Like ⏳ through The hourglass so are the days of lives. I had friends whose moms would watch this and when I would go to their house I would find my friend watching this show with his mom and I would have to grab him by the ear come on let's go 🤣🤔
Wow! Thank you for posting this. I can't believe Irna Philips was on a game show; I never read anything about this. It's the first time Ive seen her other than in photos.
Irna was a genius. She watched ATWT daily and if it didn't turn like she thought it should, she called the New York office and told them so. She also helped to cast the actors and would call them , too. She wrote long story outlines into the future and filled in dialogue later. She was also known to kill off a character when needed much to the dismay of fans.
The third boxing contest Coy Gobble was the captain of Columbia University’s football team. He later attended medical school but was more interested in sociology, particularly urban affairs and how that related to children. He seemed like a really great guy from his obit. He sadly died at age 38 in 1976.
amazing to come across these old shows. Irna was a colleague of my grandfather..who worked for P&G in advertising for many years. My mother remembers visiting her and especially recalled her having adopted children ..redheads.. my mother was the only redhead in her family. I think my grandfather originated Guiding Light during his time with P&G.
….Wikipedia account indicates Ms Phillips died in December 23. 1973…no one had known she was Ill and she did not wish her death to be disclosed. I remember my mother being very sad to learn of her death. Her own father had died at age 73 less than two months earlier. She lamented the end of an Era. Growing up I would often hear her refer to her father’s Radio People..a reference to those he worked with in radio soaps…advertising. He was eccentric so it does not surprise me in retrospect he and Irna worked well together as he was not a typical male in the corporate world of advertising. I think he was lampooned in a few of the Doris Day films that featured the world of advertising as there were characters with his name.
"A carton of Marlboro's is waiting for you gentlemen on your way out". Please don't sue us when you get lung cancer. LOL. And I also recognized Ms. Phillips right away. I've seen pictures of her before. Huge As The World Turns fan. This was just over two year years since the show began. Who knew back then that it would last 54 years.
Paul Taubman, who provided the organ music, was the organist for another Procter & Gamble soap, The Edge of Night. which premiered on the same day as As the World Turns.
+Vahan Nisanian Guiding Light was one of the first big TV successes with soaps (though Search for Tomorrow and Love of Life, I believe, just beat it) but of course GL also had been a success on radio. Irna created it as well. However when it moved to TV it didn't really change much from radio soaps--As the World Turns, along with Edge of Night the first 30 minute soap, was the first one to really take advantage of the visual medium (all those soap things we take for granted like long held close ups on faces, etc)
Paul Duca Right, which was a flop at first. The belief was that Irna didn't have the patience she had with ATWT (where she made CBS agree to not cancel it for its fourth year) and with AW instread went for full out melodrama which was not her specialty. SHe quickly left, as did her replacement, and Agnes Nixon who was writing GL by then, was brought in where she made it a success (and was quickly hired by ABC to create One Life to Live and All My Children)
I would NEVER have had someone come on this show who was on before wearing the exact same costume. What were they thinking? That could have given it away! (although to be fair, they had 2 years, I only had a few days)
Lamar Clark was a game fighter, but to keep his undefeated streak alive he was often paired with tomato cans. he had a great streak but lost 3 of his last 4 fights, including his last fight with (the then) Cassius Clay. th-cam.com/video/s1TBZXtFsAU/w-d-xo.html
Contestant Number 3 as "Beverly Anderson" was a real babe! However, I couldn't make out what Jackie Cooper was carrying on about regarding "shiksas"! Please enlighten me!
+519DJW Check out the "Anne Frank's hider" episode, Sept 16, 1958. It's explained in the comments section, but you'll have to hit the "read more" button.
+j gruber Thank you for that explanation! Of course, I know what a "shiksa" means in Yiddish. However, I found the term strange coming from the mouth of Jackie Cooper--who, I''m sure, was of Irish extraction, and probably Catholic, to boot! That said, I'm also certain that he learned many Yiddishisms from the (mostly Jewish) heads of the Hollywood studios when he was a child-star. And by the way, do you remember which director or producer got him to cry by lying to him that his dog had been killed?
Jackie Cooper seemed like a pleasant fellow, but he's a weak panelist. He often hems and haws and asks pointless questions. I love how Kitty always bounces with glee when she guesses the right one.
Painted Dreams 1930 is the oldest true soap opera. The oldest surviving is Clara, Lu 'n' Em. The first predecessor to both the soap opera and sitcom was Sam 'n' Henry in 1925 which evolved into Amos and Andy. While it was comical it also had a continued open narrative. I'd highly recommend Jim Cox's "Great Radio Soap Operas" and "A-Z of Radio Soap Operas."
As the World Turns may have ended around 8 years ago,yet I still have a dual crush on Molly and Abigail.I’m convinced the ladies who were them,Lesli Kay and Kristina Sisco will reunite sometime soon.
Irna died in December 1973. Her death went unnoticed and unannounced until Agnes Nixon (creator of All My Children) told Harding LeMay (at that time headwriter of Irna’s creation Another World). Lemay’s wife Dorothy then contacted the New York Times which finally reported her death.
*Spoiler Alert:* Don't read this comment before watching if you don't want to know who the real boxer/mink raiser was! #I guessed correctly that #1 was the real boxer/mink raiser in game 1, because he answered all the questions so confidently and assuredly. Also, #3 seemed to have no clue about the price of individual pelts (though his use of the word "pelt" was somewhat impressive), and #2's assertion that breeding a "sapphire" mink with a black mink would yield a white mink does not correlate even with my minimal knowledge of genetics.
I knew it was her right off. That straight jacket looked awfully familiar. What were they THINKING having the same person on in the exact same outfit? That could have easily given it away!
Soap operas are like cigarettes for the mind -- addictive and comforting but have no GOOD value for the consumer, yet extremely profitable for the producer.
Irna Phillips also created my Mother's favorite soap opera Another World in 1964.
Like ⏳ through The hourglass so are the days of lives. I had friends whose moms would watch this and when I would go to their house I would find my friend watching this show with his mom and I would have to grab him by the ear come on let's go 🤣🤔

I was never a fan of soap operas, but I would never miss an episode of "As The Stomach Turns".
As the Stomach Churns
Brought to you by Maalox. 😮
Thank you SO much for posting. I adore the work of Irna Phillips, especially the creation of Guiding Light.

I wish you had posted the entire closing credits to this instead of cutting them off.

I heard Irna ruled with an iron fist. We can thank her for Eileen Fulton and Robin Strasser amongst other Vixens!
Hy Gardner is terrific!
Who were round 2 lady contestant #1's (Mrs. Richard C. Otto??) father and sister? Must be unusual to have so many members of a family as contestants.
Interesting use of soap opera-style live organ music while Bud reads Irna Phillips' statement.
Paul Taubman, who provided the organ music, was the organist for another Procter & Gamble soap, The Edge of Night. which premiered on the same day as As the World Turns.
"As the World Turns" ended in 2010.
I always thought "Guiding Light" pioneered the Soap Opera genre.
+Vahan Nisanian It was certainly the longest-running.

Vahan Nisanian it was the most successful transition from radio to TV.
Lamar Clark is still alive and well at the age of 88! (as of 12/8/22)
I was hoping they'd have a returning contestant to be guessed. Glad they did it. I recognized her.
This show could still work in today's world why doesn't someone in Hollywood bring it back?

Polly behaved herself for the most part. Kitty as usual did a lot of laughing. Beverly Anderson #3 was a babe. Thanks for the video. I miss Geritol.
Thanks. Really enjoyed that.
Man #1 in Game #1
Lady #2 in Game #2
Lady #3 in Game #3
I never thought the clue for Lamar Clark would be so obvious, I mean he was the ONLY one that came out WITHOUT gloves on

I believe "Ma Perkins" was one of the first soap operas. Virginia Payne was 25 when it first aired in 1931. Did the entire run(1960)
1933.
Nice work if you can get it.

I don't know when soap operas went off the air but I think they lasted until about 2015+-
I love polly

I have done what number 3 did. I have been known to have zoned out a time or two.
Polly Bergen is a hoot.
I believe Irna Phillips died in 1972.

The way soap operas evolved since the 50s, the stories are so unbelievable it's crazy!!!
Which episode was Beverly Anderson previously in?
+Vahan Nisanian look for a straight jacket episode i believe
+Vahan Nisanian May 21, 1957, the escape Artist episode
I knew it was her right off. That straight jacket looked awfully familiar.
What were they THINKING having the same person on in the exact same outfit? That could have easily given it away!
Red and Blue Networks were NBC.
The Blue Network became ABC in 1943.
For the second segment, I'm surprised no one thought to ask, "Who was the fourth panelist on your show?"
Soap operas are like cigarettes for the mind -- addictive and comforting but have no GOOD value for the consumer, yet extremely profitable for the producer.
With no knowledge or understanding about the genre, your negative stance is understandable, just incorrect.
At least watching the soaps doesn't give you COPD, throat or lung cancer, wrinkles around the mouth or several other malidies that make you miserable!
I only like Dark Shadows. OH, I used to watch Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman but that one didn't age so well for some reason.
This show could still work in today's world why doesn't someone in Hollywood bring it back?
ABC did a primetime revival not too long ago, hosted by Anthony Anderson ("Blackish"). It was pretty good.
