  • Newchapel Junction - A Large O Gauge Exhibition Layout

    This is Newchapel Junction, a large O Gauge exhibition layout as seen at Ally Pally for the London Festival Of Railway Modelling in 2022. With a mixture Southern and Great Western trains running there's plenty of variety on this huge layout with something always going on to keep people entertained.
    Trains leave the busy station of Newchapel Junction and head out onto the large circuit where operators leave them running or direct them off onto the branch line towards Sidport Regis, a smaller terminus station. All the while more passenger trains are being prepared for dispatch or good trains are being shunted in the yard so it's safe to say Newchapel Junction is a layout where something is always moving.
    With it's fully interlocking signalling and block instruments in use and all on display to the public, this is less of a model railway and more of a miniature working railway network. Newchapel Junction is a fantastic layout and one that everyone can enjoy regardless of whether you like to see the operators at work or just want to watch the trains race part.

    This looks like a really fun layout! I love how the trains will leave station going one way, and come back into the station going the other way. It makes it feel as if it's a busy mainline junction with a lot of traffic, even though the "mainline" is just a circle of track. Nice video!😃

      Yeah definitely keeps it interesting for anyone watching as if shunting and marshalling trains isn't your thing then there's always trains running round the loop. The second branchline off the main loop is a nice feature too! Thanks for watching 😃

    What a fun O gauge layout. This is great size for people to enjoy especially kids. I need to learn how to do the wiring for signals and lights because the layouts look so much better with them than without.

    Very impressive, you don't see many 0 gauge roundys and they have done it properly, the detail of the signals and especially the locos and the rolling stock is fantastic 😀

      Absolutely! I’d love to have O Gauge but I’m already tight on space! I think if I was starting my Garden Railway today I’d probably go for O Gauge instead! Thanks for watching 😃

    do they run the passenger trains on timetables and appropriate headway spacing and if the goods tains are on a schedule are they run accordingly. do the passenger trains stop at stations ? otherwise a drop dead lovely layout.

    Do they really run engines that big backwards -- here in the days of steam the terminus always had a turntable. There was even a triangle turn around on several small branches.

      Yeah, smaller tender engines like the T9's would often be used on small British branches, where they often only had small runaround loops. In the US, branches often ended at wyes or turntables.

      Yep, as Will said on small branchlines it was fairly common in the UK. Often the terminus stations wouldn't have space/facilities for a turntable and because the speeds were lower than the mainline anyway it wasn't much of a problem. It's practice that can still be seen today on my heritage railways around the country. Thanks for watching 😃

      @@willbreckinridge8010 LMAO how barbaric. I used to love going to my local station because it was a peak hour terminus. Two tank engines Ab 4-6-2, 4 carriages, two of them 1/3 breaks sitting there most of the day. They would leave at 3pm and 3-45pm.
      The run down to the City was maybe 40mins. All stops (9) back by 4-15 and 5-30pm respectively. The sad thing was the 3pm train was always empty. The 4-15 was full of school kids and the 5-30pm was the first workers train - full of smoke and the odd drunk. The main station was on a loop (no turntable needed) but the terminus had a small table right off the end of the platform. The main service went through to two other stations further down the line. In all I think there were 4 turntables on the line and a triangle turn about on another branch line. don't think I ever saw an engine going backwards until the diesels came along.

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy -- That was a different time. Now with EMU its done in almost half the time. All the infrastructure is gone and the land sold off. It was sort of mainline too so they had to move at normal speed. Lucky to have one of the WAb 4-6-2's in working preservation.
