  • Peter Vryonis discusses the breakout star Jackson Merrill who is leading the San Diego Padres to great success this season. He is the favorite to take home rookie of the year honors in the National League despite a great season from Paul Skenes.

    It's funny you call the Padres the Clippers of the MLB. The Clippers used to be a San Diego team from 1978 to 1984, and they've recently announced very quietly that they're moving their G-League Team to San Diego and rebranding as the San Diego Clippers.
    That said, Merrill should win the Rookie of the Year award, but I feel that the people who decide that have drunk too much of the Skenes Kool-Aid and are going to crown him regardless of how well anyone else does in the league.

    I was watching one game and was like, man, would be great if they would load the bases and Merrill would clear them. Then it happened. Then another game I was like, "he can't hit ANOTHER HOMER to save us" (this was like after he had just done it like twice in the last week), and then he did it. And then yesterday I was just laughing my ass off after he walked it off. It's getting to that point where it's just absurd. The Barrell for ROTY!

    East cost bias it does exist Merril should win the rookie of the year and they should have 2 awards position and pitcher.

    • @BatFan1
      @BatFan1 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Disagree. Sometimes rookie pitchers deserve the award when there isnt a position player that stands out. You can have a pitcher with a 13-5 record with sub 3 ERA and 250-ish Ks that deserves the award over an every day player that batted .240 with 10 HR and 50 RBI. However this isnt the case, Skenes is having a great season but he didnt start the season, might barely win 10 games and his team is going knowhere, meanwhile Merrill is in the middle of a division race where the top 3 teams are playing at almost the same pace, and his impact has been felt FAR more than Skenes impact on the Pirates. His clutch play is literally historic.

    I heard a comparison the other day and it really is making a lot of sense to me: Derek Jeter.
    Jeter from the moment he put on the Yankee uniform was a leader and also had the clutch factor to him that proved pivotal in the playoffs as evident by the 5 rings.

    This is not the best Padre team in franchise history. They're NOT catching the dodgers.
    Best they can do is get either of the three WC spots.
    Currently they have a five game lead on the Mets with 29 games left.
    They'd have to go 23-6 in their final 29 to match the 1998 98 wins that team had.
    That's not happening. As to the best rookie. Without question he's the best rookie in the National League, but he won't win it because of the bias with pitchers against position players.
    Check out Devin Williams rookie year and tell me those numbers were better than any other rookie that year.
    Merrill is a real good baseball player. He doesn't need a plaque that says ROY on it.

      Currently 3.5 games back. Dodgers have 3 vs the D-Backs and 3 vs the Padres late in the season. They could very well get knocked out of first from that, and the Padres end the season against the D-Backs. There's absolutely a path to win the division there.
