This is an old posting so FYI these days there are quality CR injectors on the market and you can buy the injectors, feed tubes and the gaskets for the grid heater to do a complete job for around $1750 thats all 6 with sending you old injectors back for the cores.
Thanks for The information. I bought one from a dealership and only made it a few miles down the road with 100,000 miles on it and it basically has the same problem.
Did this noise subside upon building oil pressure? I have a similar knock, but only for the first 4 to 6 seconds of start up. Then it quiets down. 150,000. Truck sat in a field for years
It was a constant knock while running. My truck sat for some time too and it became evident when I pulled the motor. My valve train makes noise until oil saturates the rockers, that may be what your hearing. Depending on the year of yours and the fact that it was sitting, you could have sticking injectors as well. My failure was due to my stuck open injector
Mine is doing the same thing. I thought it was an injector and mine were well due to be replaced...I just put a new set of BBI injectors and still have a very similar tapping. Truck runs great, no blowby but has that tapping like a ballpein hammer on a pushrod or something. 😩 I don’t have time to do a rebuild right now and I need the truck.
Totally understand, good start with replacing the injectors. I would use a automotive stethoscope and determine if its a rod knock, main bearing knock, or something else. pulling the head is the best choice, inspect the pushrod and rocker assembly. Once the head is off the truth will come out. I would not recommend driving it, every second of run time will further the damage
My 6.7 Cummins is doing the same took it to get hooked up on the computer and cylinder 1 is what came up so I’m going to start there hopefully nothing major.
I could have definitely done only that and one injector so save some $. My truck sat in a field for 5 years in Texas, you'd be surprised how much that hurts an engine.
Short, if you do it yourself (everything) and just repair the one problem injector and cylinder probably $750. Full rebuild top and bottom end with upgrades, machining, fluids, hoses and such - 5k (if you do it yourself). Sending it to a shop for a full rebuild would be around 10k
Yes, reman injector, head gasket, fluids, ring set and renting a cylinder hone. This is with no piston damage and assuming nothing is broken along the way. Got to pull the engine unless you have a tall lift on the truck lol
thanks for the tips here ..i was able to figure out my bad injector with this video by unplugging the injectors and listening to the noise change ty
How did you know it wasn't the injector?

I heard you can just disconnect the exaust manifold
I have the same problem on this engine.
You think injector caused that?
Did it have blowby
sure did!
how many miles on this motor?
141,000 Early 03 with problematic injectors
Ouch. Needed bored I presume? Did you run relative compression?
Bored just enough to clean up the cylinder, the grove worn was as smooths as glass. I decided to do a full rebuild with some goodies
May as well while it was apart. Hard to tell on the video but I was curious if that could clean up with a ball hone and rings.

For sure. If you’ve got the $ on hand it would be better in the long run, and have virtually a new engine.
@@turbota6999 mine is doing the same if #4 injector bad knock what do i need to do with out spendin a ton of money jus a work truck
I’m going through the same man...
Bummer dude. Wish is was an easy fix
Cylinder 1 bang
How much did that end up costing you? Think mine needs the same.. lol

@@chevyracer666 I just replaced all 6 injectors and it cost me right about $3000, that was with me doing all the work. Shop quoted me about $4500
