  • Hello Buddies
Recently there has been a surge in people filming the release of their budgies to the wilderness.
They are killing their birds unwillingly.
    THIS NEEDS TO STOP.
A captive bird will never survive in the wild.
Help share this video to spread the knowledge about this awful trend.
I do not own the rights for some videos/pictures in the video.

I was actually going to release my pet budgies because I felt like that was the right decision, but after watching this Ik I can’t let them go or else they’ll die. I’m really glade this video popped up cuz if I didn’t know about this, I would just let my birds go without knowing they would die within the day because of me

After 8 hours and 2°C outside at night, she wanted to switch trees and felt to ground. Could pick her up and take her back home. She was eating for 30 Minutes straight afterwards.
It was also kinda lucky that she was super aggressive and didn't got catched by the crows. My little budgie actually went to pursuit the crows and pigeons and all the hunters where scared of her.
She only lived 2 more months before dying at the age of 9. She was flying about 3-4km that day.

Sadly, I can. People dump their dogs and cats, and even horses, too. They release pet fish and reptiles into environments that animal isn't native to. In some cases it works out okay for the animals, but then they become an invasive species that needs to be culled (like the pythons in Florida's Everglades). For the most part, people who release pets don't know or don't care that they're sending their animal to a terrible death - they don't have to see it, so....
...... I really don't like people like that. If you can't care for an animal, get it a new home. There is a lot of help out there if you need it, and are willing to look for it (and it's usually not hard to find).

Domesticated budgies mean that they will never ever be able to survive in the wild, while wild budgies mean that forests and the outdoors is their literal home. you can't just free domesticated budgies in thoughts that you're helping them and that they can be free now, without knowing the actual thing first. A few weeks ago I was eating dinner when some movement catched my eye just outside my living room. There, stood on a tree, was a big bird (I still don't know if it was an eagle or something else) with a fluttering budgie in his mouth trying to break free from him. In a state of horror I dashed out to my balcony and threw a clothes peg at them to make the eagle let him go (it didn't hit them since they were a little bit further away from my house don't worry). The budgie broke free from him so he flew off right away. The eagle like bird was holding him in his beak by his wing so I very hopelessly hope that he didn't get injured badly and is alright. It was such a horrifying and devastating moment for me and I can't imagine what the budgie went through. To this day, I still can't get his helpless screams out of my head. I wish I could help him more than what I did but I couldn't. I have a budgie friend at my home and the thought of something similar happening to him is crushing me. Please please please be careful and never ever release your budgies thinking it is "good" for them. There are many dangers awaiting them in the wild and they are clearly not capable of dealing with them. The deadliest ones are starvation, predators such as cats and bigger bird species, injuries, diseases. Some may say what I did was intervening with "Nature's bussiness" but no it isn't. To begin with, they are domestic animals which are not supposed to live in that area. They don't know how to fend for themselves out in the wild. We took that capability from them long ago, breeding them in cages, and we can't expect them to survive by themselves now. So please DON'T RELEASE YOUR PETS INTO THE WILD. Take extreme measures such as installing fly screen on your windows and doors to prevent them from going out of your house by themselves. Love them and care for them properly. And if you think you can't, then don't even think about getting a pet in the first place! Lastly, don't buy, adopt!

@Dex Tiger just like any animal, some will have more trouble surviving than others, but it doesn't mean it can't 🤷🏽‍♂️ Navajo mountain dogs have been feral and surviving for quite a while. You don't think a terrier can survive? Or German shepherds? Rottweilers? Literally any hunting dog breed? Obviously they shouldn't but if anything I think we shouldn't have brought birds into cages far from their homeland in the first place 🤷🏽‍♂️ that's pretty damn cruel to me

It’s not like these birds even enjoy their short lived freedom. Birds that have lived all their life inside in a cage will likely find the outside world terrifying. Due to the limited space they have had to move around in all their life, they also have no where near the kind of stamina that wild birds have. They’ll be scared, tired and hungry before they die.

It was the middle of a winter(I live in the Northern Midwest), and the poor guy was about to freeze to death because he didn't have a coat made for the weather. I love her so much and I’m so worried about her, the second I heard the news of her flying away I broke down crying. I can’t control it. That’s the reason why these birds are pets only birds they aren’t like parrots they’re parakeets they are too small to survive with all the other wild birds and animals they don’t have the beaks for properly finding food in the wild I love how people think of they’re freedom but you can’t free pet only birds like budgies only if you got a wild rescue and bird that is also known for wild territory or you found a wild bird and was willing to set it free once again

My Budgie, Sheriff escaped last Easter 2021. She flew over to the next block and down the street....she was gone for about 7 hours. I didn't call anyone or know what to do. But ...a guy that works with Raptors lives a block over. He had seen me looking and found my budgie was at a neighbors home, thinking maybe it was mine. They brought her home. I love Sheriff more than anything,,, and so glad she is home. I've had her for 2 years and a bit....thank you for the video/ SOME survive here but not many, and not for long.

The things that ppl do just because its a trend is utterly shocking & appalling. Apparently its more important to be ‘cool’ than caring (and responsible). What’s next? Parents booting-out their 6 yr olds to live free & fend for themselves? Its not so different ‘freeing’ a pet bird. This is truly a very sad state of affairs. TYVM for this video. If it saves the life of one budgie, it’s value is priceless.

Last year, we found a pet budgie in our garden. She was so hungry and thirsty and exhausted, we didnt know if she would survive. With the help of the neighbourhood we managed and she survived. We got her everything she needed including birdfriends. But she only had a few months due to a heart disease. The doctor couldnt say for sure, but the disease might have been caused or at least worsened by what she had to go through. Even if the birds get rescued. They are scarred for life. Its incredibly sad.

Tips I remember to get a lost pet bird back in cage,1 put cage outside with water and food, 2 make sure not to scare the budgie(don't grab etc).3 the best way I've found to pick up an untrained/untrusting bird is to use a shirt (pref darker colors)to use like a fishing net they tend to do primarily sight or sound so be calm and understand they will not like this so do it in cases of nececessity. Hope it helps someone.

I am not sure that that half of these people are releasing their budgies out of the "goodness" of their hearts. It looked to me like some of them at least just wanted to get rid of their pets in the easiest way possible. It is horrible to see and horrible to know that there are monsters out there that do this consciously. Thank you for bringing this issue up I will share the video with everyone I know to spread the awareness.

That's why they are 'captive' bred and are mostly not captured from the wild. Their colours are mutations caused by captive breeding. Releasing them in the wild means death since they have literally no instincts of a wild budgerigar. Instead, bring one home, Take care of it and tame it so that your birdie will get the freedom to fly in your backyard and you will feel great to have the trust of your small furball.

theres also another bad outcome: budgies becoming invasive
if abunch of budgies are released in a area. they might start breeding, and that could be bad for native birds
budgies could eat all the food, spread disease, cause disruption and among other things,
the best thing you can do for your bird is to keep it

I agree what u said #Salvador #Budgie they really should not release budgies 2 the wild, and it 💯% really needs 2 stop releasing budgies 2 the wild. Cause if they can take care of budgies and don't want them anymore, then it's better 4 them 2 give the budgies 2 there families or friends if they wants birds in there lives. Quit releasing budgies 2 the wild, keep them or give them away 2 friends or families because wild does not take care of budgies.

This video made me cry, because my green cheek (in my avatar) escaped in 2016. I spent over two hours calling for her and walking the streets looking for her until I eventually heard her, but by the time I'd got permission to enter the person's backyard she had been killed by ravens. I cowardly ran away so I wouldn't have to continue looking at her body, bawling my eyes out. My ex (who is an ex for a reason!) was kind enough to collect her remains for me so I could have her cremated; no matter how badly that relationship ended up I am still forever thankful that he did that for me. Her ashes sit on my dressing table.
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but please don't release your bird. More likely than not you are condemning them to an awful, painful death. Hell, if you're in Melbourne (Australia) and feel like you have no other option but to release your bird, get in contact with me because I'd rather take it in myself than see the results of another pet bird released.

I found a beautiful goldface mauve opaline flying around with the rainbow lorikeets, I caught her but no one came for her so now she's happily living in my aviary with her 20 something new friends. She was definitely out there for more than a day but was protected by the lorikeets.
