Bob Hope was not born in 1900. Bob Hope was born in England on May 29, 1903 about 4 years before John Wayne, 5 years before Milton Berle, 2 years after Ed Sullivan, 7 years after George Burns, 9 years after Jack Benny, and 13 years after Groucho Marx.

Because he's a nice person and not stuck up, he was showing his appreciation towards one of the workers!

But Bob was great and some jokes fell flat and he would milk that too... Some clown named bandwagon above says they booed him, never happened...

I read a recent biography of Bob Hope, and it said his appearances, like this one, were strictly scripted, especially as he was getting older. Johnny Carson didn't like how scripted his appearances were on the Tonight Show. But this conversation with David Letterman appears natural and funny, not just Letterman setting Hope up for jokes. It's a great clip. Thanks for posting.

Bob was always prepared. .Johnny knew where to go.. no one was scripted per se. He always had a series of solid material, but it just flowed naturally.

By 1985 Bob Hope must have been the most experienced talk show guest in TV history. I can't see him needing a script but it's obvious that the conversation topics are reviewed before he comes out. From there Bob can just wing it.

Is that Mark Knopfler at the end?

I love these candid interviews where Bob Hope isn’t just reading from cue cards. He had so many great stories to tell.

When you have had Bob Hope and Johnny Carson on your late night show during it's run you had the best.

Reverence was never part of Letterman's style in the early years.

Bob Hope was an MKULTRA handler. Read Thanks For The Memories by Brice Taylor. He also was a sex addict, and mean guy. Another one about him was The Secret Life Of Bob Hope by Arthur Marx

This was back when Letterman sat in a "high chair" while the guest chair was cut down low, making Letterman look a foot taller than Hope here. Letterman's tall but Hope's not exactly a dwarf, he was a big guy himself. Hey, isn't it spooky that both Hope and his wife lived to over a hundred years old. His wife was 102. WTF were they doing?? I know Hope's mother lived to be 100 but it's bizarre that his wife also lived so long. What were they doing??????

In the 80's, sitting in with Paul and the band was the "hip" thing for big-name rock/pop/jazz musicians.

Hope was born in 1900 but took 3 yrs off his age at the start of his career, so he was 85 during this interview!

+ Jerry Jaye I've read about he possibly altered his birth year.especially when a writer heard in the mid-40's heard him say,it's not easy for a forty fix year old man to keep up with these young women, because of his reputation as very notorious skirtchaser.

    • @essessessesq

You're right. Grouch Marx's son wrote a biography of Hope describing his romances.

@@BBQFanNo1 i should have given my source,,,,it is common for show-biz people to lower their ages to be younger....Groucho Marx's son wrote a biography of Hope and produced evidence that Hope was actually 3 years older than he said....And Hope had a motive to lessen his age early in his career....But Marx had NO motive to say that Hope was actually 3 years older than he claimed...as we know, stars do it all the time

Nobody had the bad taste to recall the moment at which Hope was openly booed by the grunts in Vietnam: He was to the comedy of the war what Nixon was to its negotiation and what Billy Graham was to its husky religiosity. Jokes of Bob Hope were those keep things going at golf clubs or Rotary dinners: They are harmless and sentimental and have no intrinsic humor. A Bob Hope joke was no laughing matter: It was a bland attempt at what we would now yawningly call inclusiveness.
