This movie was originally intended to be released on HBO Max but was upgraded to a theatrical release. The idea was to make a series of mid budget super hero films including Batgirl, Zatanna and the Wonder Twins with Blue Beetle being the only one that wasn't canceled by WB. I personally don't understand studio strategies but WB seems to be all over the place with theirs and it's no coincidence these products keep under performing.
I think it was a mixture of trying to bring in the sales of Mexican/Latino audiences and that they can use Blue Beetle for a young justice League super film
I think the strategy was make and release them straight to HBOMax to get people to the app, but then ownership of WB changed for the umpteenth time in 5yrs and the new owner said, "How can we get out of this mountain of billions of dollars worth of debt?" then scrapped what was deemed poor quality to make back some of that money.
When Discovery bought Warner, the CEO David Zaslav said all movies they'll make will have a theatrical release then put on HBO Max after a while. When Batgirl was in screen testing period it had reactions so bad they thought it was not worthy of a big screen release so decided to can it.
Zatana movie would've actually been a great concept....

The bad dude's memory flashbacks, going through his whole life backwards, did show his memory getting wiped, it just happens real fast in between a bunch of other memories, but it's there in the film and the scarab unlocked his memories for him, which does play nicely into the theory of the scarab using Jaime's dad to get him into bonding with it.
So, I live in Sonora where they supposedly emigrated from and the whole theater burst out laughing at the references like Rody arriving with La Chona at full blast.
I don't know if it was because of all the "mexicanadas" but everyone really seemed to enjoy it and sincerely I enjoyed it more than I expected.
I asked my dad if the new Spiderman ATM, Transformers ROTB, or this film was his favorite. He said Blue Beetle, and he was telling me that it was very 80's in production, pacing, and style.
His parents are from Mexico and he was born in 1969 in the US

Throwing it out there. Blue beetle not killing is a major point of his story. The scarab is supposed to be a killer with no regard for life. Jaime is supposed to pull it back over time. His refusal to kill isnt the issue, its that literally every other character kills instead of him. Plus they didnt do the scarab right initially. They’re supposed to argue when he tells it to pull back. Instead it essentially just goes “oh my bad!”

The movie never established why Jaime gets a power ranger-esque metal suit, while the previous ones had classic spandex superhero suits. Pretty sure Jaime is supposed to be the first beetle to actually activate the scarab, the others created tech so thier connection to it doesnt make a lot of sense
This reminds me of an old movie called Star Kid.......kid gets an alien suit of armor that is technically alive, gets locked in the suit, takes it fir a joyride, and at some point fights an alien who wants the tech for itself. It was a fun movie.
that is exactly what I was hoping to see from this film cause I went watching this film going blind, and at first it looked promising, then it gave me that vibe like it could be star kid, sadly it was mediocre at best, good for kids to watch but meh as an adult

About 10-15 minutes into the movie and all I hear from behind me is 1 of 3 little girls say “uh guys.. I don’t think this is an English speaking movie.”

I honestly disagree joe. As a person that doesnt know about Blue Beetle this movie literally had no issue for me. I had a fun time watching this show and not only that it got me tearing up at some points of the movie but i guess if people are hardcore DC fans i understand there opinion

God I remember watching the live action Guyver as a kid, loved how brutal and dark it was. It's a bit cheesey but still holds up well today. They should really make an up to date series.

I spoke with someone on twitter who was trying to secure the rights to Guyver and Robojox, he wanted to reboot both. We spoke about what we would each want from a rebooted live action and we both agreed that it has to be practical effects makeup and costume over CGI. Don't want to get hopes up, who knows if anything comes of it.
And not surprised they are negative I'm not saying they are always negative but they are just to harsh this movie was fantastic and had a amazing emotional impactful story. It's not generic they have no idea what they are talking about like 80 percent of the time
Yeah I love blue beetle in young Justice, and the DCAU, such a killer character! Also injustice, and in the comics. I am looking forward to seeing it.

Jamie not wanting to kill is actually an integral part of his character. It’s not being a pacifist coward, it’s staying true to how the character is
He does not mind to kill or at least cripple the goons in the castle. The problem with non lethal weapons also in real life is that they are much more often used and hurt people seriously. Just because they not kill 100% does not mean there is a 0% death rate using non lethal weapons

It's a superhero movie, Blue Beetle is a DC character, yet people are still surprised when they don't kill, Superheroes don't kill since like 1970's, it's not smart writing that should be praised, it's literally just common sense

I like this better than The Flash and Black Adam. Because those movies did nothing for me as far as story and DC morals go. So far, The Batman and Blue Beetle, keeps their moral code in check...the no killing rule. Which I like. I'd give this a 7/10...because I want this to deliver in the box office so we can get a sequel. IMO, it's a better start to the DCU re-franchise. IF Man of Steel and BvS and JL....can't make a billion...that's a problem. And those movies have the heavy hitters, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

Just got back from seeing it and I gotta say, despite the generic tropes, the movie was pretty dang good. Xolo nailed the role of Jaime and the humor and action was pretty solid and as a Mexican American myself, this is a nice presentation of Latino culture especially “family”. 8/10 in my book. A good fresh start to the DCU.
Thus movie is dumpster trash. It should had been called LA Familia and Blue Beetle because his family was fucking fighting his battles for him. Blue Beetle is a damn coward and a pussy. Yes I want there! He got papa killed because he refused to fight. Some hero.

No they just need people with a Vision to execute. All of this bs has had no end game at all. Just random throws of a dying animal. Even Star Wars has had zero plans. Major companies are not going for creatives, just people who check boxes (Look at Obi Wan show for instance, gave the Biggest IP and the Biggest characters ever created to a random person because she was female. And yes Kathleen literally said she gave Debrah Chow the seat because she wanted to "Nurture more female directors")

I’m surprised how much I enjoyed this, it isn’t perfect and has faults, but it was a fun flick with a lot of heart and a good balance of humor

I enjoyed the movie. It was a fun time. El Chapulín Colorado and Don Francisco appearing in the movie was great. Like another commenter, I was also the only one laughing when el Chapulín was on the security cameras😂
I don't know what movie you guys saw, but I just got out of seeing this film and I thought it was a blast! I thought the family dynamic worked really well, especially Nana, and I thought the action scenes were really good. I honestly think you guys were way too hard on this one, this was a harmless fun film that didn't really do much wrong. This is the first DC film in a while where I walked out smiling, I hope this character and his supporting cast come back in the future.
Xolo is a charismatic, likeable presence and I really hope they give him a chance to appear as Blue Beerle in future DCU films, or, in the Booster Gold tv series.
The problem isn't "didn't really do much wrong." Because you want to leave a movie going, "did so much right." Most of the action was pathetic. All at night, in the dark and poorly lit. And you highlight that "Nana worked really well" when it should be that "Jaime worked really well." Main character.
I'm glad you liked the movie. For real. These guys aren't saying it was "bad." They're saying, "It *wasn't* bad." But, they also *aren't* saying, "It was good."

Also while I understand why these guys didn't love it, it just seems weird to me that they seemingly gave The Flash a much better score when Blue Beetle is waaaaayyy better as a film from a filmmaking perspective.
Best Super Hero film I have seen in years. Great characters, a proper story, CGI polished, tears, laughter, action it had everything! Cinema I went to was half full which in this day and age is a good result! Loads more than I have seen for Marvel & DC movies over the last few years (apart from latest SM film) Popularity and Comic prices do not make a good film.....Antman 3 and Wakanda Forever were poor IMO.......Solid 9/10 for me. And I'm going to see it again........haven't done that since the 1980's

I love the Angry Joe show, but Wow. They have reached unbearable critic status. The movie isn't perfect but I think it's probably the best comic book film since now way home. At least a 7/10. If not a 8/10
I'm at a point where I don't go out to see these hero movies on day 1 in theater, I will be waiting for all of them to go on sale in the market when it comes

Thanks for shouting out The Guyver. “Guyver: Dark Hero” was the gateway that got me into Anime. I watched the live action and then went on to get all the VHS tapes of the 90’s “Guver: Bio-Booster Armour” series, then the reboot in the 2000’s. It’s still one of my favourite anime franchises to this day!
Man, hearing about Chapolin Colorado brings back a lot of memories. It was a big success in Brazil in the 80s/90s.

Spoilers:
Agree with the missed opportunities for better jokes but only one stood out and it was the one Alex mentioned about the name Jaime. Definitely could have been written better. It was just awkward during that part. Didn’t make sense.
I disagree on some of their major gripes.
1. The sister. Maybe they forgot what having a sibling is like or a relative that you’re close to. Maybe they are single children. I never heard of Joe having a brother or sister. So I won’t hold it against them that they didn’t like that the sister was annoying. But that’s literally what it’s like. The sister reminded me of my cousin that I’m really close to. She makes fun of me, a bit abrasive, yet we are able to have moments where we talk about real shit and she tells me what I need to hear not what I want to hear. So the sister was written and acted perfectly. You’re suppose to be in jaime’s shoes and be annoyed with him or embarrassed with him.
The family helping out in the end. It felt a lot like spy kids with the gadgets and I have fond memories of spy kids so it wasn’t a problem for me I thought it was fun and made sense. Jaime is in trouble, no one else is gonna help. Only the family really knows what’s going on. So it made sense to me that the family is going to try to help Jaime. They realize they need weapons so they arm up.

You guys definitely have seen too many movies to expect a young person straight out of college with a good heart to instantly drop bodies even if he’s in danger. He’s going to try his best to disarm and incapacitate them rather than kill. That’s the whole point of blue beetle. I won’t fault you guys for not knowing much about blue beetle but the sound wave blasters are comic accurate, the staple blasters have been used in animated shows. I think you guys came into the movie with the wrong mindset if you expected blue beetle to be a killer instantly and be bad ass right away in his origin movie.
What I agree with is, yeah the rest of the family do kill. I don’t think the sister killed though, just the grandma and Rudy.
I agree that some of the action was filmed in a way that I missed some things.
I just feel some of the complaints were from a perspective of not relating to the character or having prior information on the character. Which could be the fault of the writer and director for not setting it up properly.
For an origin movie it did its job. I want to see more blue beetle. Didn’t have moments that were memorable but it lays the groundwork for there to be epic moments in the future. I teared up when the dad died. I’d give it a 6/10 if I’m being critical I’ll have to see it again in imax to fully experience the movie. But as of right now it’s slightly above average to me, blue beetle looked really cool and the action scenes were cool as well.
This has been one of the best DC movies for me, way better than the last 3 movies at least

BB was great and the fight scene are really good imo. Shazam was way lighter and shazam 2 was trash just like black adam. He got bossed around by a kid and his mother. Atom and cyclone were useless throught the movie.

This is a super watered down family centric version of Guyver. If only we can have a new live action Guyver with half of the budget this film had - hell even bring back David Hayter as cameo 😂

Upon activation the artifact face hugs the teen donning him with armor capable of producing powerful swords and blaster weapons (blue beetle). The teen communicates and summons the armor through nodes on his back (blue beetle lol) . The teen is constantly forced into battle to protect his family by an evil organisation who wants the alien device for themselves. Sound familiar? Lol

If MCU did not exist this movie would be great, like weaker 7/10, but MCU does exist so when you are watching it you are just going down a mental list of checkboxes as they are following the typical MCU formula in the movie, you know basically exactly what will happen next, how will it end and all that making this a weak 5/10. If DCU wants to get back up on its feet it needs to realize that by copying the very tired marvel formula won't help them, not even marvel can pull of marvel formula anymore, they need to actually take some risks and trad some new territory. Look at spiderverse as an example, it's an amazing movie and a simple proof that people don't have superhero fatigue, just cliché marevel formula and trope-fest fatigue.
Guess it’s good to have MCU then if this would’ve been considered “better”. You know what is actually even better then the MCU? The Bruce Timm Animated universe.

“Blue Beetle” arrives as DC is struggling to stay alive after a series of flops, cleaning house and revamping its famous comic book titles to course correct. In all the turnover, they’d be smart to keep Jaime Reyes and Xolo Maridueña around.

Biggest issue with the movie was not fleshing out the villain woman more and the scarab origins, imagine if they added the reach origins and the moral dilemma of saving the earth vs handful of ppl for the villain prospective and Jaime has to make a choice to sacrifice himself for the greater good like the villain kept saying but no they didn't?? But then they do that for the villain guy? If you can for that, why not for her? This way it's not generic and unique! And then the bind with the scarab would mean more
The good thing about the movie (mainly if your Hispanic who have Spanish speaking family members) is that you can watch it with ya older parents or grandparents and they will enjoy it and gives ya something to talk about

If this is the new start of the DCU it's their Thor 1. It's not bad and it's not great either just your average movie where you get introduced to a character you might or not know. 5/10

Perfect timing. Just got out the theater like an hour ago. Good movie. Some issues ofc but a good movie overall. Had extremely low expectations so maybe that helped.

Generic and pointless movie of a superhero very few people are familiar with and poorly executed storyline but they fixed it so well in post that it seem competently done.
What's his name? Blue Scarab? Blue Beetle was revealed to be an earlier hero and this protagonist was never explicitly named. And what are his ill defined powers? Nano-tech based Green Lantern style powers?
When the movie ended I suddenly remembered, what happened to the giant concrete ball that they were trying to open at the beginning? Presumably it contained the McGuffin, the Blue Scarab, but it was later revealed that the father Ted gave Victoria the scarab. So when did the opening scene happened? And Carapax already have the exoskeleton implanted in that scene.
The real novelty of this movie is really the setting, a Hispanic superhero, everything else has been done before

I haven’t seen the movie yet but based on the trailers, I wish the suit was more like the Blue Beetle in Young Justice, where the suit has a mind of its own, and it has very savage tendencies and Hime has to try to keep it under control.

Had to pause, one thing about the "Jaime" name joke. As a Mexican myself, people WILL mispronounce your name after you tell them. People mispronounce Jose all the time but it's fairly common knowledge that it's not pronounced Josay. My name is Raúl, i introduce myself, rolled r accent on the "u" and everything, and people still say "Rawl" back to me.

That's a big pet peeve of mine. I'm black but grew up in a majority Mexican American town in Texas and I hated when my friend Lupe kept getting called Loopy after repeatedly telling ppl how to pronounce it
I’m all about culture but the minute they start bringing a family to back up a hero I get pulled out like Shazam. They’re meant to be a hero for a reason and you’re not making me understand why.
I dislike this as well. I want to watch the HERO be the hero, not the HERO's family and the hero.
Whilst I get where you're coming from it helps to show that the hero is still fallible and in Blue Beetles case its to show the overall message that its his family that makes him strong and not weak, which I will say is kind of spoon fed and I will definitely take that as a decent criticism of the movie from a script writing standpoint but yeah.

I liked this movie quite a bit. It’s generic and then again it does it well. The villains were meh but I could excuse that as everything else was just good. Solid 8/10

My 9 years old son and nieces laugh out loud several times while watching the Flash movie but they all very quite during this movie, so I don’t think even kids gets the jokes. Both my sister and brother in law cried twice though 😬 so at least they found the movie somewhat emotional…

@@marmalar mine passed from brain cancer and didn’t know who we were at the end. I watched Black Panther a little after he passed and I couldn’t stop crying during or after. This one made me cry like 3 times, especially because he reminded me so much of my dad. Definitely pulls on the heart strings

I knew that kid would deliver. He’s great in Cobra Kai. And he’s the only reason I wanna see it. But ticket prices are too expensive here in NYC. A family of 4 ends up paying close to $100. It’s hard to justify that if the movie isn’t going to be exceptional. I want to support this kid being his first lead in a movie, but I don’t know.

i ended up liking this movie. to me it was a average movie. 5 out 10 , to me. but i ended up liking most of it anyway. even the villains ended up working enough, in my opinion. the main villain reminded me of Hela on Thor Ragnarok. she's evil just cause she's evil and that's it but the actress is so good, in my opinion, that i ended up thinking that the main villain worked well enough. definitely not totally forgetable villains. atleast not to me. i'm brazilian and Bruna Marquezine did a good job as Jenny Kord on this movie, in my opinion she's brazilian too. i don't think that this movie will do good at all in the box office. i think it was nice to hear you guys thoughts on this movie.

Blue Beetle seemed like a terrible hero that didn't ever earn being called a hero.
Who cares that a piece of AI technology picked him? What was the message of this movie? Is it that unearned title of superhero equals absolutely terrible hero? Because if that is the message, it worked.
I absolutely loved Blue Beetle it is one of my favorite super hero movies of the year. I loved it way more than the flash as much as I loved Shazam Fury of the gods I liked Blue Beetle a little more. So far Blue Beetle is my second favorite superhero movie I have seen so far. It deserves a sequel.

Ultimately, Blue Beetle is a staple simple origin story but one about family(Dom Toretto would love it). It’s a melting pot of Spider-Man, Ironman, Coco, and a little bit of a 90s vibe. An entertaining watch and I’d be down to see where the story goes.

I really liked it! I think there's some tonal problems in the climax, but it was a solid movie with a good family story at the heart of it. The highlight was the acting from the family and Jenny though. What a cast! Everyone was great. Dad does a great job of being the guiding compass in the climax. George Lopez was HILARIOUS. The sister was the most forgetable character, but the actress did a good job and was entertaining. Nana was my favorite character in the 3rd act, and the emotion from the mother after the dad died was heart wrenching. And Xolo was incredible, that man has charisma out the ears. Bruna was great as Jenny, and the chemistry between her and Xolo was palpable.
Overall, probably the best thing the mainline DC universe has done. It and the first Shazam were the only good things they made, and I think this edges out Shazam just on the strength of performances.
Thanks for the Guyver shoutout. Yes this was a miss for me. It should of been darker with Guyver like body horror. The AI should of stayed male and scary and not Alexa\Siri who becomes good so quickly. They made the same mistake with Shazam dragging the family throughout. Family was killing dudes left and right and Jaimie killed none. Would of been nice for a kill and have some guilt. The midcredit didn't get me excited at all. Should of had a lfashback with Kord and the last host being defeated and losing the beetle.

Blue beetle is a bottom of the barrel super hero and nobody cared about him until he was teamed up with booster gold in a comedy series run...now if this was james gunn who made guardians, suicide squad and peacemaker it would actually be good and I'd go see it because he's the master of deep cuts and obscure characters.

Yeah the bad guy going from psychotic to merciful after being shown his memories was dumb.
I think it's because he showed him mercy which helped him see the error in his ways, besides Konrad was always apathetic towards Victoria Kord and was only really working for her so he could benefit from the Omac system, and he probably had more respect for Jaime at that point and so decided to kill her off instead, with him saying Victoria's line showing that he was still a flawed individual.
This was actually a very enjoyable movie. Anybody who wants an actual good hero movie that doesn't try to place itself in a bigger universe would love this. These guys exaggerate some of the cons too.
