As an animator that got through art school with Richard Williams's "the animators survival kit", this tribute is everything to me. Love your channel, Hobbes.
@@matthewflores4183 if only that was the subjective experiance. unfortunately for me, and maybe not even the me that exists in your mind, but the me that exists in this flesh is dumbly serious. maybe because it makes it funnier.
There are many artists I admire for a variety of personal reasons, but for purely admiring the craft alone, I may never find an artist as impressive as Mr. Williams.
This was probably one of the best videos on animation I've scene ever. I have so much more understanding and appreciation of his works. Truly a legend.
This was amazing to watch. Richard Williams was mentioned on a recent episode of Animators React on the Corridor Crew channel. This taught me so much more about him. You've managed to condense his entire career in this video. Great work.

I went to college with Kevin Schreck, and vividly remember him working on "The Persistence of Vision." Really cool guy and one of a handful of classmates I regret that I fell out of touch with. He educated me on Richard Williams and The Thief and the Cobbler - something I'm really grateful he did. Anyway, this is yet another great video and a marvelous tribute to Williams. You have also turned me into a Brian Bennett fan between your selections on this video and the use of "Solstice" in the "Effects" video. Thanks for another great one Hobbes :)
This is really well done! Thank you for this great doc about a true master of a craft you adore. BTW if anyone is interested, there is a doc about Richard Williams and the turbulent production of the thief and the cobbler. It's called "Persistence of Vision".
it's absolutely criminal what was done to the thief and the cobbler. that stupid inner monologue stands as one of the worst examples of executive meddling.
R.Williams animation book helped me a lot when I was an animation student at Paris Gobelins school. Rest in Peace Richard, you will forever be a genius in my heart.
Nah I used to think that this channel was just lo fi amvs and I thought that was cooler. But this is an artistic kind of appreciation of the animation industry and its history. I'm both entertained and intrigued by what I'm seeing right now. Thanks for taking the the time to make this video. As always the music slaps.
I didn't even know i cared about western animation. This video is edited to perfection. Its such a shame that American animation companies have mostly become fully CG ones..
This is a masterful production. So reverent and informative, and really allows the viewer to indulge in the absolute incredible work of a master. The Thief and the Cobbler cuts are just breathtaking. I wish I could be half as good as he was. A beautiful talent.
Phew it’s been awhile since I’ve seen his work….. thanks so much for putting this together man!! 👏🏽 his work feels so dream like yet grounded it’s insane…
I'm happy that his movie, The Thief and The Cobbler at least got pieced together on TH-cam But I now realize how hard it must be to actually make something of your own. Gives something to think about personal projects, artistic or otherwise.
I just wanted to say that your videos mean so much to me. An endless source of inspiration, both because of the animation you showcase, as well as your editing, music and tone setting. If taste is a skill, then you're really one of the best on this platform. And this video in particular shows me that you have a very bright future creatively.
Please do more of this!!!!!!, this is the best inspirational thing to practice animation and drawing that I have ever seen in my life, this video just bring me so many ideas that I want to try. Thank you.
Thank you Hobbes, this made my day. While I am not surrounded by anyone who appreciates animation, I find it comforting to know such fans of the pure artistry and effort that goes into the medium exist (obviously) out there in the world and that I'm not just some crazy person >.
I've always been impressed by your ability to weave a story with nothing but smooth editing, excellent music choices, and of course the gorgeous visuals at the center. Words aren't needed, and that's the power of animation that you so artfully portray. This channel is criminally underrated, but I hope you continue to express your love of this artform through your videos. Also Dick Willie is the GOAT, peace bruther
recently i discovered this great animator, and now you launch this beautiful tribute. I love this art, and despite having chosen a different career, this passion will never leave me, each video relives this love for these fantastic stories and for all the emotion they gave me. All your videos inspire me, but this was the most beautiful of all, congratulations for always showing effort, care and above all, love for what you do, congratulations for another flawless video. Fame, money, nothing beats the feeling of a job well done, keep it up, thanks.
I honestly didn't know about Richard Williams until this video, but now I can see why he is so highly regarded. His drive to improve is inspiring. Thank you for putting together this wonderful video!
It’s a true shame we never saw a proper completion of *The Thief and the Cobbler* (much less anything in HD), as well as a proper blu-ray release of *The Musical Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy*
The recobbled cut of The Thief and the Cobbler can be downloaded in 1080p thankfully: recobbled.neocities.org/. The footage I used in this video is from that cut
Found this channel within the past few months, and I've resisted diving in to your channel so that I can savor your videos over a longer period of time. This being recommended to me, at 37 whole minutes long, makes me ABSOLUTELY GIDDY. Richard Williams was masterful.
I watched this video the first hour it was posted and every few months since. And every time I’m amazed by Richard Williams. And by this incredible tribute This might be one of the best videos on TH-cam. Certainly one of the best about animation. You paced it really well, since the topic is sort of a chronicling of Richard Williams career of animation, it’s fitting that you balanced the runtime between interviews and voiceover, but also you importantly let the audience appreciate the work itself. And you don’t overly bog things down with too many accounts of his personal life or the context of the 60s and 70s and what was going on at that time. It’s just about appreciating the art, and the passion that emanates from it. Incredible work, and your best yet. I only wish it would get more recognition with the current memes surrounding Williams’ work (Jovan Aftershave)
still watching it, i can't get rid of it. Everytime i have goosebumps when Richard speaks about Milt and at the ending. I can't wait to see your next video !
the sample of transcendence ( "kujaku") by nujabes ... i don't have the words , AGAIN and again and again THANK YOU !!!!!! for all your works , it is such a great resource , like a big bookshelf , full of the best references.
THANK YOU !!!! what a great video on one of the greatest ! I got chills for 15 minutes straits at the end ! you gave him a great tribute ! for me it's your best video and i can tell you i ve seen all of them a lot of time ( to train animation / warm up and just to enjoy ) . i must say it another time : thanks you so much for this job !
Everything from the music choice, the pacing and the editing was phenomenal. This is the type of content i live to experience. Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you for this wonderful video. I know this won't have as many views as a 3 minute short of sakuga cuts (which I also love), but I honestly believe every animation fan should watch it.
Thank you very much for this, thank you so much for making this. This video was beautiful not only did I learn so much from watching this, I feel so inspired. 🌷
I think the music choices in this were pretty good. Especially the use of Brian Bennett's "Image" at the beginning. Before I studied about Richard Williams and British animation in general, I never really gave much thought to the animation in television commercials, but now I have a lot more appreciation for them, especially with 2d animated commercials being so rare now (though I'm currently working on one.) I feel the same goes for industrial music too, like the stuff by KPM and Brutton Music or DeWolfe. Brian Bennett, Syd Dale, and all those guys were geniuses in their own way. I didn't really appreciate them though, until I started using their music in my own videos. Apparently, Kurt Vonnegut listened to a lot of industrial Musak while writing, so I guess I'm not alone.
This channel is art. Genuinely my favorite TH-cam channel. I am grateful for what you do. Thank you. Edit: Richard Williams says clout 😁 25:58 Also, name if song at 8:50?

Really nice video, I was feeling a bit burnt out doing my own work and was looking for some good animation to pick me up and this did it perfectly, a really respectful tribute to a legend of the craft

As an animator that got through art school with Richard Williams's "the animators survival kit", this tribute is everything to me. Love your channel, Hobbes.
I still own that book from school
It's a damn shame we'll never get to see his complete vision.
we can already appreciate what we ve got , even if its not finished its already a masterpiece
his complete vision: $-$
@@viardent8823 your complete mindset: 🤡
@@matthewflores4183 if only that was the subjective experiance. unfortunately for me, and maybe not even the me that exists in your mind, but the me that exists in this flesh is dumbly serious. maybe because it makes it funnier.
The final part showing “Prologue” was honestly beautiful. Perfectly edited to the score.
You've really outdone yourself. What an incredible tribute.
There are many artists I admire for a variety of personal reasons, but for purely admiring the craft alone, I may never find an artist as impressive as Mr. Williams.

Ahh... Richard Williams... the greatest in the animation game... and was such a kind soul behind it all.
I miss him..

You're use of jazz at roughly 4:20 against his explanations of his style and process is perfectly matched. The sound exactly fits the action.
This might be your best work honestly, Hobbes. And that's saying a whole lot.
Honestly... I much prefer it when the videos come in 5-ish minute chunks all 'digestible' like.
That however _does not_ mean I disagree *_; )_*
R.Williams animation book helped me a lot when I was an animation student at Paris Gobelins school. Rest in Peace Richard, you will forever be a genius in my heart.
I'm on my 20th re-watch already. I've never felt more inspired to draw then after discovering this. Thank you so much!
The music and presentation made it feel like taking a guided tour through Williams’ entire career! Absolutely great video!
Cg isn't necessarily bad tho
This is a masterful production. So reverent and informative, and really allows the viewer to indulge in the absolute incredible work of a master. The Thief and the Cobbler cuts are just breathtaking. I wish I could be half as good as he was. A beautiful talent.
Phew it’s been awhile since I’ve seen his work….. thanks so much for putting this together man!! 👏🏽 his work feels so dream like yet grounded it’s insane…
I'm happy that his movie, The Thief and The Cobbler at least got pieced together on TH-cam
But I now realize how hard it must be to actually make something of your own. Gives something to think about personal projects, artistic or otherwise.
I just wanted to say that your videos mean so much to me. An endless source of inspiration, both because of the animation you showcase, as well as your editing, music and tone setting. If taste is a skill, then you're really one of the best on this platform. And this video in particular shows me that you have a very bright future creatively.
beautiful homage to one of the greatest animators of all time, this video deserves more views.
Honestly, one of my favourite pieces of work you’ve produced, this was a joy to watch.
Please do more of this!!!!!!, this is the best inspirational thing to practice animation and drawing that I have ever seen in my life, this video just bring me so many ideas that I want to try. Thank you.
this man has a 3d engine in his brain
You have made a wonderful tribute documentary honoring the greatest of all animators/creators: Richard Williams!
seriously video needs at least 1 million of views,
This is truly a wonderful piece of documentary about animation I have seen
Thanks for this video
Wow! That was incredible! I'm so moved
@@HobbesSakuga cool! I’ll check it out!
And by this incredible tribute
This might be one of the best videos on TH-cam.
Saw this video because you put it on your homepage. This is a nice video that I'll definitely put on my favorites
still watching it, i can't get rid of it.
Best youtube video of all time you should edit all the major documentaries for big tv channels.
Everything from the music choice, the pacing and the editing was phenomenal. This is the type of content i live to experience. Thanks for sharing this.
omg I need to send you money and I can't neither in here nor Twitter! I love this documentary!! don't hate money like this XD

Thank you for this wonderful video. I know this won't have as many views as a 3 minute short of sakuga cuts (which I also love), but I honestly believe every animation fan should watch it.
Wow. That was beautiful. Excellent work, can’t wait for more of these.
This felt like watching a perfectly flowing documentary, Hands down some of your best work and deserves more views
This is a criminally underviewed video
Isn't this the guy who made "The Thief and The Cobbler" ??
Yeah
Yep
Wow, one of the best videos I've ever seen on youtube.
im incredibly moved. thank you for this tribute.
Great work of you (as always) , it's nice that you make a video wich go beyond anime !! Continue to share your love of animation ❤️
depply glad to watch material like this, I feel lucky that I found you.
Richard Williams and Brian Bennett, two fine England gentlemen, magnific combo.
Amazing video. Thank you very much!
Thank you very much for this, thank you so much for making this. This video was beautiful not only did I learn so much from watching this, I feel so inspired. 🌷
Beautifully made tribute! Looking forward to Mo Sutton’s new book on her husband next month!
Thank you.
Edit: Richard Williams says clout 😁 25:58
Also, name if song at 8:50?
