Nice job on the ditch, we had a neighbour fill in a huge water channel mouth, it caused water 2 feet deep 30 meters wide to come through our place, digging in sloppy mud is not fun but rewarding once done. I tell a lot of people to put the plastic water channels with the metal grid on top, used in driveways etc, put them around the perimeter of the house, it should stop all that water running through your home, hope your hard work has helped stop it too! Also after all your digging could you not put a pipe, solid or soak away pipe, in your trench and then cover it over for next year? I have found most swales dont do much apart from during the rain to help stop erosion .... problem being is the ground will still dry out by the time late spring is here, being Portugal is built on bed rock there is never much depth underground for the water to soak in, it soaks down to the bed rock and moves off anyway.... i also think this is why we get so much surface water run off, hilly land and not much below the surface to absorb all that water. Merry Christmas to you both
Hi Alex thanks for such a helpful comment you are right about the land drying out quickly here. At the moment we are waiting to see how it works before we do anything more permanent. We have been thinking about French drains around the house however the public road and geography complicates it it has been suggested we can put the French drain inside the buildings Dan @ Nearby veggies
@@NearbyVeggies Your welcome! I would want to keep the water out these xisto houses, like ours is, as any moisture in the wall will make your walls go black and mouldy and make the house very damp. I have some bedrock at ground level next to the house, you can cut a channel into it with a disc cutter, use that as it is as french drain or put those plastic channels into the slot you cut, if thats your issue. stay warm n dry🙂
@@danwilkin3031 Dan, highly advise against interior french drains. You really want to intercept the water before it reaches the building. You'll invariably introduce moisture inside the structure and unless you install continuous vapor barriers (not easy in an existing stone building), you can create unhealthy humidity levels.
Good job, smart thinking !!!!! as they say, be careful what you ask for, Portugal wanted rain, and so they got rain, Lisbon sure had way more than they could handle, they got floods everywhere. This reminds me of when I was around 8 years old, we had the same type of atmospheric river go through Lisbon, lots of flooding and damage, but we survived.
A generous advice, by letting water flow off you are slowly depleting the soil quality. Instead dig some water pits , store the water and see the magic results in Summers
Happy birthday, Dan 🥳 So much for tidying up 😄. Congrats on a acquiring your vise. Sorry you've had flooding, bit it's better to know where water comes in under your structure than not knowing. And it's terrific when flooding can drain away. Our big city house has flooded several times during what were supposed to be singular storms of a century. Now most things that must sit in the garage is raised several inches off the floor. Good work with your swales and berms. The Dutch Farmer (in Portugal) plants on their berms to help stabilize them.
Dan says thank you 😊. He loves his new tool and of course the tidying never went beyond clearing the bench. 😂 We will be planting the berms as soon as we get a chance. Have a great holiday. 😊
This is something we have had to deal with this year also. Hard work but rewarding when you see it work. We have our trench and natural pond dug out, ready for landscaping next spring. Lots of love from Co. Meath, Ireland 🎄❤️🎄
He looks right rugged and manly to me, he does. 💪 And my hubby is wondering if the little lady has a twin sister. Not to worry, all is fine on the home-front ... just this couple is wonderful to watch. Somebody used the term eye candy, not that we judge people on their looks.

People are reporting heavy rainfall in Portugal over a number of weeks. You are not alone in experiencing extreme rainfall. In Wales we had eleven inches in the first week of December. That’s three times the monthly norm. We have then had below freezing going to minus ten for three weeks. Lucky no heavy snow but challenging to keep warm. My bees are wrapped up but my allotment plots are water logged in places. Good luck with your endeavours.
It was great to see you dig your drainage channel out, although I felt sorry for you squelching in the mud. My land has gone from hard baked clay with huge cracks in it, to a squelch bog. A bit of respite from the rain this weekend, then more to follow. At least the barragems will be filling up somewhat. Always a silver lining. 😊
Those diversions & berms should really help move water to where it's wanted. Looks like you need one around outside your garage & maybe gutters too. It's great you have made friends to have coffee with. It's all part of self-care. Isolation isn't always healthy.
What’s with all this rain we are getting? 🤷🏻♂️ I feel your pain. We were hit 2 weeks ago here in southern Italy. Our whole veggie garden and hoop house were completely flooded. The rain finally stopped and we are now in the cleanup phase. Luckily for us the garage and houses were ok.
We sort of created the problem by diverting water onto our land and creating a pond which is draining a bit too fast. Overall our property is in great shape despite the rain. The new drainage channel and berms and swale are already doing wonderfully well. So sorry to hear you had a lot of damage on your farm. Good luck with the cleaning up.
@@NearbyVeggies Thank you! Cleanup is going well so far and surprisingly enough most of the plants actually survived. No major damage just had to move all my conducting to be above any future flood points. 😊 Good luck with your cleanup too. 👍🏻

Thanks Monica. It’s a blessing to see the water flows in full wet weather conditions as it gives us time to see the challenges before we invest in the rebuilding. The drain is working fabulously. 👍

Really could use one of those (relatively) cheap Chinese mini excavators with a hydraulic thumb. Very handy machine for a property like yours.
Very handy indeed 👍
There are UV resistant tarps available. All those woodchips will help you build up your soil so more water can be held.
