    You both are just like us: on every visit to a plant market we just cannot help bringing a couple of them…
    Just a remark regarding the 30 cabbages you planted: I believe they are of the sort “penca” (the traditional Christmas cabbage in Portugal) and they can get really big (in diameter not in height), so you may need later to pick some before the season to make place for the others. But it is all part of the fun, to discover new plants and traditions!

    It's better to plant the tamarillo in a sheltered area, under a big olive tree, if your area has sever frost. I had a few tamarillos in the Algarve, but a cold winter killed them all. The couves you planted might be too close to each other, as they can get very big.

    • @NearbyVeggies
      @NearbyVeggies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the tips, Enrique. The tamarillo is quite close to a big olive tree so we’ll have to wait and see. We get a good bit cooler here than the Algarve. 🥶🤞

      I’m a total flop when it comes to resistance in the nursery. I go there, determined to get what I went for and whether I find it or not, home I go with more than I have time or energy to plant. We had one male and one female pistachio tree in our 1/2 acre garden in Gawler, South Australia. They grew beautifully there. The pistachios were delicious. Our climate was very similar to yours, but we had less rainfall - about 460ml per year. Best of luck with them. Our only problem was the cockatoos. We had to net the female tree several weeks before harvest, or we would not have had a crop. At least you won't have a cockatoo problem. Of course I have no idea if any of the local wildlife in Portugal like pistachios. 😊

    It’s going to be amazing. My best ground covers this year were strawberries (yes in the blistering Valencian sun) and sweet potatoes, massive crop, still digging them. Pumpkins and luffa. The alficoz cucumbers did better than other varieties and are surprisingly crunchy and delicious. One thing I’m doing religiously is chopping and dropping to protect the soil, I see you are mulching trees, but all bare soil just turns to dust. I also had good success with a green manure of alfalfa, Phaselia, mustard and broad beans, the mustard and broad bean tops provided greens early in the season. I also have lots of flowers to attract pollinators. I’m hoping to start an orchard soon.
    Excited for you, all the best 🍀

    • @NearbyVeggies
      @NearbyVeggies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Monica, we are feeling very positive about the orchard. Our pumpkins did well and we harvested a couple of useable luffas. We chop and drop everything and our trees are carefully selected for chipping. We only clear where there is a native sapling to give it light and space to grow.
      We’re planning a little tour of our mini cork oak forest soon and a look at our native trees too. Our strawberries have come back to life ( they’re under young trees but the physalis has been amazing and is an amazing drought tolerant fruit.

    Olá! Nice to see that I’m not the only crazy about trees! We are also are trying to make a food forest, a lot of effort to water them, and they end up dying in the end of summer… need to persist in the mulching… do you think pine bark is better than wood chips? Thanks for sharing your good energy and humor with us! Keep us updated with the trees tours all seasons! Boa semana!

    • @NearbyVeggies
      @NearbyVeggies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bom dia, Catarina. The watering was touch and go this year. We have used lots of wood chip as mulch. It breaks down quicker than pine bark and helps to build soil. This summer we didn't put anything through the wood chipper due to machinery restrictions and fire risk. We're lucky enough to have found a local supplier for the bark so this has been really useful. The bark takes a long time to break down and is a good weed suppressant. Both have their benefits. I think the chipper will be coming out to work soon now that the weather is a bit cooler.
      Boa semana.

    It will take you a decade to get a proper food forest yielding the food you want. I would have taken the 60 Xmas cabbage. They would be food to freeze if you do not eat them all.

    • @NearbyVeggies
      @NearbyVeggies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Luckily, we can grow cabbage all year round in this part of Portugal and we didn’t have a freezer back then.
      Judging by neighbours trees we should expect significant fruit from our trees in about 5 years. Plants grow really fast here.
      It’s been quite surprising 😊

    I think the price is cheap...here in Houston a small avocado tree, peach, guava...etc cost 95 dollars, 75 and so on...and no warranty if the tree die...ouch

    • @NearbyVeggies
      @NearbyVeggies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally fruit and nut trees here are about 3 euros for bare root and 7.50 - 10 euros for hose in pots. So you can see why we were shocked.

      @@NearbyVeggies oh I got it now...yes, is like me going to the big hardware store and find the perfect orange tree and then i get the electric shock of my life...99 dollars for a 5 gallon tree less than 4 feet tall...

    Also, how much did it cost for a truckload?

      It is a waste product from pallet making. We paid €23 for a truck load.
