I love this song! How a 10 year old boy was able to see value in a person, when no one else did. Reminder to always look for the good! I’m was born & raised in GA.

It is not a real story about a specific man. It is a real story about the music and musicians who influenced and inspired them growing up in the South.

It is real story about black guy at local store where Ronnie growed up.

    • @jeffbolton9699

Actually the main inspiration for this song was Rickey Medlockes grandpa. In the beginning Ronnie and the boys would go to pick up Rickey to practice, Shorty Medlocke would be sitting on the porch playing. So that was the initial inspiration and they decided to incorporate all the different influences they had.

The person who collected soda bottles was Gene Odom. This was his favorite song bc Ronnie alluded to him in it.

i saw them june 16th 1977 at nassau coliseum live...a little over 4 months later they were gone...a few survived the plane crash..ronnie came out with no shoes and planted his feet and didnt move..one of the best front men ive ever seen..im 64 years old and since then i have not even seen a tribute band not even his brother who looks just like him but in my eyes it would be a step backwards...once you reach the pinnacle you stay put and keep it in your heart...next do the ballad of curtis lowe...you should see the documentary on cable

This song resonates with me because when I was young there was an old black man living in his shack. He would let me come by and get a soda bottle so that I can take it down and get money for them. It changed me that I don't remember his name but he was a great man and he's always kind to us. And my mama never whupped us for going to see him

A classic of Southern blues-rock. Loved this song the first time I heard it 50 years ago. I had NO IDEA what the blues was... Lynyrd Skynyrd was actually my gateway drug to the blues tradition. Learned so much from this... and just carried on into my love of the blues. Curtis Loew is probably semi-fictional... but RIP, Mr. Curtis, you touched a lot of hearts.

This is the music of my youth, and you youngsters might not connect with all the references in the song. Collecting up soda bottles and taking them down to the country store was a way us kids used to get money. The glass bottles had a nickel or dime deposit paid on them at the time of purchase, and discarded bottles could be gathered up and exchanged for cash at the store.
