I miss the 90s... we didn't know how good we had it.
I'm not that big a Ben Stein fan but this was easily one of the greatest game shows of all time.
Yeah, I too am not such a big fan of Ben Stein, but I love Jimmy! This was the first time I'd ever seen or heard of either of them.

I'm not the biggest Ben Stein fan either, but this show is awesome. Reminds me of Jeopardy, except Ben Stein had the balls to do something Trebek never could, and become a contestant on his own show!

I loved this show. I remember telling a friend "Jimmy Kimmel looks like a guy who walked around high school with his hands down his pants."
If it wasn't for this show, he'd still be doing shitty sports talk radio shows on some random low-powered AM station instead of acting like a complete douchebag on a major network every single night.
This show had hit written all over it from day one!
Everything about this show worked. The set looks great, Ben is great, the format is great, and that's why it lasted a good 6 years.
Moreso the episodes with Jimmy Kimmel - the interplay between Stein & Kimmel was classic

The format is insane in my opinion. I would've paid him $5000, $50,000, $500,000 just to be on the show. Ben Stein is beautiful.

Even with the disclaimer at the end, it's still very funny that the game show is called "Win Ben Stein's Money," so direct and absurd, I like it! :P

One of my favorite game shows as a kid. Used to watch it at my late grandmother's house. She loved Jimmy Kimmel very much. I wish she could have seen his success in a late night talk show. Brilliant funny and off the wall.

Thank you for posting this!! I havent seen this show since I was 10. My brother used to watch it all the time and he was a mastermind!! He could get every question right. I always told him he should go on this show or Jeopardy. That was over 20-years ago and he's gone now. Thank you for sharing the memories!! :)

I'm sorry that Russell Giles didn't win $5,000, but I had a feeling that he would make it to the Final Round, because he is a really good game show contestant. For example, in 1990, he was on The Challengers, and how much money did he win on that show? $66,830.

My dad was one of the top satellite engineers in the world…he was the only engineer in the world who could work on Inmarsat-M Satellite Telephone systems (which means Satellite Telephone systems on ships, yachts, etc…) so we lived in a 2 million dollar house, on a huge lot of land…and we had crazy shit at our house like a C-Band Satellite Dish which intercepted shows being broadcast to regional Fox network before it got cut for local commercials. My two cheerleader older sisters used to have the whole cheer squad at my house every Wednesday afternoon & all these chicks would be foaming at the mouth for Luke Perry & Jason Priestley…we had XM Satellite radio starting in 1996, when the satellites were launched (my dad made a point of telling my neighborhood friend & I that the satellites were named _Rock_ & _Roll)_ we also had Direct TV starting in 1994, I remember _Win Ben Stein’s Money” was the first place I ever saw Jimmy Kimmel
It is nice to see this show again. I haven't seen this show or its first season in AGES. I needs to be seen in reruns again, if not revived (with a new host).
It did have a spiritual successor of sorts when Pawn Stars had that game show Pawnography

One of the executive producers was Al Burton, a longtime TV producer who worked on shows such as “The Jeffersons”, “One Day at a Time”, “Diff’rent Strokes”, “The Facts of Life”, “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman”, “Charles in Charge”, and “The New Lassie”. He was also a close friend of Ben Stein.
Try watching this for the first time while stoned…. Hell of a trip.

Haven't watched this show since i was a kid... And then immediately fell asleep before the first question. And still knew there's no surface on Jupiter in my sleep. Not saying its bad, just thought that was funny, I'm not kidding at all.

its great how the show leveraged Stein's desire to defend his intellect into genuine investment in the show, even just watching him hit his clicker, under the silly pretense he's defending "my money" lol
If I understand correctly how it worked, while he didn't actually have to pay the contestants directly, that money did come out of his paycheck for each episode.
According to the credits at the end of the show:
"Ben Stein's Money" is the prize furnished by the Producer.
Ben Stein keeps the money in the prize budget not won by the contestants at the end of each production period.
If during the production period the contestants' winnings exceed the prize budget, Producer pays the overage.
So, even though it's not coming out of his pocket directly, he really is defending his money.
"Have you ever forced yourself to vomit?" "MANY times" haha....wait, what?

This show was kind of a tounge in cheek dig to Trebek from Jeopardy. Haha. Everybody used to give Trebek shit for acting so smug when contestants answered wrong. They wanted to see Trebek play the game for once.
Ben would also regularly chastise contestants who answered the questions on this show in the form of a question.
