- EPISODE #129
I'm off to go and visit one of my favourite places in the whole entire world... its a place that makes the most incredible pastries, and no I'm not not dramatising it... these things really are unbelievable, if ever you get a chance to go... make sure you visit Pasteis de Belem for the best pastries there ever was.. the famous pastel de natas! But be careful... I know first hand, they are highly addictive.
Anyway, I travel a 150km round trip just to eat these things... but the journey turns out to be far from straight forward. Recently with me it seems that drama is always around the corner...

As a Portuguese it’s special to see you representing our country the way you are doing, even if the weather was not cooperating. It means a lot!!! Great that you are enjoying being here. We are surely happy of having you around ;)
Trying to embrace the Portuguese ways the best I can… so happy to be here!
As a Portuguese person living in Australia, I can say I am so keen to come back and do some rides. 🇵🇹🇵🇹
Matey, watching your videos is one of the reasons I am cocking my leg over a bike again after many years!! Keep them coming and keep smiling!!
Ahh man that’s amazing… keep pushing those pedals mate and enjoy! Thanks for watching! 😁🙏🙏🙏
I'm surprised your good lady let you back in the house. I didn't see you bringing her any of the Portuguese delights back from your trip!!!!!! Your a brave man indeed Thomas!!!! 😂
Question: When it just starts to rain, you're cycling along a main road and the drain covers have the bars running (dangerously) in the same direction as the road. Is this standard in Portugal? Here in the UK the bars are perpendicular to the flow of traffic so that they don't swallow up your front wheel.
As an American with limited resources to travel for biking adventures thank you for bringing the beauty of Portugal to the bicycling community
🙏🙏🙏
Mate you're living the dream cycling life I wish I had. I spent part of my childhood in a place called Linda-a-velha near Lisbon, so I know Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra quite well. I always dreamed of cycling that coast road towards guincho and into Sintra, but alas I moved to Manchester before getting into cycling. Family have either passed or moved away, so I don't get the opportunity to go back. One day though, I'll fulfill that dream. P.s. I've eaten so many pasties de nata over my lifetime, I'm sick of them 😂 much prefer pasteis de côco anyway 😋
I’m loving the tutorial. Come to Portugal, see the sights, get soaked, get cold, get lost, night time wet riding without lights and the reason why savvy riders use Wahoo head units.
Yep I messed up!
Wahoo over Garmin any day :)
Hey Thomas, beautiful ride mate! I suggest the Wahoo ELEMNT as a replacement for the Garmin-button based, super long battery life, and after 5k miles it’s never once failed on me or stopped working. Love from the US!
Agreed! I have the ROAM and it's fantastic!
I love those little beauties. Had 2 at a cafe on the rebellion way, but my pigginess was punished with 10 miles of indigestion after I'd enjoyed them. Worth it though.....
Thanks Thomas...I live in a Portugese neighborhood , and I am going to find the pastries you were eating ! Be well !
Enjoy! 🙌
I also suggest the one under the castle in the centre, Santo António :)
The quality of the roads (not a pothole in sight) and the much less volume of traffic (like non existent) is reason enough to be there let alone the weather (unlike the UK) 👍👌💪
Hammerhead Karoo 2, I've replaced my Garmin with a wahoo, and the Wahoo with the Hammerhead. Never looked back
I vouch for the HK2 as well. One of the best cycling computers I’ve ever own. No problems with in a year. Battery last ages, which is one of the only things most ppl would complain about a year before I got it. The customizable profiles and all the settings is just beautiful. And I haven’t really used it to it’s full potential yet. Also no problems when it’s raining.
Watching from Australia, great video, thank you for the effort.
I got caught like this in the rain 300mm deep water across the road type Aussie rain!
Your distance was epic!
This is Portugal in winter - sun, then rain, then hurricane, then rain again, then sun again, and so on in a circle. But how beautiful it is to spin along the ocean. And it’s great to look at the route I also ride from the outside
Highly recommend the 840 it’s touchscreen but has the buttons as well so best of both worlds 😊
Excellent....thanks Thomas...
Nice one Thomas - stuck indoors in the U.K. so brilliant to see someone riding outside with that scenery.
Loving the new black bike and kit!
your videos are really interesting. I appreciate the background music and your commentary. It’s easy and kind of boring if you make a video where you just have a nice ride to the bakery, eat something and then ride back home. your videos always have some dilemma going on which makes it really interesting and you have a good attitude and push through the ride. I visited Lisbon last year and didn’t get to ride and your videos are making me jealous that I did not. hopefully you can make some more videos through the winter time. cheers.
Thomas, Garmin rain tip: When raining you can lock the garmin screen (press and hold power button) and use your climb shifter buttons to change the garmin pages. And if it's the edge 840 you can also use the buttons like the other gps with buttons.
I used to do that… but I recently had the shifter hood buttons changed to shifting… 🤣🙈
Nice one , I THINK. least the Di2 didn't run out too😂
rear light lasted so that was pretty important. you stayed positive and wish we had 18degrees back in uk
Great choice I have fond memories of these in Belem simply the best!
Was there in October, and rode these same roads. Absolutely loved it then, and am loving seeing you experience the beauty of that area.
Keep the content coming Thomas, sorry I had to laugh when you said it was raining as I knew the next comment would be I haven’t got my jacket!! Looked like a special ride though despite the weather.
Living in Toronto, we have some delicious pastel de nata as we have a big Portuguese community (among many other places) but I've been to Pasteis de Belem and it was awesome. Watching them make them too is a treat.
One of my favourite videos yet!
You should reach out to Wahoo. Maybe they can get you a Kickr bike or trainer, HR strap and head unit for a sponsor. Great videos. I love to see Portugal and the positive vibes.
Great video my friend, bur with your luck i wouldn't be ridimg in the dark !
Even with hindred front &rear lights!!!!🤣🙈
You should visit the cathedral up the street from the bakery. It’s still one of the most incredible places I have ever entered.
Get a Wahoo! Dude.
I went to Pasteis de Belem years ago and got addicted to those wee buns over that weekend. We bought boxes of them. Delicious
Sooooo good! 🤤🤤🤤
well done mate; endurance cyclist = wahoo elemnt, superior function, battery life and no touch screen, your ride reminded of the typical garmin nightmare I used to go through with rain or sweat dropping on screen during climb, changing screens or freezing, we rely on them so much haven't had an issue since ditching garmin. Also you should carry a plastic Rain Ponchos, very light/small, good back up.
Great vid as always. Really enjoy your uploads. Thanks for being an inspiration and motivation.
Thomas, fog and Sintra, go side by side!!!
Nice to see you trapped by Pastéis de Nata!!
They’re the best! 😁🙌
Belem got some tasty pastels, but can recommend Nata Pura in Sintra if you are ever in need of a coffeestop!
My go to in Sintra is Fábrica da Nata… 🤪🤘
Thanks for the winter inspiration, bro. Even though you’re spinning up in much better weather than us here in UK, your passion is admirable. Love this channel 💪🚴🏽♂️🤙🏼
another great video video just goes to show the weather is not always on your side buddy till next time keep the video coming Wayne
those pastries look well better than ours over here mate! great ride
Epic ride. You know you have to go back to that climb now on a clear day to check out the view
I would recommend you a wahoo instead of garmin 😉. It just works and is easy to use.
Thank u for sharing our treasure pastéis de nata!!❤️🥰🥰you very welcome!! Watching from UK🇵🇹🇬🇧
They’re a treasure alright! 🤤🤤🤤
Epic adventure ride with highs and lows 👍
I love Portugese pastry for sure. It doesn't get talked about enough
Nice Emonda. There is nothing like a Trek. Great bikes.
You got that right!
I was in Lisbon earlier this year, picked up some pastel de nata for the first time after visiting Portugal many times before, hands down rhe best pastries as you say 👌👌 Loving the content, have a good Christmas!
Hello, try subida do Dragao at the right side when you climb from Malveira to Pé da serra.its a steep climb but short 600 metres, but the view at the top its amazing, best view in to cascais and guincho.
Riding in the rain is just the pits. Faster you ride the less you can see. You wanna wear glasses because it stops grit flicking into your face but then you can’t see anything. Squinted eyes the whole way.
Nice one Thomas! Defo one for you to do again in summertime! I reckon one of your favourite groups is wet wet wet! lol 😁(sorry had to get that in) Ride safe!!
Yeah I’ll be back for sure!
Delta coffee! my fav one in Portugal 👍
Quite a wet adventure! OMG the description of the custard tarts had me drooling literally hahaha Thanks Sorry about your Garmin....I just bought a new Wahoo Roam V2 during BF sale haven't tried it yet will be my first try of Wahoo. I was leery about the Garmin touch screens especially in the rain & you have kinda sealed it 😉 Glad you made it safe & sound bro! Thanks for the video adventure take along...Take Care!
WOW You are amazing💪 ride in rain :)
“When we came to this beach , it’s why me and Richard fell in love “ I thought you were about to saying
Who’s Richard..? I hope my mrs doesn’t find out about him…
Really enjoying your content. Hope you are settling in Portugal.
Here we go 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
🤤🤤🤤
And you need Visit Madeira Island with Madeira Cycling
The famous Sintra Mist.
Im so disappointed, i thought this was going to be a ride to greggs 😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Another great video ❤
I like the very nice sun glasses.
Hi Thomas! Nice vid as usual 🙏 just a head’s up: please be extra carefull on pt roads. As you’ve probably found out, pt drivers aren’t what you would call biker-friendly. Be safe, brother. 🙏
Mate… I’m from Essex. The drivers actively try to hit you there! 🤣
Bravo Thomas!😄💪
So following on from my "get a mechanical group set" comment last week, get a "wahoo" cycle computer this week. Only buttons, no touchscreen. I have both. You do have one advantage though I.e. the weather! ... although 11c in Scotland today which is quite mild for this time of year. Enjoy watching these every Sunday morning 😉
Yeah I think you’re on to something there… 🤪
Wahoo Roam for you sir ❤
18 degrees…..jammy sod!❤🚴🏼
Well, it was nice whilst it lasted… 🤣
@@TheCyclingTattooist 😂😂
Well done Tom love every video you put out how to you find it living in a different country/ do you find the language a big barrier?
In Sintra you should try travesseiros da Piriquita.😂👍💪its a great boost to a long ride.
I’ve heard it’s amazing!
Oh F me! You did not just go to one of my favorite places in Lisbon, I was born there and went often to that shop. Now I’m angry 😂 anyway, back to my Canadian snow.
Could be cool to see a new intro vid with footage from the area you live and best areas you've ridden in. Same song tho.
Great video. What trek bike have you got now ?
Wahoo Roam Thomas lad 😜👌
Great 🫵🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nothing like a little pastry errand 😂 don't want it to sound like a daft question but are there any gluten free options on your stops? Ta x
Hello Tomas, How far is your home from that bakery and what Garmin do you have. 👍🏽🇲🇽🇵🇷
About 80km… 😁👍
Off to Sa Calobra today after watching your episode
Enjoy! 😁🙌
Nice video, but curious to know how do you not check the weather app before you head out? That’s a no brainer for me.
Since when does a weather app tell the truth..? 🤣👍
Do that in Ireland and you’ll be disappointed daily. 😂
Máquina Thomas!!!!!
Happy day))
Looking good Thomas 🇵🇹🧇
At least your battery didn’t run out 😂
Hi Thomas what seat are you using on the new bike? 👍
I bet those white socks went in the bin along with the Garmin 😂😂
RIP! 🤣
makes me want to visit Portugal
You need to organise a group ride with your fans from the North of Portugal eheh
That a good idea! Come to the north, really different scenery, I’m sure you will love it. Easy to find interesting mountains as well (or hard not to find them)
Good on you! Next time take with you rain jacket and working GPS : )
sick vid as always! those new garmins are dog sh1t. I ditched my 840 and went back to the 1030 which I've never had a problem with.
I don't mind getting wet so long as I'm not cold as well 😊
Always enjoy your vids. Garmin dead? Time to ride naked! I have for a few years now and it’s quite liberating.
Why not bring 2 of those custard tart back to Rache?
Bom dia! 🤘
BOM DIA! 😁🙌
Welcome to garmin club! ahhaaha
Ny Wahoo doesn't have a touch screen to break. It's all buttons, so much better.
🤣👍
Hope you took one of those pastries back to your partner, glad you charged your DI2
man, it's easier to quit drugs than pasteis de nata, welcome to anonymous pasteis
You can say that again… I’m a junky! 🤣
Just a quick one, pastel de nata and pastel the Belem, are not exactly the same and let me tell you that a "good" pastel the nata is better then the pastel the Belem. Obviously, both are very enjoyable.
I’ve heard this… and I’ve tried A LOT since being here, but I can’t tell the difference between the two and I certainly haven’t had anything better than the ones at Pasteis de Belem, I don’t believe that exists… 🤣👍
So did the garmin get thrown in the bin.
How is the adaptation from imperial to metric going Thomas?
Sack the Garmin off and get a Wahoo .. best thing I ever did..
I think I might… 🤪
If the Garmin is going in the bin you'll have to change your intro rap. The new ones aren't any better, I was tempted to throw my new 840 against a brick wall.
This is literally the only reason I’ve kept it so long… definitely new intro will be on the way soon! Or I’ll just bleep out the word Garmin out of spite! 🤣
Portuguese lesson for the week, 1 pastel de nata, 2 pastais de nata (y) De nada ;-)
Are you mocking my pronunciation..? 🤣
@@TheCyclingTattooist Pasties plurals first, we can get onto pronunciation later ;-)
Talk to me about Portuguese chicken…
Go to Nando’s if you want that shit… 🤣
