This game was weird, 49ers Offensive line had trouble and was rebuilding. The 49ers and Rice on the verge of becoming dominant. The '86 draft brought in future HOF players into the 49ers and this was a transition year from the 81-84 Super Bowl teams to the 87-90 Dynasty.
Came the playoffs, both of these excellent teams would be dominated by the eventual champion New York Giants. NYGs' 17-0 NFC title win over Washington followed one of the greatest beatdowns I ever saw, a 49-3 shellacking of San Francisco in the divisional round. I still don't believe it.

Air Coryell vs West Coast. 40 passes by Schreoder and Gibbs was the guy who created Air Coryell as the OC for The Chargers. 1986 was probably Gibbs most pass happy season.
Either the play was not designed correctly or Schroeder planted to throw in the wrong spot. And possibly Grimm over ran the POA. Board got to take advantage of one of those 3 things.
The 1986 49ers draft was insanity. Larry Roberts, Tom Rathman, Tim McKyer, John Taylor, Charles Haley, Steve Wallace, Kevin Fagen, and Don Griffin who are all household names.

My favorite Al Michaels MNF moment: At four minutes left in the third quarter (11:50pm eastern time) "What comes first? The fourth quarter or Tuesday?" Ten minutes later (still in the third): a banner at the bottom of the screen "It's Tuesday" (see timestamp at 2:10:00 for all of this)

Coming into this game, SF was having a disappointing season. Bill Walsh asked his staff what should be done to help the team play better. Mike Holmgren suggested that the 49ers should stick with Montana instead of a 2 QB system. Walsh agreed to try it, but told Holmgren he’d fire him if Washington beat them in this game. Great coach, and man he didn’t fuck around.
This was the last time the Redskins beat the 49ers until 1999. The 49ers went on a 7-0 run against the Skins after this game including two wins in the divisional playoffs in 1990 and 1992. I know this because my dad was a huge Redskins fan and he loathed the 49ers with a passion. He never explained why other than to say he thought they were arrogant. I think he might have also held a life long grudge against the 49ers beating them out for team of the decade during the 1980s. He told me repeatedly that beating the 49ers was more important to him than beating Dallas. If they lost to the Cowboys he'd be upset for a day or two and then move on to next week. If they lost to San Francisco he'd stew about it all week long. When the Redskins finally broke the streak in 1999 to win and win the NFC East, to my dad it was better than winning the super bowl.
I’m the biggest redskins fan that there can be and this was a darn good win by the skins but just looking at Montana and the 49ers after this loss you get this vibe that they’re saying to themselves “we weren’t gonna tolerate losing anymore.” I dunno I just think good teams learn from Each other skins bears giants 49ers. It’s all good
The NFL was sure fun in the 80's interesting that only 2 Super Bowls was won by the AFC (Raiders)...yep, the NFC dominated the 80's Redskins, Bears, 49ers, Giants....all great teams in the 80's for sure.
This was the most disappointing season for the Skins during that era. It was arguably the best team they ever had. They beat the defending SB champion Bears at home in the playoffs, but then Bill Parcels and the Giants ruined it. They would have easily won the Super Bowl if they didn’t get stopped one game short, and they would have matched the 49ers with 4 rings. The NFC was completely dominant in the 80s. That was the peak of the NFL.
NFL was great until the 49ers bought (slightly illegally [sega/odd contract structures to defer pay]) that super team of free agents just to play the cowboys. The packers then followed suit with a defense and wide receivers from all over (Reggie white Dotson Joyner Prior Simmons Buckley Beebe Howard Rison) . No more team recognition/loyalty. 93 free agent agreement had good intentions, and parity sounded good, till it no longer means anything if the 30th best team upsets the top team. *no offense to the 80s 49ers; it was 94 when it went too far.
I remember stepfather took me to this game he was a big Redskins fan and I'm still a niners fan we got home so late and I think I had school the next it was so long ago I just remember I had my niners hat on and I went home mad we lost to the deadskins

Smashmouth vs West Coast Offense, a great rivalry by the West vs East.
Air Coryell vs West Coast. 40 passes by Schreoder and Gibbs was the guy who created Air Coryell as the OC for The Chargers. 1986 was probably Gibbs most pass happy season.
33:46 - Darrell Green doing what he did best.
49ers and Redskins had some truly great games over the years. Too bad Snyder has ruined that organization seemingly beyond repair
HIGH VOLTAGE agreed Snyder ruined them
It was ruined before Snyder
Woooow classic times I was 13love my skins hopefully new ownership QB will bring back the glory yrs
R.I.P.: R.F.K. Stadium
I will skip the dessert, thank you.
8:13 Russ Grimm plays matador to Dwaine Board. Didn't see that often.
Either the play was not designed correctly or Schroeder planted to throw in the wrong spot. And possibly Grimm over ran the POA. Board got to take advantage of one of those 3 things.
Schroeder’s happy feet in the pocket does that to O lineman
"Football has not always been a violent game"- Frank Gifford. Chuck Bednarik spits out his beer.
Charles Haley v Joe Jacoby WOW
The 1986 49ers draft was insanity. Larry Roberts, Tom Rathman, Tim McKyer, John Taylor, Charles Haley, Steve Wallace, Kevin Fagen, and Don Griffin who are all household names.
This is when Real Men played Football. Grid Iron
Crazy that Schroeder ended up getting benched and the skins won the super bowl the next year
This game wasn't one of Jay's better efforts
Schroeder was a deer in headlights against the better teams. Three games vs. the NYG that season prove it.
5:35--Doug Williams TRIED to talk to Jay Schroeder. Karma is a bitch--see 1987.
@@JAWrightonline I peeped that too, straight blew him off...
Back when pro football was worth watching.
God I miss this game
Nothing like the old days
This was a great commentating crew. They later added Dan Dierdorf and messed it up...
Why was I 7 & Still member watching this game lol thx for the memories
As a young child, sick to the gills, threw up in my oatmeal. Then I was told to finish it. Impact moment.
RFK was always rocking especially on Monday night, This '86 Redskins team was really good but they couldn't beat the Giants that season, New York beat Washington three times in "86. Including the NFC championship game 17-0.
Obviously I forgot about the changing wr position at San Fran. Jerry, wrapped wrists, no gloves, Dwight wearing scuba gloves made popular by the fun bunch.

My favorite Al Michaels MNF moment: At four minutes left in the third quarter (11:50pm eastern time) "What comes first? The fourth quarter or Tuesday?"
Ten minutes later (still in the third): a banner at the bottom of the screen "It's Tuesday"

Since there were no 2-point conversions back then, an 8-point lead was essentially a
'2-score game'
SF: 14 penalties, 114 yds
Montana: 418+ passing yds, 0 TD's
Rice: 12 catches, 200+ yds, 0 TD's
Mr.Bart you or can you get the game between the broncos vs redskins and vikings vs redskins in 1986.
That was the 1988 matchup. This game is from 1986. Steve Young wasn't on the team yet.
@@astrostar49 Definitely 88 when they slipped to around 6-5.
Longest game in the history of MNF! But at least the good guys won, so all's well that ends well. HTTR!
2:56:41 a young Charles Haley showing promise.
Why did the 49ers go for it on 4th and 4 late
I’m the biggest redskins fan that there can be and this was a darn good win by the skins but just looking at Montana and the 49ers after this loss you get this vibe that they’re saying to themselves “we weren’t gonna tolerate losing anymore.” I dunno I just think good teams learn from Each other skins bears giants 49ers. It’s all good
Boy the laundry mat must have been opened late that night.....so many flags it's insane.
I wish the Cardinals had stayed in St. Louis and the NFC east.
The NFL was sure fun in the 80's interesting that only 2 Super Bowls was won by the AFC (Raiders)...yep, the NFC dominated the 80's Redskins, Bears, 49ers, Giants....all great teams in the 80's for sure.
Russ Francis was giving away the snap count.
Damn ima watch this later
This was the most disappointing season for the Skins during that era. It was arguably the best team they ever had. They beat the defending SB champion Bears at home in the playoffs, but then Bill Parcels and the Giants ruined it. They would have easily won the Super Bowl if they didn’t get stopped one game short, and they would have matched the 49ers with 4 rings. The NFC was completely dominant in the 80s. That was the peak of the NFL.
19:08 Prophetic
NFL was great until the 49ers bought (slightly illegally [sega/odd contract structures to defer pay]) that super team of free agents just to play the cowboys. The packers then followed suit with a defense and wide receivers from all over (Reggie white Dotson Joyner Prior Simmons Buckley Beebe Howard Rison) . No more team recognition/loyalty. 93 free agent agreement had good intentions, and parity sounded good, till it no longer means anything if the 30th best team upsets the top team. *no offense to the 80s 49ers; it was 94 when it went too far.
So true
Yes this is when the Redskins had a real coaches
1:52:25 Montana misses wide open Rice TD, wow.
Redskins had such a cool nfl logo and now it’s so vanilla and plain. Just like their new name
Is there a corner of Montana and Clark street in San Francisco?
I remember stepfather took me to this game he was a big Redskins fan and I'm still a niners fan we got home so late and I think I had school the next it was so long ago I just remember I had my niners hat on and I went home mad we lost to the deadskins
Your team played in cakewalk division. If the 9ers had played in the NFC the SB titles would have been drastically reduced.
@@robertrowe5349 Says the guy who apparantly doesnt know the 81 9ers in the playoffs beat the giants and the cowboys to make the SB.
@@robertrowe5349 yeah the NFC West was a bunch of cream puffs other than the 49ers sometimes the Rams are good
@@robertrowe5349 I think the 49ers won a dugout one or two super bowls win them I mean that's about it

Whatever that's so dumb to say
Art Monk was always getting tackled at the 1 yard line lol. I used to feel sorry for him
Green vs Rice just about as good as it got in the 80’s.
I was at this game.
As sick as I was hearing Michaels' bitching about this game, this was a tough, ugly game where Montana threw three interceptions. Everyone can get got, even Joe. Still, nice upload as it reminded me of those great teams I cheered for, both Washington and SF, who is still my favorite.
Over 500 yards of total offense by the 49ers, yet they never found the endzone
It seems like at times the Redskin O line wanted Schroeder to get hurt.
Watching these old games, I'm learning that these players who became legendary actually made a lot of bad plays along the way.
Looking at you, Joe.
