When i was working as a stone mason with my uncle almost ten years ago, i was taught to swing a sledge by throwing it straight up and pulling it down, as it wastes energy to swing it around and from behind your head, he mentioned thats also how you swing an axe, all these years later i see some influencers swinging axes wrong “looking” strong and swinging into super soft wood. No surprise to me that you have such elegant form and of course first class knowledge. Love your content

US Forest Service recommends splitting wood with no footwear... For stability. And to stay grounded.
The fact that he can fairly easily pick up the unsplit log means it is well seasoned and dried out. That's the most important thing to do.

Ya.. .I tried splitting a round from a "Tree of Heaven" which had been outside soaking for a year and it was a NOPE. Dry wood requires planning. And space. Or both.

West Coast wood, splits with an Estwing framing hammer if your maul is more than a step or two away. give him some of our gnarly east coast red oak... even my 5 foot wife manages a 12 pound wedge... 8 pounders are for middle schoolers...

Actually, that isn’t a splitting maul. It is the Helko Werk “ Heavy Universal Axe” from their Vario 2000 line. I have the exact model, and I love it.

Top tip from "Not the US Forest Service", but a professional firewood processor:
If you're splitting by hand, you want your block to be 12-16" tall . If you've got one as tall as he is using, you lose half of your splitting power by making contact before your full swing potential. Plus you have to lift the wood way higher each time you set it on the block. That may not sound like a big deal, until you split several cord per day. Then that little extra energy expense becomes very taxing.

Is there something wrong with that? Dude loved his job, I've been in a similar situation where I lost a job that I loved and everyone I worked with was great, I had a better time at that job then at home.
Where I was a C.C.C. "corpy", the way the Forest Service split firewood was, have the "corpys" do it, and God bless them, I actually learned a lot, and gained a bunch of confidence and skill by doing it.
I'm still absolutely convinced this man had a mental episode last year.

I always chop my wood in the lounge in bare feet with no shin protection, gloves etc.
Two other things:
1. Polypropylene handles don't shear like wooden ones can
2. Use an old car tyre around the wood you're chopping - prevents logs flying around, speeds things up massively and saves your back from picking every single piece up off the floor.

I was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division from 72-76 and near my discharge I was thinking about becoming a smoke jumper for the Forest Service. And when I did my research back in early 1976 before I got out, I read that paratroopers are immediately disqualified from becoming a smoke jumper. I was told, 'The Army does it there way and we do it ours and never the twain will meet.' True story. So ten years later and I became an FBI agent. Bwhaaa.

Pretty easy to split soft wood like to see you split an old yellow birch or some sugar maple that easy lol.

Out of all the idiots trying to get rich with do-it-yourself commercials, this guy takes the cake.The U.S. Forest Service does not recommend brand name tools. They are too busy dealing with casualties who try to split logs while barefooted.

It's amazing how many people who should know how to don't know how to split wood. Once we had a large stump block. At least 7 different guys went at it with a maul. None of them did anything. The old guy just laughed at them. I went at it. Treated it like I was taught how to shoot in combat. Slice the pie. Started on the edges, went around piece by piece until it was done. The old guy got up and said "by God finally someone who knows how to chop wood".

One watch is classic, stylish, and simple. My guess is he wears the Rolex explorer because it’s cool. He wears the other because it is not just a watch but a computer, I think it may be a garmin watch with gps that he uses on his dirt bike. The smart watch has many other useful capabilities but lacks the simplicity and style of a mechanical watch. Some people into watches figure why not wear both. Preference and options is all.

I have split more firewood in my youth than I care to admit. I used a maul for most of it depending on the denity of the wood. I was a lot younger then and I was pretty good and really enjoyed it.
You should also mention that safety is at least slightly important and it's a good idea to wear shoes.

I would like to know too. As would others. I would think this video would promote sales and with several requests the name would get revealed but I guess not. Maby my few replies will help get some attention. "What company manufactures the axe?"
How a skinny 14 year old and a 12 year old split log sections back in 1985:
Wedge maul with a welded-on, metal pipe handle.
Slam the maul on the log as hard as possible. Have the 12-year old hold the maul in place. Get an 8lb sledge. Hit the back of the maul until you drive it too far into the log to reach it with the sledge.
Turn the log over. Repeat the process.
Hopefully you get the maul far enough in and correctly aligned to split the wood. If not, it's going to be a long afternoon.
