Considering myself a beginner on the guitar (piano is my main). Apart from these excersises being really good to get some familiarization with the fretboard, giving you plenty of building blocks and phrases to use in soloing, or just improving your technique (or even just warming up), I think the value in this book is tying the tab to the notation because it forces a particular way of playing a certain phrase instead of leaving it just open to interpretation when being just confronted with a score/transcription. The kind of choices Pat makes when playing but also tying in with one of his fundamental opinions on playing the guitar: you have to be able to make use of the full neck and pull off any kind of phrase from any kind of position. Some of the more awkward choices not only help to develop your dexterity but also to employ the full potential of the fretboard and not let yourself be limited by what is familiar and easy/obvious.
