Turkey Poults Arrive on Farm - Grow Your Own Food Series

- Our first batch of turkey poults have arrived on the farm and we are ready to get them started. These are baby broad breasted white turkeys that will grow out to about 16 weeks at processing.
Turkeys need a little different care in the brooder. We talk about heat lamps and the proper temperature for raising turkeys and preparing to put them out on pasture. Turkeys also need a higher protein content in their feed.
Pastured turkeys are very similar to pastured chickens. They have a few different requirements but are really easy to raise.
Raising turkeys on pasture where they can eat grass, bugs, worms and grubs makes for a better flavor meat and it lets the turkey act like turkeys should. We keep them in a chicken tractor with some poultry netting surrounding their tractor to protect them from predators. They move on the pasture every few days where they get a fresh spot to forage on. We've also found that turkey manure is great for the soil and helps us grow a very green and lush pasture grass.

I just saw my first turkey poult at Rural King, and I am 60 years old...

I just ordered 10 Thursday and they will be here on the 10 th . I never had turkeys yet , I think it will be ok.
We have 14 in the field and another 30 in the brooder right now. Get them through the first few weeks and they are bulletproof.

Thanks for the good vidio. I have had turkeys for a year or so. From the first few batches off chicks non survived, i now know this was probably due to a lack of protein. So i was wondering can you add proteins to you feed by adding beans or peas?

I have 3 recessive slate turkeys a week old we just got today. 45 min drive, put them straight back on the lamp and have food and high protein crumbles. I've had to sip their beaks some. They have been very still and sleeping a lot. Not much movement. My chicks are way more active. Trying to figure out if they are jsut resting from
Being moved or if I should be more worried. They have Been home for 6 hours and aren't walk-in around just laying down
Give them some time and let the warm up. Turkeys are a bit fragile.

Yes. They need grit early.
Turkey's are a pain in the but always up to something you just have to know if you cut there wings they still can jump 5 feet high
Hi, I have ordered 15 chocolate turkey poults and am deciding on housing after they've outgrown the brooder. Once full grown, how many turkeys do you keep per Suskovich chicken tractor? And do you provide roosts? Thank you!
Hey. Thanks for watching. I’ll keep about 20 per tractor but they also have a good area to get out and forage in. The tractors are great for moving then ( just put a little feed in there and close the door). Don’t provide roasts. I’ve seen them Ross in top of the tractor.

Just curious about when you decide to process your birds. We've always been afraid to raise any bird other than CornishX and process at 8 weeks. We read that the processing age for Freedom Ranger is 14 weeks. Are you keeping feed in w them 24/7 and that's the reason for the time difference? We've wanted to try Freedom Ranger, but 14 weeks and bad reviews from friends who have had them have kept us away. Thank you
Great question. In our experience Freedom Rangers are ready at 8-9 weeks. We order from Freedom Ranger Hatcher and actually prefer their Color Yield breed but they had a run on them early this year so we had to go with the Freedom Ranger for a couple of rounds. We've done the Rangers and the Color Yields in the past and have had good luck at the 8-9 week mark with a little quicker turn around in the warmest part of the summer. We don't leave feed on all the time but do ration feed two times per day. Start with 50lbs of high protein chick starter (24%) and feed that at a rate of 50lbs per 30 birds. All total this group ate about 475lbs and they were just shy of 9 weeks old. I wouldn't raise these birds to 14 weeks at all. They would be too big in my opinion. Why don't you just order about 20-30 of the color yield and try them as an experiment? Our customers love the Freedom Rangers and Color Yield. They say that have more flavor and a better texture than the Cornish. Let us know how it goes. Appreciate you watching!!

Anyone have tried and tested advice for preventing turkey piling when they are a little older, say, maybe 3 weeks old and fairly feathered? Basically, right before they are ready to go outside. For whatever reason, this is my biggest challenge with turkeys, otherwise I love'em and am quite successful with raising them. Last year I lost about 50% of my flock. I'd come check them in the morning and there would always be one squished. It was not a heat issue, by the way. I was able to crank it up to make sure they weren't huddling to keep warm. They just seem to love to sleep in a pile and the weakling always gets buried under. I also rounded the corners of the brooder. Didn't help much. So any other advice before this season begins??? Hello! Do you use any medications to prevent high mortality in newly hatched poults, drugs or vaccines? I have a friend who is veterinarian who recommends to give only vitamins and minerals in drinking water, as well as granulated feed with 28% protein. What is your opinion? Thank you in advance!
Have a question should I give my baby turkey probiotics pouches like I do my chicks. Bc my first two didn't n they are fine. But the first two our just 3 week older then these last two. They are a week old

Just got some 3-4 day old poults but they are not learning to eat or drink on their own. Any tricks I need to know. I have dipped their beaks in water as well as in the food
Never had trouble with that. Make sure they have plenty and its easily accessible. If you've dipped their beaks, they should know where it is. Keep an eye on them and try dipping the beaks again. Keep me posted on how they are doing.
Hello, what is the space needed and the ratio of drinkers and feeders for 100 turkeys in the brooder and growing houses?
Just got new babies never had turkeys we set em like we do our chicks. But we lost 3 in two days not sure what going on.
So sorry for the loss. Turkeys are really tough to get started and are more fragile than chicks. Even with the best brooder management, they still die for no apparent reason. Hang in there, keep them clean, warm, dry and plenty of food and water. Once they get a few weeks on them, they are pretty tough animals. Appreciate ya'll watching.

If you are keeping turkeys, provide them with a high protein feed. Typically a “game bird” starter is sufficient. You want between 24-28% protein. If you can’t find that, use a regular chick starter and supplement with some hard boiled eggs, ground beef or meal worms. That should work fine. Thanks for watching.

Can you grow your own chicken feed using corn
If you wanted to grow meat turkeys for ground meat, how would you go about processing them?
We do a batch for ground every year. Just grow them out like normal for 14-16 weeks or so. Process and cut all the meat off the bones. It’s a little tedious at first but you get quicker with time. Get a good grinder and package in 1lb packs. We grind and package white meat, dark meat and skin.
And it’s very popular!!!
Any ideas for starting up a processing business and government requirements
I think that is "ripe for the picking" right now with more and more people getting into raising their own birds. Most will not have the equipment to do it. Zara Boss sure. You can pick them up with your hands. Be sure you wash your hands before handling the eggs.
I recently got four turkey poults and three have passed, the one left is acting very tired and dormant, is there anything I can do to keep it going?
Make sure it’s plenty warm with a heat lamp or warming plate. What are you feeding?
@@SheratonParkFarms currently it has lukewarm water, and chick crumbles. I'm boiling some eggs because I heard that doing that supplements their protein needs. My girlfriend is out looking for turkey started.
If you can find a gamebird starter that is around 28% try that. They do need a higher protein.

When my turkeys hatch, they are sprawled legged. They can’t walk and end up dying. What is my problem??
brenda east what type of bedding material are you using in your brooder? Sounds like splay leg. Happens when bedding material is slippery like newspaper. It also could be an issue with incubation and the temp not being right.
I have raised chickens, ducks, geese and we now have guineafowl. Now turkeys. To be honest in the past we just have turkey chicks to a broody chicken hen and let her do the work. They survived way more with a mama. When we got turkey chicks this time and I told my husband get twise as many as you want because they drop dead easily. I love turkeys they are my favorite. My question is which poop would be best for our garden. Would the turkey be best? We have horse,, chicken, duck, guinea fowl, and turkey?
bckkm Any of them would be good. I’d mix with some carbon, like wood chips and let it compost for a while before putting it in the garden. Turkey poop is great as a direct application on grass!!
