Hi, I use plates that are 0.25 inch larger than the cake for ganache and 0.50 inch larger for buttercream.

Hi, I'm a hobby baker. I have been wanting to buy cake disks for a while now but I cannot determine what disc size to get as I don't want to waste money on disks or putting too much butter Cream on cakes but I also don't want the buttercream to be too thin. What would you suggest as some of my cakes shrink while others do not.
Or would it be worth getting different sizes? ( I use 8" and 10" cake pans"
    Thanks,
    From the UK.

Hi, the size of disc I use depends on the final finish. If I’m covering with fondant I use a disc that’s 0.25 inches larger than the cake, so for a 6” cake I use discs that are 6.25”. For a cake that’s being left naked, eg. A ganache covered cake or a buttercream cake, then I use larger discs at 0.5” larger, so a 6” cake I would use discs 6.5”. You will need a set of discs for each size pan. I have discs ranging through from 4.25”, upto 12.25”. You need to match the disc to your pan size. Hope that helps. Kay

What do you put between the bottom disk and the larger one to make it not slip?
