    We’ve had plenty of requests for a review of a more professional grade lavalier microphone so let’s have a listen and a look at the Countryman B6. This mic was used in the recent Hobbit movies on Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Ian McKellan as Gandalf. I’d like to thank B&H Photo for providing the mic for us to test over the last month. They’re always great to work with!
    The Countryman B6 not only sounds great, it is a very versatile option for miking. It comes with three different protective caps that fit over the capsule to provide protection from moisture, but also allow you to sort of fine-tune the sound of the mic. The most common case for this is when you want to hide the mic under the shirt of your talent. In these cases, the shirt will cut some of the high frequency sound. Countryman provides a crisp and super crisp cap to help compensate for that. Of course they also include the flat response cap if you’ll have the mic outside of the clothes.

      They are rated as the best soundproof blankets at this price, people usually use them for portable recording booth, I unfortunately ended up using them as curtains for the time being and it does help with traffic noise. i am in the middle of upgrading a recording room with bass traps, acoustic foam, and sliding doors, I'm not rushing everything, I might get the material from guitar center. I've done a test with the Tascam DR70D I do hear a difference but I want my sound to be "crystal clear".

    Good video, thank you for doing this. But I sincerely cannot tell a difference between the various mics when you went from the cheap one to the rode and back to the b6 again. What am I missing here? I tried a few times with earbuds in, and a few times straight out of my laptop. I use the smartlav Rode mic with my smartphone for wedding ceremonies and I think it does a solid job but was looking to step up my audio quality a little. I keep hearing good things about the B6. But what exactly do I need to be listening for to detect the difference in quality? Something is going over my head and I don't know what it is. What would my $300 on this lav (or any other pro caliber lav) be going towards?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +mijonu1 good point. With laptop speakers and earbuds, you often cannot tell a difference. But on higher quality playback systems such as home theaters, you often can tell the difference. The question is, will your clients play the videos on high quality speakers such as with a home theater? If so, you may wish to account for that. You'll probably need better monitors for editing as well. If that's not a service you offer, you can definitely stick with the smartLav+ and be fine. Best wishes!

    Again, a well done video. I noticed that you are very audio-minded lately, what made you shift your focus from video to audio?
    And last a little tip: if you're wearing a good pair of headphones the noise-gaps are quite noticeable. I hear the noise fade out and be left with some silence. But other than that. Great work.

    Thanks for another great review. I have a suggestion for future reviews, that would help me. In this review, as in many others, it's hard to be sure what I am hearing in the comparison section. Since the different products are of similar quality, it often isn't clear to me when you are changing from one mic's sound to the next. Of course, listening over the web makes distinctions less clear, as well. It would help me judge the differences, if, via editing, you were to flash some sort of "change" icon onto the screen at every equipment transition. If this icon stayed onscreen for some standard time, say two seconds, it would make it easier for me to do my listening comparison, by relistening to the transitions between the different mics. Thanks again.

    Great mic - and a really nice case :-) would get the dpa 6060 instead any day though - you dont get anything more transparent and flat than dpa ...

  • @GeorgeGraves
    @GeorgeGraves 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another great video - thanks! My 2 cents? I wasn't "blow away" by the sound - but if you talk to any audio guy and mention countryman, they well all nod and say "yes, some good mics." IIRC, back in the day they use to sell a $150 mic that would plug into some lower end (azden?) wireless packs that would totally transform them. Anyways - I often find that different talent voices will really show off one mic vs another. Some handle deep baritone voices really well, and other will not. This mic being so small, I wonder if it's aimed at one-stage performances where you often hid the mic in a wig or hair for singing. Anyways, another great review - and some handy mounting tips on garments!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeorgeGraves Thanks George. I completely agree, there isn't one lav that is best. It really depends on the voice you're recording.

  • @daskerdaks
    @daskerdaks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should look at the DPA 4060 - it is in my opinion the best sounding lav of them all and it has the lowest selfnoise too - this is not conjecture, but fact. It sounds like a shotgun, not like a tiny mic. Selfnoise is 3 dB lower than the nearest competition, and the mic wire is very resistant to movement noise. It is also one of the smallest - not as small as the countryman, but the DPA sound is better. Also DPA has a lot of accessories for mounting, and the mic connector can be switched between different systems via the microdot adaptor. No lav mic system is as high quality and full featured as the DPA - The only downside is the price - it is, however, in my opinion worth it.

    Hi Curtis! I find your videos so informative and helpful, so thank you for making them! I have the Countryman B6 and Zoom H1 that you reviewed in this video. I recently purchased the mic and believe it's going to be a great mic, however I tend to get a lot of white noise when recording that I then have to go back and use noise removal tools to reduce. This then muffles the audio quality. The input level that I'm using on the Zoom H1 is 55. Do I need to go down to a much lower input level to sort of block out the room/white noise? I know this is a difficult question as each recording environment is unique. Any help is appreciated! Thanks Curtis!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Joel Kratzer Hi Joel, you can reduce the input level but that will also reduce the dialogue. The best solution is to find a way to manage the noise in the room. Is it from a computer fan? Air conditioner? Putting foam around the offending source (but no so close as to completely impede the airflow) can help. May need to turn off the AC.
      In post, you can also use a high-pass filter to cut out much of the white noise which will not affect the voice as much. Best wishes!

For work I tend to do a lot of interviews where the microphone showing isn't a problem however I want to get into more narrative film work. Not to mention when trying to mic talent, I was having trouble hiding the Senn ME-2 mics. Would you suggest the Countryman B6 over the Sanken COS-11D? Which would be better for hiding? • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ranjit, thanks for the question. "Boom microphones" are a larger class - any microphone on a boom pole whether a shotgun design with an interference tube, or a non-shotgun super cardioid like a Sennheiser MKH50. In this case, the term "Cardioid" refers to the latter, more specific category. I hope that clarifies. Thanks!

    Hi Curtis, I was just wondering how you would compare this to the Audio Technica AT899? I found both used, but in great condition with their whole package of accessories for a price around $80 to $100 (AT899 - $80, B6 - $98, local audio shop that sells used products). A person at the shop said he liked the B6 more because of size and the sound quality when used on stage work (he is a musician). He did say the AT899 is a great mic for dialogue for interviews or video blogs, but not as great as the B6 for stage acting and singing in his opinion. I tried your suggestion in getting a better sound with my saramonic wireless mic set by lowering the lav mic on my shirt that comes with the set. I got some improvement in sound, but I still want to try improve the sound with a better mic if possible, so again, I really would like your opinion on those two mics, and hopefully you will treat your viewers and me on your channel with a episode on headsets/ear set mics. Thanks for all of your reviews, advice and help. By the way, the guy at the shop said that I could get an xlr to 3.5mm trs / trrs adapter for wireless sets and mobile devices since most pro mics come with xlr connector, but he did say that he would not recommend that because that could effect the sound quality, and so I am up in air about making a purchase for a mic with a xlr connecter or connector that is not a trs or trrs.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like the B6 and that solves the issue of XLR vs. 3.5mm plug for you (I assume the B6 for sale has a 3.5mm plug as most do). The AT899 sounds decent, better than most lower priced mics, but the battery pack is pretty unwieldy which is a big part of the reason they don't use it for stage productions. Since you'll be moving around a lot, I'd opt for the B6. Also, even at $160, that's a bargain.

      thoughtprovoking001 That depends on budget and the type of recorder you'll be using. On the low end, the JK MicJ is a great deal at less than $30 US if you record into a small recorder like the Zoom H1. In terms of sound, the B6 I reviewed here sounds best to me, whether hidden or not, but of course it costs nearly $300 USD.

    2) I would like to replace the rodelink lav with the countryman lav, I realize that there are no options for rodelink and only Sennheiser ie "Countryman B6 Omni Lavalier Mic, Standard Sens, with Hardwired 3.5mm Locking Connector for Sennheiser Wireless Transmitters"

      Hi Will, 1) I would go with the normal response unless you will be recording lots of screaming and yelling. 2) Yes, the version with the locking connector for Sennheiser works with the RODELink. Good luck!

    Have you tried the JK Mic-J S90? It's priced around the same as the 044. I need it for some coverage that I need to do that makes me prefer it over a lapel for handsfree operations. I'm a gamer and mics included on headsets are just terrible. I do have an H6 to run earset mics through so there's that but I was hoping if you have any thoughts on the matter.

      LouisM I haven't used the S90 myself but it seems to review pretty well. Seems like a good choice for gaming. In terms of specs, looks similar to the 044 so I'd bet it is worth the approximately $30 US gamble.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Bussey good catch. I would expect that the included foam wouldn't do much to prevent the wind from blowing across the capsule. I would either hide the mic under clothing or look for after-market expendables like Rycote Undercovers to help in that situation.

    hush lav vs under covers?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, hush lav I think. However, my new favorite hiding place is in the talen's hair (if they've got enough of it). Very few issues with clothing noise and much fuller pickup of all frequencies making it much easier to cut with a boom mic. I just need to find a supplier of tiny tension springs to secure the mic in actors' hair.

    I noticed that there were 3 sensitivities, standard, and then 2 more sensitive options, for narrative filmmaking as my primary use, which sensitive would you recommend? Thanks :)

      Standard for film. The low sensitivity is for theater where they sing very loudly.

    Hi, I just bought some Countryman B6's. I got 3 for a really good price so I couldn't refuse. However my cheap TX packs only have a bias voltage of 1.79 volts. They sound crud. Is it the voltage. What voltage do I need for them?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd check with Countryman to confirm. If they're not getting enough voltage, that could very much be the issue.

    I'm really new to all this, and I am just trying to find a wireless system for my youtube channel recordings in the gym. The lavalier mic is just the mic not the whole wireless system, correct? What do I need to be looking for in total for my set up? Our camera mic works great for my kitchen segments, but when I do workout stuff in the gym, the sound is not good. Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

    • @curtisjudd

      +Moxie In Motion That's correct, this is just the microphone. You might have a look at the RODELink wireless system which can record directly to your camera if it has a 3.5mm microphone input, or to a dedicated audio recorder if you prefer: th-cam.com/video/CONhcUiyIXg/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Curtis, interesting comparison between B6 and Rode, but I think there is something wrong with the Rode part: I noticed a major noise than it should be. For example @7:03 it's quite audible the difference with the B6 recording when you switch from Rode to B6. B6 has -55dB RMS average (even in the previous rec), Rode is more here, but it can't be because they have quite the same selfnoise (only 1dB difference); more the Rode has a little better sensitivity (21mV vs 16mV). So they should pair at least. Maybe did you do something else in Audition for the Rode or not recorded with the same H1?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The RODE Lavalier is rather noisy in my experience. I don't care much for it. They were both loudness normalized to the same level (LUFS which can result in differing RMS levels).

    • @VideosProva
      @VideosProva 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apart on the timbric, that's tastes, well... I disagree on the reviews I heard on the noise: for example listen to this mp3 example at middle page: www.thomann.de/gb/rode_lavalier.htm
      There is no noise at all!
      Maybe has something to do with micon connectors, it's good with XLR and maybe not that great with 1/8'' (on the H1 with a lower phantom voltage) ?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure. I may have botched the audio processing. Maybe it isn't noise on my copies, maybe it is midrange harshness? Or perhaps I have two bad copies? I'm really not sure.

  • @bob76451
    @bob76451 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Curtis. I noticed that toward the end of a lot of the segments that some hiss got into the mix. Do you know where that was coming from? I.e. is that an artifact from the mic or just from post production?
    Thanks!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a couple of things going on there. I hear sound from my hands moving and some clothing noise which are accentuated by the loudness normalizing. I didn't want to apply a bunch of noise reduction so that we could hear what the mike truly captures. Also, I have a large freezer in that basement room which sometimes kicks on. I don't think I heard that near the end but it can be heard in some episodes. Real-world stuff :)

    • @screammachineman
      @screammachineman 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bob Adams I definitely picked up on that. It sounds like the gain is getting cranked up right as Curtis' last word(s) are being spoken before a cut. It's very apparent. It doesn't sound like freezer noise, clothing noise, or hands moving. It's distinctively a gain sound...or a normalization that's happening which is not preferred. I imagine that it can be eliminated as its of no fault of the mic.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry Marshall Thanks Larry. I went back and listened again with headphones and I do hear it at a few of the transitions. I think you're right, it is a result of the compression and normalization that I did. Still working on my technique there. Thanks for that! :-)
