    When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s I used to stand for hours watching my Dad building semi-scale planes from wood, foam, and fibreglass, including home made ducted fans powered by a 7.5cc i/c racing engine (webra speed 40 if I remember) on a Mirage F1, but he always struggled for thrust. So he built a scale T2 Buckeye and stuck the engine on the nose and blanked off the intakes, which flew much better. I still have his almost finished Aero L29 in the attic, ready for a ducted fan with enough power, it has been there 35 years now so probably past its best, but these modern engines look perfect for the job.
    But it's great to watch someone with similar skills and enthusiasm for the hobby, really enjoyable to watch.

    Ramy, YOUR a STUD!!!, I build Boats, Gas/nitro/Electric, from 18" electric toys to 7ft long with Gas turbines, and When I say build, I mean build the Mold's layup the hulls and all the way to completion, SO I KNOW THE WORK!!! you show us only the fun stuff on video, I know you are spending HOURS and HOURS sanding, priming, REPEAT again and again... I hope everyone really appreciates the 25 minutes you put up have 100's of hours of work behind it! Each project takes a life of its own and it becomes like a pet that is more often out of control.
    KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!

    A small suggestion for when you're cutting the kevlar hinges, so you don't accidentally catch the fibers (more of a ...ease of mind type thing), take some red (or otherwise brightly colored) painter's tape, the kind that's used to make lines (the 2 mm wide kind) and accurately pin the line before putting the kevlar hinge down. This way, when you're cutting through the fiberglass or the carbon fiber, you won't have to squint through the dust, it will be clear as day when you've reached bottom layer.
    You can leave that in there or remove it, it makes no difference to the wing itself.
    This tip is an oldie but goldie, from back in the day of visual effects when movies didn't suck. It was used to give the builder an idea when they reached depth cutting through foam on structures (layers of foam were built up with intermediate foils that were brightly colored to stand out from the toned down color of the foam, be it pink, white, or gray. Not exactly the same application, but it works.
    edit: when you're soldering that thick a strand, get yourself some 2.5 or 3 mm soldering wire. The faster you make the operation, the better for the joint. Neat trick with the small strand wrapped around to keep things neat. ;)

    There might be a problem with the right engine in terms of the motor itself, I suspect that because of the starting noises they do when the are first plugged in, the left engine produces those notes really loud, but the right engine produces those notes very quietly, and also the fact that it starts after the left engine, might be some friction between the motor and propeller, that resistance might cause it to sound quieter in the power up process sounds cause it's restricting the resonance capacity and also producing the weird friction noise at high load, an RPM and voltage load test would immediately tell you if there is a physical resistance in that motor.

    Related to caps and wire length. The issue represents the wire inductance, but you can cancel this by twisting the wires together, or tight them as close as possible. Best inductance canceling method is to use shielded wire, the outer shield represent - and the core +.

    Ramy, I hope that the capacitor bank works out for you. The VTOL I am building also has a similar distance to the batteries. You mentioned "I hope this is enough to give me full power from the motors. That is not this issue with the capacitors. Their purpose is is to reduce noise caused by changes in voltages. What you will see with insufficient capacitance is a degradation in ESC signal quality which can result in inaccuracies and corruption (basically get confused and failsafes).

    It might be a bit much for what you do but when we make RV airplanes we stager the soldering. It prevents the chance of a stray wire from the solder to penetrate the heat shrink of another. Extra safety. And I i the ESC wires can get quite hot making the heat shrink gooey and less effective

  • @Velo1010
    @Velo1010 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know those LiPo batteries generate some heat. So to combat the drain due to heat I would suggest adding some PC cooling fans you find on in servers or computer cases. They will work on DC voltage. You could even wire them to run on their own power source.

  • @Smokeyr67
    @Smokeyr67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fantastic work, I wish I had half your talent! Just one piece of constructive criticism, when your joining your wires, instead of cutting them at the same length it’s best to stagger the joins so if you wear through the heat shrink then they won’t touch bare wire to bare wire and let the smoke out.

    Absolutely love your work mate, the hours and dedication you put into your models is amazing and is a pleaser to watch. In saying that I would really rethink your connectors for your battery set up. From experience ec5 don’t like pulling a lot of amps and you have added the as150 to so more connectors. I would recommend just using the as150. I use them myself and trust them more than the ec5 because they can handle more amps and stay together. When running a 12s setup minimise your connectors.

  • @thomasshelley4617

    I always thought that with these longer extensions, it is better all round to have the bigger distance between the motor and the ESC rather than between the ESC and the battery. It goes over my head a bit, but the I believe it's fairly solid science. I believe your setup might cause some instability and big spikes in voltage. I have seen a few planes go down this way, but hopefully the use of capacitor bank should even out most of it

      Indeed. Motors are very inductive anyway so adding some inductance from long motor wires is no problem at all. But any inductance on the input side causes voltage spikes, and it needs to be compensated by capacitance.

    Get a castle link and then you can reverse motor direction. Also you can change timing and power settings. It is usb and you install a app to windows then cable plugs into the esc signal cable

    Ramy - it will be a problem with voltage spikes that will cause your ESC to fail prematurely. You should extend the motor wires instead of the battery wires. Look for an alternate location for the ESCs. This is one problem that is well known and must be avoided in new builds.

    You know you can reverse the motor in the ESC with castle link USB. So no need to check rotation before installing :)
    If you dont have castle link get it! You get so much more out of the ESC
