemed to enjoy it, especially since when I took them out, I wrapped them in a towel to fry off and let them peck a while in the flock block. They all responded positively and it got their feet and undercarriage cleaned off. On Saturday, I noticed that one of the girls was covered in poop on her back side and strongly suspected that it was the same one as on Friday. I took her and put her in the bucket of warm water for about 20 minutes gently rubbing her back side trying to get it clean. Dried her off and held her for a while longer while wrapped up and, when seemed to get antsy, I put her back in the run and she seemed to be fine. Sunday was fine but only 5 eggs (not concerning). This morning, I got 5 eggs by 9 o'clock. I cleaned the coop tray as I do every morning and noticed that one of the hens had gone into the nest box. I didn't see her go in and it is dark. I didn't want to disturb her so I didn't try to look and see if it might have been the same one. Finished cleaning the tray and raked out the run and came inside for a cup of coffee. Went back out about 11 and gave the girls a treat and checked the box on the way back to the house. I saw an egg that I thought had been pecked. It was covered in really thick albumen all the way around. The shell wasn't visably broken so I decided to wash it and see. It took a little gently rubbing to get the albumen off and, to my surprise, I found an intact egg. Normally, the chicken eggs weigh between 1.9 and 2.4 ounces. This one weighed 2.1 ounces so it is my belief that maybe it is a regular egg. Is it possible that she tried but was unsuccessful at laying the egg and instead of a new egg having a shell develop, that the egg instead attached itself to the first egg? Unlike you, this is my first real foray into raising chickens (my grandparents had chickens and I used to feed them and gather the eggs from the hen house but that was well over 60 years ago). Any thoughts?
Thanks! I'm in trouble right now. It's full feeling in lower abdomen but I do not feel sure I'm feeling the contour of an egg but I think that is the case. Gotta go try letting her sit in warm Epsom salt water again.
Hi, one of my beloved chickens looked to be egg bound, had her vents outside her body and when I checked to see if she was egg bound there was no egg. She was trying to lay an egg out of her vent but I could feel no egg. I put her in warm water and rinsed the pooh and kept her in Epsom salt. I put some Castor oil around her vent. I am not sure if by tomorrow she will still be alive. My favourite chicken of them all! 🥲
Thank you, honey, for this video. I've had a few egg bound ladies, and I have massaged their bellies with good success, but thank you for pointing out a person could easily break the egg inside. I think I got lucky that never happened. What a lovely flock you have there. And you look so young---it's hard to believe you've been keeping hens (dinosaurs!) for 30 years, lol.
What a wonderful video!❤️❤️ I treat and care for my chicken, ducks, birds, fur babies like babies. I fear egg bound hen. I have 1 hen about 7 months old CREAM LEGBAR. She doesn't lay often. She is super active and healthy. I hope she won't encounter egg bound
We hope this never happens to you and think it’s rare, especially for cream legbar as they arnt as productive of a laying breed. This seems more common in production breeds that are bred to lay a lot of eggs like sex links and Rhode Island reds. Our cream legbars don’t lay as many eggs as some of our other chickens
Thanks for the great video! My poor chicken has been egg bound for about a week now, I'm doing all that i can do for her, ive been even giving her liquid calcium. I need to give her more Epson salt baths and do what you said about feeling for the egg again. I could use more tips too, i would love to hear from you
I’m sorry to hear that, are you sure she is egg bound? What are her symptoms? Is she still able to defecate? Is she separated from the flock? It may be a good idea to lower stress and have her in a private pen where she can try to pass the egg. Keep up the warm epsom salt soak. You may have to go in and get the egg but very carefully to not break the egg and if you do you must remove all broken eggshell pieces
Thank you for this video!! You did a great job explaining so I'll know what to look for if my hens ever get egg bound. Also, I noticed the feeder at min mark 5:52. Do you have a video for where you got that??!! I love it! And I really need at least one so other critters / wild birds can't eat their feed. Thanks in advance!
Thank you! Hopefully this never happens to any of your ladies ❤️ we did a full review and how to use the grandpa feeders in this video here. We save so much money on chicken feed now that we arnt feeding squirrels and sparrows lol th-cam.com/video/Z0Wc9ltBIOo/w-d-xo.html
I was thinking it looks like a trash bin but what if the chicken takes his foot off the lever and knocks its head. Or are they too smart to do that LOL
@@watchmansduty lol it’s not heavy enough to harm them the lid is very light, and once they step off they cannot reach it. That can only happen if they are leaning in from the side and if another chicken is eating and steps off, but the side guards for the most part prevent that. We have used these feeders for a year now and swear by them. No going back 😊
This literally was my scenario today. I got her in an epsom salt bath, gentle palpated the area with no success. She labored for about 2 hr. started the death rattle breathing and thennhad what appeared to be a heart attack and died in my arms. I'm not sure if she actually was egg bound but she had all the same behavior and symptoms that you described. I am totally devastated right now. I couldn't have gotten her to a vet on time. Start to finish was about 2 hrs. She was running around yesterday and dead today.
We are going through this right now, my chicken is not feeling good, her comb is droopy , poop all over her butt. She is was in the nest and never layed an egg, her abdomen is super hard and she walks wierd. I’ll update you, thank you so much for the video!
Good luck with your baby! Hope she gets better soon! Check for lice or mites too or their eggs on feather shafts. Feel her crop as well, is it hard or empty
@@livg.7751 at base of their neck on their chest above the breast bone is the crop. It’s where food is held to be digested. If empty it would feel like a waterballoon and after eating later in the day is can be very full like a softball. They should wake up with empty crops, if it’s still full they could have an impacted crop with a blockage
Ugh…I really hope I don’t have to deal with this. A friend of mine just lost a year old hen from egg bound. She passed the egg, it was very soft, but died shortly after. Great video, thanks!
We hope so too, it’s pretty rare, please don’t worry. But just be prepared in case. It’s good to always have an eye on your flock to you notice if they’re sick by their behavior. Sorry for your friends loss ❤️
Thank you, I did the same thing for my constantly broody silkie, in addition to lightly lubricating her shoot with vegetable oil to make it easier. I noticed she hadn't been laying since hatching her last brood and was getting lethargic
I'm at a loss. I'm new to this and learning as I go. I was given grown girls, not sure exactly how old, but all 4 lay an egg each day. But one girl has been acting very different for a couple days. She's eating and drinking and pooping but she's staying on her bed unless I remove her. She'll go do her thing then go right back. Side note, all 4 like to use the same bed so she's really interfering in the others routine. She's not showing the signs you said for egg bound, but could she be without the signs? Could she be the only one with mites? I heard that can make them act differently.
Haha thank you. I am in my 30’s and was raised, raising chickens. I had fallen in love at young age and they were my chore on the farm. I hope your bird is feeling better, let me know if you have any questions
Okokok, 1st I know nothing about chickens.. but I'm watching and right around 5:55 I seen the chicken put her foot on the lever to lift the lid and eat!!! WHATS THAT I NEVER SEEN THAT!!! AWESOME!!!
Oh yes! That is a feeder that remains closed until a chicken or our ducks step on it. These are designed so that squirrels, wild birds, and other rodents don’t eat all their feed. We had a lot of squirrel that would demolish all our feed in a day or two until we invested in these called Grandpa’s Feeders. It’s designed so that a squirrel or a sparrow is not heavy enough to lift the pedal. We started saving a lot of money on feed when we bought these, we now own three of them 🙂
Thank you, she's been sitting in the nest box for 2 days now and the rest of the flock has been attacking her. Poor thing, im going to try this because this is 2nd day now. Worried about her health and life.
I’m so sorry to hear that I hope she is doing okay ❤️ maybe try separating in her a dark area where she can be stress free and you can treat her. Away from pecking order stress. Is it possible she is just broody and trying to hatch baby chicks?
@@BockBockBouquet it worked like a charm thank you ❤ had her separated in the garage with a large dog kennel. She seemed much better an hour after I separated her. Again, thank you so much dear ❤
I have leghorn named grumpy bird who is egg bound and I have her separated in a dog cage right now. As her name suggests she isnt having any of that. I dont know what to do because any kind of handling makes her completely freak out and I dont want to make things worse for her while trying to hold her? She is still eating and drinking but looking pale from pushing I think? She still has plenty of strength and fight in her so Im not sure what to do right now?
Welcome to our channel! And the wonderful world of chickens, they are the best pets ❤️ we think you will fall in love with them as we have. Hopefully you never have to deal with egg bound chickens but I do recommend checking out our video on having a Chicken First Aid ⛑ kit, to be prepared for any emergency here th-cam.com/video/nyeU3U9njZU/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! Some chickens this will never happen to, but some production breeds can be more susceptible to it as they were bred to lay so many eggs. Making sure they have enough calcium supplements available can help but I wouldn’t worry too much about this happening in my experience it’s rare
Where do you get the covers or shade cloth you're using on your chicken run? We have ones on the top, but it would be nice to have some on the side of ours to keep the rain from wetting the run.
I love this story! So sweet.💗You have no idea what I've been thru today. But God bless my baby girl Betty seems to be rounding the corner. She hasn't stopped pigging out per her usual self for the last hour. She couldn't stand and barely hold her head up this morning. Still not sure what caused it. First time chicken owner, Tractor Supply sold me four chicks, come to find out three roosters and my sweet brave Betty. After researching for over a month I finally figured out they are Crevacour's?!! 100 eggs a year and not great mothers. Not sure what to do about it? Thank you for sharing! (Not sure about the 3 roosters 1 hen)
Hope she gets better! Usually if they stay alive by eating and drinking they will eventually survive whats ailing them. Sometimes taking them inside or separating to lower stress while treating can help. That can be a symptom of a number of things unfortunately and you’d need more information for try to diagnose. Aww that’s a very beautiful rare breed, meaning broken heart in French
Thank you very much for this story. I have been raising Poultry for 25-30 years and I (don't think) we've experienced this before. HOWEVER! A few weeks ago, 1 of my favorite Layers , was having some diarrhea. I checked her out and didn't see any other symptoms---- she was eating + drinking, but several days later, she passed. I will definetly be more diligent if this ever happens again! 😢🐔
Oh I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately without necropsy it would be so hard to speculate what took her as that can be a symptom to many things, or possibly not even related. As even heat stress can cause diarrhea as they are drinking so much water. We lost one of favorites recently too. Sending ❤️
They need calcium a large dose and it will help with the contractions of expelling the egg. It is extremely important to give calcium. Glad your girl survived.
My Hens tail has been down for 4-5 days, I’m new to Chickens and had No Clue! I Hope she’s Ok!!!! What do I use other than ky jelly? She keeps coming up to Me, and it feels asking for help. I wish I knew more about Chickens and signs and symptoms 😢😢😢😢
That's a fantastic idea ! Thanks for sharing
Thanks!! It's just me and the hubs and he's afraid of the chickens.
Omg! Best Hen Hack I've heard!! Thank you!!
THANKYOU! THAT IS SUCH A SMART IDEA!!❤👏👏👏
So smart! Thank you for the tip! So hard by myself
I just want to thank you so much! Because of your video, we were able to save the life of our little baby. She couldn't walk, she was panting, and could barely hold her little head up. Aww thank you for sharing with us ❤️ that is so heart warming to hear. I’m so glad your sweet girl is doing much better

Thank you.
This video is so important for chicken owners. This gave me some peace of mind ❤
What method did you use to dry her?
One of our hens died that way and today, thanks to this video, I was able to save one. Thank you ❤
just lost one to this - tried epsom salt baths - has anyone ever head of putting mineral oil into the vent?
@@thinkandgoaloe2432 awww so good to hear, glad there is other like minded people out there who love their animals ❤️
what is the cost of the Vet?
So happy to hear this! So glad she’s doing well now and that we could be of any help ❤️
@@BockBockBouquet Thank you.
She was pooping yellow liquidy poop and wasn't eating too much
I saw a TH-cam video that suggested using an extra strength Tums dissolved in a very small amount of water.
That push down feeder thing looks awesome
It is! We no longer feed the neighborhood squirrels and wild birds. We have a review video on the grandpas feeder here

Such a cute way of telling your story. How stressful it must have been for you two and how wonderful you worked together on saving her. Kudos to you both 👏 ❣
Thank you! It was very stressful, we are so happy to see her healthy and happy today 😊
I'm so happy to hear that you were able to help Mary though this and that she is back to her normal self!
Thank you! She gave us quite the scare we are so relieved

Thankyou!!
Loved this , very moving. You tell the story with passion and love.

i want to thank u sooo much... my gf called me, she had an egg bound girl.... i watched other videos, but yours touched me... i'd like to let u know that "lily" the white chiggum, is doing great tonight... i was able to get the 'leather' egg out of her... clean her up and put antibiotic ointment on her backside.. b4 today, i would not have had a clue what to do.... u r awesome
That’s such great news!! So happy to hear she’s doing better ❤️ glad our experience can help
Thank you for sharing and explaining how you helped ❤. I don’t that’s chickens yet, but I’m trying to learn all I can to prepare.

Great information in your video! I worry about this happening, so I’ve watched a lot of videos and read articles on what to do. Thank you for sharing!
Oddly enough, we were thinking recently how lucky we are that it had never happened to us, then it happened! Hope it never happens to you
Was researching what to do with vent gleet but found this and learned something new too! We love our three Brahma ladies☺️
The step-to-open feed tray just blew my mind, pigeons’ days of freeloading will be over! Gonna give my girl a salt spa and try this.

Holy cow. These chickens really be giving birth every day. 😳 Thank you so much for the info 🙏

Love you Kelly, you and your husband are the best, I just love all of your videos and the advice that you both share! Thank you both!
Thanks so much we are so happy if we can help!
Glad your ladies are doing better! Oh thanks so much! ❤️😊
Thank you and love your coop!!
@@BockBockBouquet yes for sure Egg bound, Just soaked her in some more Epson salt and gave her some more liquid calcium
Good luck with her hopefully she makes full recovery ❤️

I was thinking it looks like a trash bin but what if the chicken takes his foot off the lever and knocks its head. Or are they too smart to do that LOL
@@watchmansduty lol it’s not heavy enough to harm them the lid is very light, and once they step off they cannot reach it. That can only happen if they are leaning in from the side and if another chicken is eating and steps off, but the side guards for the most part prevent that. We have used these feeders for a year now and swear by them. No going back 😊
Hi, I like the container for the feed. Where can I get those?
I have epsom salts on hand for my toenail cutting routine. Warm water, epsom salts, soap for 25,min. Softens toenails for cutting.
Great tip! I always have epsom on hand even for human emergency. Came in handy when I sprained my ankle lol
Very sad about your loss😢
We are going through this right now, my chicken is not feeling good, her comb is droopy , poop all over her butt. She is was in the nest and never layed an egg, her abdomen is super hard and she walks wierd. I’ll update you, thank you so much for the video!
Good luck with your baby! Hope she gets better soon! Check for lice or mites too or their eggs on feather shafts. Feel her crop as well, is it hard or empty
@@BockBockBouquet crop??
@@livg.7751 at base of their neck on their chest above the breast bone is the crop. It’s where food is held to be digested. If empty it would feel like a waterballoon and after eating later in the day is can be very full like a softball. That's literally the best description I've ever seen
Glad she’s doing better ❤️❤️
Great video. Good storytelling. How in the world do you keep your run and coop so clean?
Thank you! We try and clean our run when it starts to look messy, usually every other week or so
I'm at a loss.
Thanks for the info, super helpful, my first time having chickens and my 14 week old pullet is egg bound 😭
I hope she’ll be okay! Has she ever laid before? That’s very young. Let us know if you have any more questions ❤️

@@BockBockBouquet awesome thanks! She is doing better, must have just been some kindof detox
Oh good to hear!

Im new with chickens. Beautiful birds. At 5:59 what kind of chicken is that behind you. Black and white one
Thank you. That chicken is a Silver Laced Polish Rooster
Thank you for your videos! I am new to chickens and find these so educational and informative!
Welcome to our channel! And the wonderful world of chickens, they are the best pets ❤️ we think you will fall in love with them as we have. Hopefully you never have to deal with egg bound chickens but I do recommend checking out our video on having a Chicken First Aid ⛑ kit, to be prepared for any emergency here

Great video 👍. What should I do to make sure that never happens to my chooks?
Thank you! Some chickens this will never happen to, but some production breeds can be more susceptible to it as they were bred to lay so many eggs. Making sure they have enough calcium supplements available can help but I wouldn’t worry too much about this happening in my experience it’s rare
Fantastic share.. thank you this may help me save my hen.
We hope your hen gets better soon!
Where do you get the covers or shade cloth you're using on your chicken run? We have ones on the top, but it would be nice to have some on the side of ours to keep the rain from wetting the run.
We purchased them from Amazon. I think they are linked in the description of the video
You are both so kind! Thank you for that.
Thank you we are so happy to see her happy and healthy and she’s been good since
God love you🥰
That made me want to cry !
Great job!!!!❤️
Thank you so much for saving her life 🐣🐤🐥🐓🌎🙏
Thank you very much for this story.
Sending ❤️
😢
Good work!
Thank you!
They need calcium a large dose and it will help with the contractions of expelling the egg. It is extremely important to give calcium. Glad your girl survived.
Thank you we are struggling with one of our hens now.
Hope she recovered quickly ❤️
@@BockBockBouquet She hasn't yet. Still egg bound for almost 2 days now. Gonna soak her tonight and try to move it. She is miserable and so are we.
So sorry, is she still able to poop? Hope you are successful tonight you may have to manually remove
@@BockBockBouquet She has only pooped very very little. I soaked you again last night and massaged her a bit underside but nothing yet.
