I'm glad the last scene 'No Boundaries, No Common Sense' didn't air. The pilot would have been far too early for that kind of conflict between Lisbon and Jane.
And then later they'd care too much about each other to say such hurtful things. So yeah, as much as it illuminates Jane's character, they showed those aspects without having to make Lisbon say it.
i really wish they would have included that kind of argument in another episode. these words are an unspoken aspect of their relationship, and both of their characters' deep natures. it deepens them and gives lisbon a lot of justice
Agree with you Fidelma. Further, what I like about their relationship is that she can be bossy because she has to but she also tolerate a lot from him because she likes him from the beggining. Lisbon saying hard words like this does not sound like her character.

But I also like the fact that except on few very justified moment, she is so soft on him that she got angry but then she forgives him and support him no matter what. It is cute. As a woman and feminist, I see the opposite. Jane acts like a rebellious kid most of the time. He plays with fire, he provokes people but fears the consequences (run to hide behind Lisbon). He is sensitive and vulnerable. The only moment he is brave is when he is hunting RJ. However, Lisbon is the boss. She manages her team, she protects and defends Jane, she is rarely scared even in bad situation, she helps him finding RJ and she tells Jane off for doing something stupid. She is definitely the strongest between them. She is the light at the end of the tunnel for him. An argument in the pilot would just make Lisbon seems insensitive regarding Jane ´s past (because at this point she does not know him at all and later we can see that she is a very kind and supportive person). That is what I feel. I like the fact that she got very very mad only 3 times during the show abd mostly at the end of season 6 because after all this time he is still unable to see that he is in love with her and make a move to her. (Sorry for my english, I am French)
I was even more excited when I saw him get out right by where the ID man picked up Jesse and Saul towards the end of Breaking Bad. What was the CBI doing in Albuquerque?
Perhaps it would be cool to have a series that is a prequel to the Mentalist, how Jane grew up, how he came to be The Mentalist he is today, there are a lot of interesting characters that could have screen time, especially the rival family of Jane's. Simon could be a narrator of the show. Sort of like Young Sheldon type of show.
Ugh to the last scene. Something catastrophic already happened to his loved ones 🥲 I was like ouch. Been there done that 😭 also him and Lisbon being like that in terms of pilot wouldn’t have felt right. IMO.
I looove the last scene, it's great to see Jane being affected at least once, and Lisbon also at least once letting out, this woman took too much for him, she deserves a medal, and estatue, I love that she did but I always felt like she deserved a lot more appreciation, it was no joke to be there for such a difficult and tramautized person, she truly was a good person cause she cared for him and for that she didn't vent that much, what she did here. And we know that Jane truly listens to her, he trusts her and cares for what she thinks of him but he always plays hard and put his poker face that she sometimes can see throught it but not always cause he is an expert so tosee him really affected by her words, because they are true is great.
I see a lot of people don't like the last scene but honestly, at this point, jane has been working with them for atleast 4 years, so keeping that in mind, it makes sense. But as a viewer, this in pilot would definitely not be a good idea as we are yet to be introduced to the characters properly. I do wish something like this had been aired further down the line....
the last scene is intense it speaks volume!!!! and it gives us idea about difference in character. and the character development after!!! it should be included!! ans the sound is RAW. like real time!!! not studio quality i heard sound from the freeway amazing!!! it seems like im there!
I remember reading the final scene in the pilot script. Amazing conflict, kinda sad that they didn't use it in the later episodes. It's definitely too much for episode 1, but it worked in the pilot.
The last scene was a really good scene for the pilot. It was straight up facts and a good place to start the show to exhibit how their team dynamic has progressed to them caring about one another.
In a way I like the last scene in this video, 3:58, as it shows more openly how fully aware Lisbon was of Jane's reckless behavior due to his pain and refusal to heal with the emotions, he has bottled up due to his guilt. She even foreshadows how Jane will create a tragedy of his own making which we see later on in the series. However, I am glad it was deleted as it was not the time or place for this between them in the Pilot. It worked better to showcase it at certain points over the series, subtly or not. Two examples being in episode 2.19 when Lisbon tells Jane she knew working with him would be a disaster and get her fired one day while Brett Stiles in episode 2.20 analyzes Jane's reckless behavior due to his trauma and guilt causes a lot of stress on others and the CBI including Lisbon. I have no doubt about the care and eventual love they build together, but the road to get there was a lot of ups and downs.
I'm assuming this scene occurs right after the opening where the woman shoots her husband. I understand why it was cut out. It's kind of at odds with the whole tone of it. I can't really explain exactly why, but it doesn't fit.
It seems to me like they were testing out how would it look like to do the show in a Dr. House style. But it didn't fit the characters and the story they were trying to tell. I think The Mentalist was written to have a happy ending between Jane and Lisbon from the begining, unlike Dr. House with Cuddy. Dr. House was aways meant to be a tragedy. The Mentalist was meant to be a rebirth or something like that. The argument is awesome, but it is hard to see them coming back from that, even more in the pilot.

It would have sent too many different signals like the entire series send signals about their relationship but that just sent something completely different.

These two are the most realistic- human characters I’ve ever seen in a detective show without being over dramatic. They’re both deep and conflicted and they’re very try well written. Every writer that Ever sold their soul to the woken agenda… take a page out of whoever wrote Lisbon’s character. That’s how you write a strong female character who works in a primarily male centric role. not by being a power hungry controlling maniac but by being someone who’s rational, calm and human.

i loved the last scene, but Jane's anger (and the way he let it out) was OOC.
It would've fit his pre-Angela life as a charlatan. Maybe they could have included it on that retrograde amnesia episode
