My wife and I bought our 2013 BRZ in July of 2012…one of only 6 available on the west coast at the time. The first 6 years, we lived in San Diego…and made 8 major road trips from there. Yosemite, Utah, Arizona, Oregon…the red woods, 101 from Oregon/California border to SD. During that time, it includes hours of commuting each day on California freeways. We have lived and driven through toooooons of snow (PROPER winter tires are key), torrential rain in the PNW…hot sunny summers in the southwest. Anyhow, in the 11 years we have owned our little underpowered turd, we put 100,000 miles in 6 years, 5,000 miles in the last 5 years. We have gone through 6 sets of tires, from all seasons to Michelin Pilots. The J02 recall at 90,000 miles…4 spark plugs and 1 water pump. Recently replaced the suspension with RSR springs, Bilstein B6, Whiteline bushings, StopTech brake kit, YellowStuff, stainless lines…anyways, we love our BRZ and will never get tired of it, or stop smiling when we back out the driveway. Maintenance and CARE are all a car needs to last for yeeeeeears. Torque dip aside, we wouldn’t trade it for the world! FA20 FoLife!!! Proud of Boxer❤
I love that the car is”compliant” too. Even when you are spanking the car on Sunday morning backroads, they are seldom “track smooth” and the new car has a supple fluidity that the Gen 1 lacked. When you keep a car light and make the body stiff, then you can make the suspension relatively soft without making the handling unruly. Lotus have always ridden well. Ditto Alpine, MX5/Miata. Sports cars don’t need to be punishingly uncomfortable.

Good thing my ass is relatively narrow because the seats are tight. Not Cadillac quiet but not obnoxiously loud either at 75mph. Rides well, a perfect balance I think between ride and handling for public roads. Climate control system is excellent. Too much buffeting to have the windows all the way down at highway speeds. I am in my early 50's, have arthritis and am anemic. Because of this I find my limit in this car is about 2.0-2.5 hours before I have to get out and stretch or I start to cramp up. If I was 19 again I would drive all day til the petrol ran out. Speaking of which, I averaged 34.4 mpg for the whole trip. My previous longest run, again primarily highway and done in two 110 mile stints averaged 34.9 mpg with fewer stops so it seems pretty consistent. I tend to keep it within 5 mph of the posted limit. Will be taking a solo camping trip in September that will include a longer driving stint. Have already test fitted my camping gear and it all fits nicely even if it is more stuff than I would like to carry. Not as young as I used to be so I can't completely rough it anymore. You should take the highlander out for a road trip next time! It’s a great road trip car (though with the V6 only avg’s around 26 mpg). Took it from NJ to Texas and back (~5000 miles) and it was great!
Only thing I would disagree with are the seats, which obviously is very subjective. In my case, they are hands-down the most uncomfortable seats I've ever had, and I'm coming from a '19 WRX and a '16 before that, which both had super comfortable seats. I'm 5'10" 190 lbs, so not huge, but not tiny either, and I do have wide hips for a guy(even when I was 150 lbs I still had a 36" waist). That said, the seat bottom bolsters were way too snug and hard for these seats - to the point that they were making my leg go numb and becoming painful after only about 15 mins in the car. Ended up have to remove the bolster support wires and most of the bolsters themselves, replacing them with super soft filler in order to keep the seat shape. Now, they're significantly better and tolerable, but still not the best. Never had to modify seats like this in 35+ years of driving. Good enough to hold out for better aftermarket seats though, which for me at least, are necessary.
Have you checked out Michelin's CrossClimate2 tires. I put them on my Camry hybrid this spring and I really love them. I would love to see a skid path test done with them. They are really quiet, and they ignore the wet on pavement. Tempted to put them on my BRZ when it arrives.
That and available supply. I have a '17, so still get regular emails and slug mail from the dealer. Of course they are always trying to tempt me with "how much my used car is worth", but they have also notified me that they are sold out of '22 BRZ's and if I was so inclined, could put down a deposit on a '23. Think I'd like to actually drive one before putting money down.

Did a 500 mile road trip and overall it is good. Road noise is manageable imo. I did have some lower back pain though but not sure if it’s just me not used to riding in those seats on long trips. I usually don’t have much back issues with other cars though. The Apple CarPlay issue is annoying when you are in an area with no signal. Sometimes Google maps stops navigation so you won’t be able to load back the map you were on if you don’t have signal.
It seems like there is a huge range for what people are getting MPG wise. I've been averaging 20-22 with a mix of city/highway driving fairly conservatively. Best I have managed is 24. I'm at >5000 ft though, that could be playing a part.
totally - best I've managed is 24.5 with 50/50 mix of freeway and LA city (stop n go), it's usually around 20-22 mpg driving pretty conservative with 20/80 freeway/city mix.
Im absolutely torn between a BRZ GR86 or Civic Si with the HPD package, the civic has the BOSE audio with the full safety suite whereas the twins are RWD but are lacking a decent audio system and a active safety suite in the MT models. Given that I already have a NC1 Miata I’m thinking it’ll still scratch my RWD itch if I go with the Si
@@hendersonli6594 you people really need to calm down with the RWD only crap. There's other cars that are fantastic and don't need rwd to be fun. You don't have to slide everywhere
Fuel economy is always important, so thanks for covering that. I'm tired of these clowns why say "it's a sports car. If you want good fuel economy, buy a (fill in econo-box of choice)". This sentiment is just idiotic in my opinion. Even in a pickup truck, fuel economy is a major factor to anyone who wants to save money at the pump. Rant aside, I am currently cross shopping the BRZ Limited and the Miata GT soft top, both in manual, and thanks to discounts that are available to me, both cars would be excellent deals. The Miata would wind up being about $2000 more than the BRZ, but the Miata's drop top more than compensates for that price premium in my opinion. The much improved and bargain priced BRZ can't be ignored though.

I am still surprised they want to gear this car so aggressively that it turns well over 3000rpm at 75mph in sixth. Pretty much the same 6th gear as my ND2's 2.0L, and I already thought that car was silly overgeared. I'm sure the excessive revs contribute to a lightweight, aerodynamic car with a 2.4L getting official fuel economy ratings much worse than you would expect.
I prefer for cars with smaller engines to keep the revs higher in top gear. I'll gladly pay the price in lost mpg to avoid lugging. My NB1 Miata turned 4k at 70 mph, and I'll admit, it took some getting used to. Once I got used to it, I didn't want to go back.
@@jayjacaty3009 I just don't think it's necessary gearing in a modern car. That engine (like the Miata) has considerable mid-range torque, and 6th gear is not used in a sporty fashion. I say keep the first 5 gears close ratio, and let 6th be a real highway gear. There's no way this engine would lug at 2700rpm at 75, unless you're going up a 10% grade. It's a big MPG penalty that just saves you from downshifting to 5th a couple times on a road trip.
@@thatoneotherotherguy Agree! It's such a stupid design, most of the modern 6 speed manuals are similar in this regard. My 2022 WRX at least stays at 3000 at 80. But that's still much too high!!!

How does this car do in the snow? I’d like a fun daily driver but being from Colorado I’m not sure… how does it do in Michigan if I’m correct on your location
I live in Minnesota and run 17" Michelin X-Ice Snows on it, driving with no difficulty. Took delivery in mid-January and had to drive it for 3 days on the Pilot Sport 4's before the snow shoes arrived. 5th gear in the driveway is not fun. Did not get the opportunity to use it in any big storms with heavy snow as we didn't get any but on a few inches of fresh snow, hard pack, or ice I could drive it no problem at all. Got along better than the folks around me using all-seasons I thought.
What tyres do you recommend that are quiter than the pilot sport 4? Are the 5 any better for NVH? I have the 4s on my Hyundai Elantra nline premium and they do seem loud on highway
@@TheTopher NVH was a big problem with the 18" Michelin tires for me. After 1 month, I replaced them with Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus. Much quieter. Very satisfied with the all season tires.
I'm also curious about the difference in BRZ vs GR86 for road manners. Does the BRZ make the better road trip car, even with what are likely minor suspension differences?
Agree with all of your points. Car is really good on the highway. Very stable at high speeds and comfortable. Love the seats/driving position for long hauls. Noise from the primacys is the only thing that keeps it from being a perfect cruiser but even that isn't too bad.

Id gladly appreciate it
You find any bad tire wear with that much inflation on the tyres? I’ve never gone over 32-ish but if I can go over and get better mileage w/o bad tyre wear I’d be all for it!
Nah, the BRZ is so light that tires really don't wear out as much as you'd expect. I had to work hard to wear down the Primacy's on my 2014 BRZ and even then I could only get them down to 50% tread by the time I sold the car in 2020.
Stoptech 600 fluid and Porterfield R4s pads weren't enough to avoid fade on a 90º track day - just swapped on DBA4000 rotors so I'll report back soon on how that does. That combo worked perfectly on my 2014.
love the car, but what pisses me off, is that they make this car for younger 'enthusiasts', and they put in a dreadful, awful stereo and infotainment. An automotive engineer will tell you that the cost difference between putting trash in a car, and a properly designed system is about $15 per vehicle. Yup.

A surprisingly car indeed, Mr. Topher...

5:46 so true brother. So true
Have you checked out Michelin's CrossClimate2 tires. I put them on my Camry hybrid this spring and I really love them. I would love to see a skid path test done with them. They are really quiet, and they ignore the wet on pavement. Tempted to put them on my BRZ when it arrives.
Sounds great, wish I could get one for MSRP. Dealers raising its price by 10k means its not in my price range.
that's crazy, there are dealers out there selling for msrp
That and available supply. I have a '17, so still get regular emails and slug mail from the dealer. Of course they are always trying to tempt me with "how much my used car is worth", but they have also notified me that they are sold out of '22 BRZ's and if I was so inclined, could put down a deposit on a '23. Think I'd like to actually drive one before putting money down.
@@jonasbaine3538 they're not within 100 miles of my location buddy. I have a website with lists of dealers and what they charge in your area, I'm not going on a mini road trip for a car that's at the high end of my price range.

Just did a road trip NYC to Raleigh and back. 1100 miles. 2020 Accord 2.0 Sport. Fully stock, 29mpg on 93..Trying to convince my gf to get this car or the Si
Looks like a chill highway vehicle!
Twice I drove my 2013 Frs cross country. Awesome car but man it was rough.
I get google offline map loaded especially in predictable low signal areas. Works well then. No traffic updates though
Not crazy about the round fish eye mirrors, just adjust the mirrors out more to eliminate blind spots and use the rear view mirror for the rest.
1:05 thought I saw Cydia on your home screen for a sec lol
It seems like there is a huge range for what people are getting MPG wise. I've been averaging 20-22 with a mix of city/highway driving fairly conservatively. Best I have managed is 24. I'm at >5000 ft though, that could be playing a part.
I'm pretty sure Savagegeese reported similar gas mileage.
No boxer engine gets good MPG expect low 20s unless you're all freeway 65 cruise control then high 20's
totally - best I've managed is 24.5 with 50/50 mix of freeway and LA city (stop n go), it's usually around 20-22 mpg driving pretty conservative with 20/80 freeway/city mix.
Thanks for the update on your car!!
This car proved to the world that you don't need a 6 figure price tag on a car to enjoy the drive.
7:40 its already doing over 3k rpms so definetly in the power in 6th. how is the fuel economy with it geared like that?
I love the GR86, I want one.
It's cool to see a TH-camr from metro Detroit lived here my whole life 😁
I wonder what those same road trip MPG would’ve been with the RPF’s? Ive found ultra light wheel/tire setups on my 2018 Civic increased about 2 MPG.
I wish the limited car came with 17s like the previous model
Did you not have any anxiety road tripping without a spare tire?
Im absolutely torn between a BRZ GR86 or Civic Si with the HPD package, the civic has the BOSE audio with the full safety suite whereas the twins are RWD but are lacking a decent audio system and a active safety suite in the MT models. Given that I already have a NC1 Miata I’m thinking it’ll still scratch my RWD itch if I go with the Si
Nah u need rwd
If you have a miata, get the 4 door si, and way better gas
Rwd always
@@hendersonli6594 you people really need to calm down with the RWD only crap. There's other cars that are fantastic and don't need rwd to be fun. You don't have to slide everywhere
If its a daily driver, civic si. If its for autocross/track, then brz/gr86.
6:23 can confirm, all four 18" rims on my gti are currently bent.
How is the stereo system? You touched on carplay which sounds typical, but how are the speakers and such?
The blind spot monitor on the new cars is actually better than those mirrors.
I thought it was a silly gimmick at first but have come to absolutely depend on those blond spot monitors. They see stuff before I do.
@@MFitz12 1st gen driver assists basically were gimmicks but after 15 or so years of them, engineers have dailed them in to such a level that yah they are way better then silly little glue on mirrors lol.
When you mention winter tires, do you swap & keep same rims on for winter?
Have you had issues with flying rocks on the windshield? I got multiple scratches on mine and had to get it replaced because of 2 large cracks
Worried about dailying this thing since Im not used to something with more road feel + road noise. Feel like after a year+ of it I might get tired and look to sell/trade.
If you’re playing music does the display screen show the album cover?
Drove mine all day today. Absolute pleasure💨
God I miss those Michigan on ramps…
Thanks for the advice on the blind spot mirror
Hey Chris! Been around for a long long time, I had a 2013 that I bought mainly because of your brz! I am trying to decide between ordering a 23 brz or a GR86. I just wanted to ask you if you could tell the difference between the two in terms of throttle response/ rev-hang? I’ve seen the graph showing the GR86 tune closes the throttle faster and I can’t find anyone who has driven them both and noticed a difference?

How tall are you just curious because I’m thinking of getting a car like this and I’m damn near 6’4 and I’m still growing
I’m 6’3 150 lbs and most of that height is legs, my dad is 6’3 240 lbs mostly torso and we both fit in here comfortably
5'10, but you'll fit fine at 6'4, I have a buddy who daily drives his FR-S and is 6'4
I am 6'3" and kept growing well into my 20s. If you are still growing you might want to lease a car rather than buying one.
@@michaelwakim2198 u would look like a walking stick at only 150

I’ll willingly sacrifice a few MPG for a nice close ratio gearbox. I would hate to see it geared like a Cayman!
I would expect much better fuel economy from a light weight NA car, compared to Supra 2.0T.
You shouldn't expect a 2.4 NA to be more efficient than a 2.0 turbo
I have a 2016 brz and was considering buying 2022 suspension to improve ride comfort, would you say its a major difference between your older brz? P.s Love watching all your reviews btw, any plans to review the 2024 sonata n line?

Weird question... Does anyone know the actual dimensions of the trunk opening? 16,000 miles on my daily brz 🌚🌚 did a couple road trips hehe fun car
Continental ExtremeContact Sport is a great option
@@TheTopher oh yes I think they have that contisilent foam in them that helps. I'll check them out. Thanks man
@@TheTopher NVH was a big problem with the 18" Michelin tires for me. After 1 month, I replaced them with Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 Plus. Much quieter. Very satisfied with the all season tires.

The GR86 ride a lot rougher?
I'm also curious about the difference in BRZ vs GR86 for road manners. Does the BRZ make the better road trip car, even with what are likely minor suspension differences?
A little bit but drastically a big difference.
Agree with all of your points. Car is really good on the highway. Very stable at high speeds and comfortable. Love the seats/driving position for long hauls. Noise from the primacys is the only thing that keeps it from being a perfect cruiser but even that isn't too bad.

you should get an exhaust for it !!
You find any bad tire wear with that much inflation on the tyres? I’ve never gone over 32-ish but if I can go over and get better mileage w/o bad tyre wear I’d be all for it!
Can easily do 36psi without issue. I do that with my daily highway commuter. No abnormal tire wear for me
Nah, the BRZ is so light that tires really don't wear out as much as you'd expect. I had to work hard to wear down the Primacy's on my 2014 BRZ and even then I could only get them down to 50% tread by the time I sold the car in 2020.
Dang, my 2001 Miata 1.8l VVT with a 3.9 6-speed manual and 200tw tires aired up to 34lbs I get like 25-26mpg when I'm doing mostly highway trips.
Yeah I have the same android auto disconnecting problem in my gr86,
What brake pads are you running for your track days? I'm currently prepping mine and I'm unsure on what to use.
Not sure about tophers set up, but savagegeese has a video on the track set up theyre using including pads and fluid
Stoptech 600 fluid and Porterfield R4s pads weren't enough to avoid fade on a 90º track day - just swapped on DBA4000 rotors so I'll report back soon on how that does. That combo worked perfectly on my 2014.
How is the sound system quality?
meh
love the car, but what pisses me off, is that they make this car for younger 'enthusiasts', and they put in a dreadful, awful stereo and infotainment. An automotive engineer will tell you that the cost difference between putting trash in a car, and a properly designed system is about $15 per vehicle. Yup.
Sounds pretty loud IMO... Hope some better tires make it better.
Lovin the BRZ
Why BRZ over the GR86? Looking to buy one of these, for daily drive.
Availability. The BRZ was what I was able to purchase first, I also appreciate the softer ride, but like the GR86 interior better.
@@TheTopher i have read reviews saying what you mentioned about tuning, like the gr86 accelerates slightly better with slightly better torque response, but the brz softer ride has me split in half haha. Thanks for the videos.
