  • Setting Up A Pastured Turkey Brooder - Homestead Farm
    Today we are cleaning out our brooders and setting them up for our new pastured turkeys that will be arriving on the farm in a few days.
    We clean out all the old shavings, add new shavings, add lights and feeders and drinkers for the new turkey poults. All the old shavings and waste is added to our growing compost pile that we'll use for garden soil later this year.

    You just use a 1/4 inch chicken wire and sift it into the pure compost

  • @AllHouseRecords
    @AllHouseRecords 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lot of your animal bones can be dried and grinded into bone 🦴 meal to super power your compost

    The compost looks great! I love making compost out of deep bedding. Makes great stuff.

      @@SheratonParkFarms I'm doing turkeys for the first time this year. Ours will be here in May. So I get to follow your lead. I would love to come out to yalls farm and meet you if at all possible. I live in Germanton about 15 minutes North of Winston-Salem. Not too far from you. Also I maybe doing some broiler chickens in the summer/fall with a buddy and would like to pick your brain about that.

    I am a little envious of the ability to start brooding outside. We have to have our brooders in the building just to keep them warm. It's so exciting to see how you have expanded this past year.

      Thanks. I’ll put an old blanket over the top at night if it’s going to be really cold. Helps to hold the heat in. I’d rather have them inside but don’t really have a good place to put them. Plus I like having some sunlight available for them. Thanks for watching

    Love the brooders. I'm using large totes right not (small scale homestead) & I have used a large plastic stock tank. I'm thinking about turning one of my outside wildlife enclosures (I'm a wildlife rehabber) into a brooder room with those type brooders built inside. I see it as double protection from any possible predator issue.
    I could almost smell the compost. I'm crazy. I love the smell of good dirt & earth 😁👍

      We could sell ground turkey all year long. whole birds are more popular around Thanksgiving and Christmas but ground does well anytime.

    is it possible to make the broader bottom on a swivel, so you could unlatch it at the front, and have it slide down into your tractor bucket? save the back a bit?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. Like a flip down front so I don't have to reach over in to the brooder. I like that idea.

  • @christophish
    @christophish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m intrigued by your brooder being outside for the most part. What kind of minimum outdoor temperatures are you using your brood era where they are? I see they are somewhat protected, but still outside. What is the lowest outside temperature you run your brooder in?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really don’t have a minimum. If it is going to get really cold, say below 30, I’ll put an old blanket or quilt over the top. It helps to hold the heat in and stays nice and toasty.

  • @dfishman76
    @dfishman76 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How many birds can you put in a brooder that size?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had as many as 100 in there but they didn’t stay for long. 60 is comfortable for a few weeks but you have to keep plenty of shavings on hand.
