Small suggestion. When I SRT, I tie a running bowline around the rope and leave enough extra rope on the running end so that when you pull the girth hitch up, there's enough rope coming off the bowline to retrieve the rope. For us guys that are forgetful, it's one less thing to remember. Great video!!!
Don't understand what is different than what he did other than the tying method. is it a second rope? I use 75' and put an alpine butterfly 25 feet or so and pull that up. so I can go as high as 25 feet. This method requires 3x rope length the maximum height you can go. I used to tie a 25' long paracord on to retrieve but I found it took too long to recoil it. If I didn't it got knotted up. The bulk and weight of the extra 25' of 9mm sterling was worth it, and really not bulky or heavy at all.
Setting throw ball the day before sold me on this method...I was trying to figure out how to set my rope 30 minutes to an hour before sun up. Thanks dude.

I looked at this method for public land hunting. You can use a pulley instead of biner to help with the pulling. Also, you can use a foot aider to counter the pull as well. I used a bag throw and it sucks. Doing it in the dark forget it, I would never trust the throw went in the v. Then you make more noise throwing the damn bag up. The easiest way is to use a climber/sticks for the tree for first hunt of season, then drop a cheap thin paracord from V to ground, climb down and tie off a circle (two ends of string at bottom of tree going through the v. ) Next hunt, bring the climbing rope and tie to the end of string and pull it up and through back to ground for grinch hitch at top v. Then, when hunt is over, climb down pull end of string still attach to gh loop to bing down climbing rope to unlock knot and then then pull other end of climbing rope. Tie string back up for next hunt. I will just leave my climbing rope attached to the tree for the season as well.

Been saddle hunting for over 30 years but have used screw in tree steps or climbing sucks. Thanks for the info, I'm switching to SRT because it's alot safer and I'm 66 years old.
My buddy is an arborist, he came over and showed me this system,I figured on public land trying to get up 20 ft. I might get there at dark and I would turn light and I might still be trying to get the throw line over a certain limb lol. You need to do a full set up and take down video so we can see setting up your platform and switching bridges ect....
I'm thinking about doing this climbing method but then use a hang on stand. Right now I have 4 XOP sticks and they're heavy, noisy and generally a pain in the ass.

Just found this video. Fixing to get into saddle hunting and this seems like a quite, cleaner and better way to climb as apposed to tree gaffs or climbing sticks /bolts. Will definitely be giving this a try! Awesome video!

I think this would be a great way for me to hang 3-4 stands for the early season. Get up there, hang them and then rappel down quickly leaving no sticks on the tree. Would also prevent thievery. Great video!
L.S. Pair that with Leaving a throw line (tied in a loop, with a small loop for attaching main rope.) in the tree and you’ve got a great system. Just show up. Tie into the throw line loop and haul your rope silently into place. I love this meathod!!! Great video too!
you could have installed the retrieval line and biner before ascending. it wouldn't be in the way to much and if you need to descend and retrieve before reaching the top you can do that.

@@ridermak4111 Yes, but that means you have to carry a rope twice as long. The point of a retrieval line is that it can be much lighter than the rope rated to support your weight. A retrieval line can weigh almost nothing so you can nearly cut the weight of your climbing rope in half.
I've been climbing like this for years now and I love it. The problem is in the mornings if you don't have installed a paracord the day before. I use a telescopic shaft about 12 feet long to move the girth hitch up, then climb and put the tether on, lose the line and move it up to where you want it then climb. It's a little bit more work but it works in the dark with a head lamp. Happy hunting :) I also have a pair of japanese spurs that's very fast but they're not legal everywhere.

I used a mad rock lifeguard for my belay device, a petzl left hand ascender, sterling htp rope, an aerohunter kestrel saddle, and I cant remember the brand of foot loop that is attached to the hand ascender but any of them will do.

it's true. but paracord is cheaper and lighter than climbing line and if you are at the limit of your rope for climb height it's not a bad option. you can also just tie the throw line on to the rope for retrieval as long as it is a high strength line. i don't know how high you guys go up but i rec climb and go over 70 feet regularly which is over 140 doubled over. if i was to carry 150 foot vs 100 foot of climbing rope that's a big weight difference in my pack. trade offs

Nice Jamie. If you ever try a HAAS system, you'll get rid of the hand ascender. Much easier on the body and several times faster to ascend. Check it out and you'll never go back.
True, but the mechanics are different and your scent is all the way up the line. The limb will have to hold twice your weight if you tie off at ground level. Jamie's paracord trick works. An alpine butterfly with enough tail to reach from ground level works like his girth hitch. Or, you could tie a piece of paracord to your figure eight on one end of your line, as long as your line, then you won't forget to clip it on! (Oops!). More'n one way to skin this cat. I’ve been using wild edge stepps which I love but sometimes wish I had an extra 3 steps And the bag chokes me out I could store my SRT rope in the bag with my ascender and gri-gri Still have 18 days of hunting season it’s going to be hard to not try this before the end of January 😂
Great job and all your videos, I'm wondering if it would be easier if I had a rope ladder connected to the rope around the limb to my safety harness and then climb the rope ladder to pull me up I could connect a second carabiner from my safety harness to a ladder step to stop and rest. I've never tried it but I'm wondering if it would work. You're essentially doing the same thing with your climbing method
A lot saffer and easier method for setting your line is to make an alpine butterfky (midline knot) feed your tail end threw the AB and use the end of your rope to pull it down once your on the ground also a girth hitch takes away about 50% of your rope strength the AB is a lot stronger too only take away around 30% of rope strength and try putting a little pulley on your hand assender makes the mechanic advantage even smoother not saying anything is wrong with your method just some advise to make it even better
If you were to use an Alpine Butterfly instead of the girth hitch it would eliminate the need for your Lara cord and extra carabiner. Also, once less piece of rope blowing in the wind and/or getting in the way while lining up for a shot.
I'm totally new to SRT and climbing rope but trying to get a list of everything to make the switch....and understand it. How do you use an Alpine Butterfly to avoid the extra paracord/carabiner? Do you have double the amount of rope for the height so the Alpine is in the middle of the rope, leaving enough rope to pull the non-climbing side?
greg brightman You forgot the part about the alpine butterfly being tied in the middle of the rope instead of the end. When you descend you have two ropes hanging. Pull the one you weren’t on. 👍

Great video! I have been using this system but with 2 prusiks and want to upgrade to the ascender plus madrock. I hear the safeguard is best for this application coz it sets onto the rope by itself. Please comment about this, and thanks.
You are absolutely correct. The safeguard is the non-spring version of the lifeguard. and auto-locks the climbing line when weight is put on it. Read about the differences on madrock.com. Hunt safely, my Friends!
I am hope to use a rope climbing method when I get my saddle. I’ve been watching a ton of different videos and different methods. This one looks fairly easy. I also am looking at one call JRB climbing method have you looked at that one at all on the tub? If so what do you think of it?
No to do it properly you need to pick out a stationary limb no limbs under it as close to the tree as possible 6in diameter is a good rule of thumb do a weight bounce check after you tie in look up srt canopy anchors on you tube for a more in depth explanation
What brand and style of caribiner are you using? Especially the one at the top of your hand ascender? I tried to use the wild country that came with my mantis saddle and it doesn’t seem to lay properly. It kinda gets hung up.
Picard 80 use a “static” rope that is rated for climbing. The other type of rope is “dynamic” and is stretchy (used in rock climbing). Check out Knot and Rope Supply’s website, they have an awesome rope called “Deep Woods”. It’s camo and is rated for over 6,000 pounds. I use it for my tether and lineman’s belt also.
Great start on your video channel... Subscribed! I am fixing to move from out West where we spot and stalk hunt to Kentucky where I am going to need to get up in some trees. Really interested in the lightweight portability and all other positives of saddle hunting, and figure SRT is also the best and lightest way to get up there. Your videos are far some of the best I have found on SRT. QUESTION: What height do you typically hunt from, and what length of main rope would you use to accomplish that? 2x the height plus..?
I normally hunt between 20 and 30 feet depending on the setup. I use a 45 foot piece of sterling htp and dont have any problems. You need it to at least be long enough to touch the ground when you're climbing and rappeling down.
I have tried this exact setup while using a Madrock Safeguard. How do you descend smoothly with the belay device? I can never do this smoothly and have to switch to an ATC w/ autoblock to descend. Any tips would be appreciated.

It looks to have leg straps, which is great, as most of what I'm seeing people use on TH-cam are just sit drags, which seems a bit dangerous. It's an aero hunter kestrel saddle. You cant descend with a ropeman so the grigri or lifeguard is important. But you could use a ropeman to climb up and rappel device to get down.
I have the Madrock Safeguard (that I use when climbing using the one-stick method). Will my Madrock Safeguard work just as well for this SRT application as the Madrock Lifeguard that you show in this video?

It is a fusion non locking oval carabiner. I like a slim non locking carabiner for that part of the system. It's easier to get through that little hole in the hand ascender.
Would it be stupid to hunt like this out of a stand? Just use this to get up tree and then hang hang on? I just don’t like the idea of saddle hunting, doesn’t sound like something I would want to do all day.
I don’t worry about being comfortable during the climb because it’s just a minute. I worry about being comfortable once I’m setup to hunt. But try to stay as upright as possible instead of leaning back while you climb
About how much rope do you need for this? Just a few feet longer than the hunting height your wanting to achieve? If you already have a tree pre set, about how long does it take you to get up and hunting between 18-20'? Thanks!

Lol every time I try this, as soon as I put my weight into the saddle and off my feet I go crashing into the tree. Kinda wish he would have done this on a tree that wasn't leaning so hard.

Okay now remake this video but add close up of your setup so peeps actually know what to do... This can be done with rope only.... No equipment needed if you can get your rope over the tree limb.... Otherwise all you need to add is a roll of construction twine tie a rock to the end to replace the throw bag.... I would use rope with equal length twine and a large fishing sinker.... Once the rope is over the limb and you have both ends tie an alpine seat into one end number 1 leaving a 6 foot tag end that you tie around the rope end 2 with a prusik or other friction knot..... Now you can loop rope 2 under your foot and back to itself below the prusik step lift the prusik then step again..... Just add one D ring (I use home depot bought steel threaded D ring) tie your friction knot preferably Bachman knot thru this and it becomes a very effective ascended........ This can also be used to rappel down.... But if you add couple more steel d rings you can create a block and tackle setup for lifting your kill to dress it..... This way you make double use.... Anyway look up Bachman knot and prusik.... Look up rope only drt tree climbing and you will see plenty of videos....

I believe this is the simplest & easiest way to climb to access my tree stand. Will practicing this before season starts.

I try to always pre set trees with paracord if possible. Takes the throwing in the dark out of the equation

Thieves bring sticks to steal your stand
you could have installed the retrieval line and biner before ascending. it wouldn't be in the way to much and if you need to descend and retrieve before reaching the top you can do that.

I used a haas and a rope wrench for a while but with the short distances you have to climb for hunting it was overkill

Here is a huge tip for preset's . They make a reflective paracord. If you use that, you'll see your tree from 50 yds away !

You could, instead of running your hitch up the tree, tie the rope to the base of tree. Like we do for SRT

A lot saffer and easier method for setting your line is to make an alpine butterfky (midline knot) feed your tail end threw the AB and use the end of your rope to pull it down once your on the ground also a girth hitch takes away about 50% of your rope strength the AB is a lot stronger too only take away around 30% of rope strength and try putting a little pulley on your hand assender makes the mechanic advantage even smoother not saying anything is wrong with your method just some advise to make it even better

If you were to use an Alpine Butterfly instead of the girth hitch it would eliminate the need for your Lara cord and extra carabiner. Also, once less piece of rope blowing in the wind and/or getting in the way while lining up for a shot.
I'm totally new to SRT and climbing rope but trying to get a list of everything to make the switch....and understand it. How do you use an Alpine Butterfly to avoid the extra paracord/carabiner? Do you have double the amount of rope for the height so the Alpine is in the middle of the rope, leaving enough rope to pull the non-climbing side?
if you use an alpine butterfly has your girth hitch no need for the paracord hooked to the hitch

You forgot the part about the alpine butterfly being tied in the middle of the rope instead of the end. When you descend you have two ropes hanging. Pull the one you weren’t on. 👍

I use Sterling 9mm htp rope and a madrock safeguard or lifeguard.

I'm sorry, I'm not nearly active enough on TH-cam. I need to check the comments more. I used a mad rock lifeguard for my belay device, a petzl left hand ascender, sterling htp rope, an aerohunter kestrel saddle, and I cant remember the brand of foot loop that is attached to the hand ascender but any of them will do.

Great video! I have been using this system but with 2 prusiks and want to upgrade to the ascender plus madrock. I hear the safeguard is best for this application coz it sets onto the rope by itself. Please comment about this, and thanks.
You are absolutely correct. The safeguard is the non-spring version of the lifeguard. and auto-locks the climbing line when weight is put on it. Read about the differences on madrock.com. Hunt safely, my Friends!
I am hope to use a rope climbing method when I get my saddle. I’ve been watching a ton of different videos and different methods. This one looks fairly easy. I also am looking at one call JRB climbing method have you looked at that one at all on the tub? If so what do you think of it?
Does the limb have to hold your weight or is the rope tightening around the main tree
The rope is around the trunk of the tree. The limb is just a way to get the rope into the tree
No to do it properly you need to pick out a stationary limb no limbs under it as close to the tree as possible 6in diameter is a good rule of thumb do a weight bounce check after you tie in look up srt canopy anchors on you tube for a more in depth explanation
What brand and style of caribiner are you using? Especially the one at the top of your hand ascender? I tried to use the wild country that came with my mantis saddle and it doesn’t seem to lay properly. It kinda gets hung up.
Does a grigri work out in wet/snow conditions? I suppose you could back it up with a prusik

Picard 80 use a “static” rope that is rated for climbing. The other type of rope is “dynamic” and is stretchy (used in rock climbing). Check out Knot and Rope Supply’s website, they have an awesome rope called “Deep Woods”. It’s camo and is rated for over 6,000 pounds. I use it for my tether and lineman’s belt also.

Great start on your video channel... Subscribed! I am fixing to move from out West where we spot and stalk hunt to Kentucky where I am going to need to get up in some trees. Really interested in the lightweight portability and all other positives of saddle hunting, and figure SRT is also the best and lightest way to get up there. Your videos are far some of the best I have found on SRT. QUESTION: What height do you typically hunt from, and what length of main rope would you use to accomplish that? 2x the height plus..?
I normally hunt between 20 and 30 feet depending on the setup. I use a 45 foot piece of sterling htp and dont have any problems. You need it to at least be long enough to touch the ground when you're climbing and rappeling down.
Spot and stalk to tree hunting is going to be a huge change of pace for you. Good luck

I have tried this exact setup while using a Madrock Safeguard. How do you descend smoothly with the belay device? I can never do this smoothly and have to switch to an ATC w/ autoblock to descend. Any tips would be appreciated.

It looks to have leg straps, which is great, as most of what I'm seeing people use on TH-cam are just sit drags, which seems a bit dangerous. I was going to use a sit drag in combination with my climbing harness, but may not need to do that if I can find something like what you're using. Thanks again!
It's an aero hunter kestrel. In my opinion the best saddle ever made because it's not bulky but it's extremely high quality and over built.

It's an aero hunter kestrel saddle. You cant descend with a ropeman so the grigri or lifeguard is important. But you could use a ropeman to climb up and rappel device to get down.
I have the Madrock Safeguard (that I use when climbing using the one-stick method). Will my Madrock Safeguard work just as well for this SRT application as the Madrock Lifeguard that you show in this video?

Its is 9mm static rope. I have one end girth hitched and the other uses a carabiner

It's around 12 inches long but it could be a different length for everybody. Just have to go with a length that fits you

You can use your normal bridge but it isnt as easy as with a short bridge
What type of carabiner is the one that you ran your tag in through? I tried using a Black Diamond Positron Screwgate did not work well.
It is a fusion non locking oval carabiner. I like a slim non locking carabiner for that part of the system. It's easier to get through that little hole in the hand ascender.
Would it be stupid to hunt like this out of a stand? Just use this to get up tree and then hang hang on? I just don’t like the idea of saddle hunting, doesn’t sound like something I would want to do all day.
Curious your harness do you pull it up some because I just started the srt and I’m killing my back any suggestions?
I don’t worry about being comfortable during the climb because it’s just a minute. I worry about being comfortable once I’m setup to hunt. But try to stay as upright as possible instead of leaning back while you climb

About how much rope do you need for this? Just a few feet longer than the hunting height your wanting to achieve? If you already have a tree pre set, about how long does it take you to get up and hunting between 18-20'? Thanks!
I use a 45 foot rope. It's better if you have twice your hunting height

You can wear the knaider on either leg.

The short bridge is around 12 inches and I just used a couple figure 8 knots to make the loops on the ends

You could but the $1 carabiners dont last long. The best is an aluminum hammock carabiner. They last forever

I like the kestrel and the evolution before it better than anything else I've tried. They just hug your butt and support you better.

Okay now remake this video but add close up of your setup so peeps actually know what to do... This can be done with rope only.... No equipment needed if you can get your rope over the tree limb.... Otherwise all you need to add is a roll of construction twine tie a rock to the end to replace the throw bag.... I would use rope with equal length twine and a large fishing sinker.... Once the rope is over the limb and you have both ends tie an alpine seat into one end number 1 leaving a 6 foot tag end that you tie around the rope end 2 with a prusik or other friction knot..... Now you can loop rope 2 under your foot and back to itself below the prusik step lift the prusik then step again..... Just add one D ring (I use home depot bought steel threaded D ring) tie your friction knot preferably Bachman knot thru this and it becomes a very effective ascended........ This can also be used to rappel down.... But if you add couple more steel d rings you can create a block and tackle setup for lifting your kill to dress it..... This way you make double use.... Anyway look up Bachman knot and prusik.... Look up rope only drt tree climbing and you will see plenty of videos....
