I think that video got many Americans confused. Italians (like most Europeans) really take soccer seriously. Losing an important match is like losing a war. Churchill is supposed to have said that Italians make war as if they play soccer and play soccer as if they make war. :D So this video is a "soccer war" which I think is fitting as it has Joacim Broden in it and the song sounds like a Sabaton song. :D
Yeah, I recommend the American fans to put it in a perspective of a Super Bowl final... 😉 How would you feel if your favorite team lost it all at the end of the game?🤨 Probably PTSD for years afterwards. That's how the Italians feel about this. 😉
Btw, Sweden actually won the bronze medal match and were welcomed home as heroes. 😊🇸🇪

The commentary you heard during the penalties, was the real one that was broadcasted in Italy, with a legendary commentator, Bruno Pizzul. He is 85yo now, and I don't believe he is aware of this song xD
That loss was quite hard for italians to digest, because the decisive error on penalty was from Roberto Baggio, a penalty specialist and one of the greatest players Italy ever had
The fact that he doesn't know about the song is even funnier. And I remember the game. It was definitely a tough break!
I watched that match back when I was stationed in Panama. The company rec room was packed as we watched the Italians fight the heavily favored Brazilians to a standstill. No score during regulation, and it all came down to penalty kicks, giving Brazil the win. Many cases of beer were drunk that day! 🍺😎
If you want to have a grasp at how seriously Italians take football (soccer) matches, simply think at the sport that's most popular in your area. Then look at how wild supporters would go. That's exactly the same degree of seriousness we take our football matches. It only gets amplified by a tenfolds when it's a World Cup championship, and gets even more intense when Italy makes it to the final match, especially when it's gonna be against one of the "historical rivals" (like Brazil). 😂
I don't follow sports in general, but I've heard that that's exactly how that final world cup match went, back in 1994 (minus the guns, knives and mines 😂): neither team managed to score a point over the other, so in the end they moved to penalties, where Italy eventually lost.
Your memory was correct! The Colombian defender Andres Escobar had an own goal that contributed to their loss to the US team, and he was shot and killed just five days later when home in Medellin.
South America takes their soccer seriously lol. My family is from Ecuador so I know when gmes are going on because everyone is in the national uniforms.

I think it's safer and cheaper to buy someone to shave points rather than kill them. Less eyeballs too. I'd bet there is far more of that instead!

The names of the Italian players in the video are a mix of the real surname and each of the "nickname" of the band members.
The only exception is the "Potoreporter Maurizio Kyiv", where Potoreporter (Nanowar's singer) is a mix of POTOwotominimak and photoREPORTER, while Maurzio Mosca was an Italian sport journalist in the 1990s; Mosca in Italian means both "fly" (the insect) and "Moscow" (Russia's capital), so now you get "Kyiv" vs "Moscow" pun in this "militaresque" song; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurizio_Mosca
