Here's one of the first (if not, THE first) taped episode of the Comedy Central series. Note the rule in the Best of 10 Test of Knowledge that was quickly changed.

Indeed, also later they had the clocks in their booths Ben had his small grandfather clock timer and the contestant had the wall clock timer with a crack on it.

Also the game board isn't equipped with televisions yet, simple pull cards are used.
Perhaps this episode was one of the first taped and aired out of order.

Re: The end of that Best of 10 Test of Knowledge round: The producers found out ties could be more common than they thought, so they changed the rule to have the contestant being awarded an extra $1,000 in addition to what they won in the maingame.

Is that better than the contestant winning all $5,000 on a tie? On Hit Me on The Price is Right, they let ties go to the contestant.

Here's my question though. What if per se an exceptionally smart contestant managed to get to 4100 going into the final round and intentionally tied Stein. I should note there is no mention that 5000 is a cap.

Generally, when scores are tied in final round, the contestant earns another grand rather than the clean sweep of five grand in later seasons.
