It's been a long time since I last heard this hymn, how very apt this hymn is for the end times that we are now living in before Jesus Christ returns to the Earth for the second time.
This day after morning prayers we ended with this song. Praise be to our Lord, yes very appropriate for us today. By the Grace of God. Thank you LORD. Amen
Father please help all the believers in the world and our families especially the Casas and the Mejia and the Castañeda and the ureno and the Curiel families be Christian's soldiers in all their lives in Jesus Christ name I pray amen
It would be a good deed for Jesus to type this hymn and print it on small slips of paper to hand to strangers as a reminder why we are here. Jesus saves.
When I first turned to GOD, this song kept going around and round in my head, yet I only knew afew word's that I would repeat over again then whilst I was in the kitchen tidying up I heard this song on TV!. I believe with all my heart that it was GOD showing the words. Now you have it on TH-cam and I can listen or sing to it as often as I wish ❤❤ Thank You! And keep up the good work Soldiers of GOD 🙏🙏🙏🕊️🕊️
Father please help so that all the Christian people in the world so that all their families could be saved and also be Christian's I pray in the name of Jesus Christ amen
🙏thank you for posting this song. i posted this song to our prayer group, many are sick and afflicted. may the lord lift us all up in these last days. may he protect and comfort us and save our unsaved loved ones.
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the Word of Jesus going on before. Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; Forward into battle see His banners go! Refrain: Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the Word of Jesus going on before. At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee; On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory! Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise; Brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise. (Refrain) Like a mighty army moves the church of God; Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod. We are not divided, all one body we, One in hope and doctrine, one in charity. (Refrain) Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane, But the church of Jesus constant will remain. Gates of hell can never ’gainst that church prevail; We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail. (Refrain) Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song. Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King, This through countless ages men and angels sing. (Refrain)
This is interesting. We looked on the hymnary site (hymnary.org/text/onward_christian_soldiers_marching_as/fulltexts) which gives the words of this hymn from about 100 different hymn and song books. All of them, with two exceptions, have the refrain as, "Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before." The exceptions are, "Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus, which is gone before" (Methodist Hymn and Tune 1917) and "Stand up, stand up for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, It must not suffer loss." (The King of Kings 1915). We wonder where your version comes from. 😊
@@ChetValleyChurches As far as I am aware, the original written by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) has "Looking unto Jesus" in the forth line of the first verse. The first four lines of verse One are then repeated as a chorus. Onward Christian soldiers! Marching as to war. Looking unto Jesus, Who is gone before. The popular chorus was added by someone at sometime and has stuck. The original hymn has five verses. The hymn in question, although written by Baring-Gould, to my knowledge, had no copyright ownership. Hymns are often changed and adapted (and reduced) by Hymnbook compilers/editors. A typical example are the hymns of Charles Wesley (which have frequently been mutilated). Many of the hymns on hymn websites are either shortened or adapted (or both). Hymnary state the hymns are only a "representative" text. Please see The Redemption Hymnal No. 429 for the original text. Regretfully people get hooked on the edited versions of hymns and then tend to think that the original text is incorrect. It's good to see you've been researching this.
In my opinion this hymn could be a song for the memory of the Christian Soldiers who risk there lives in the Historical war era like World War 2 and World War 1 or it could be for Philippine National Heroes day for example Andres Bonifacio day and Jose Rizal day and Ninoy Aquino day
A little too aggressive, it runs counter to the whole - if we’ve tagged said correctly - concept to which it claims to stand. 1. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war; With the cross of Jesus Going on before. Christ, the royal Master, Leads against the foe; Forward into battle, See, His banners go! Refrain. Onward, Christian soldiers, Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before. 2. At the sign of triumph, Satan's host doth flee; On, then, Christian soldiers, On to victory. Hell's foundations quiver At the shout of praise; Brothers, lift your voices, Loud your anthems raise. 3. Like a mighty army Moves the Church of God; Brothers, we are treading Where the saints have trod; We are not divided, All one body we, One in hope and doctrine, One in charity. 4. Onward, then ye people, Join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices In the triumph song; Glory, laud and honor Unto Christ, the King, This through countless ages Men and angels sing.

Say what? What’s wrong with The Trinity ? Charity is a good thing, I suppose. So all of you have a problem with what God has revealed about himself in scripture? Get rid of the Trinity and plug “Charity” in there? Not me. What god (small “g”) do you worship? The verse in this song was intended to sing about the Trinity. Why are people censoring that? What’s so “hurtful” about the Trinity? Love to hear the answer.
Hi Richard. We're sorry to say that we don't know what you mean. Are you referring to the verse which starts, "Like a mighty army"? If so, as far as we can tell, the words we have are the original words which Sabine Baring-Gould wrote. Every hymn book we have looked at has these same words, ending with, "One in hope and doctrine, one in charity:" and we are not aware of any censoring. And we can assure you that we find nothing 'hurtful' about the Trinity. Please do give us some more information about your concern.
Thank you for your prompt and gracious response. You are correct, I’m referring to the “Like a mighty army” verse. I am relieved to hear that, as far as you know, there’s been no substituting of “Charity” for “Trinity”. I remember, I think anyway, as a child singing from the Blue Hymnal of the Anglican Church of Canada, “…one in hope and doctrine, one in Trinity!” I have been doing some quick research however, and as far as
…as I can see, you are correct. The 1865 version by Baring-Gould uses the word “Charity”. Sigh. I owe you an apology. Thank you for the beautiful performance of Onward Christian Soldiers!
Yes indeed. The 'fight' is against evil and wrong-doing: social injustice, abuse, oppression, and so on. Those things need to be called out and challenged.
1975, singing this during assembly at school. Grey College Bloemfontein South Africa. Great memories . This stuck with me r forever. Praise the Lord.
